Meet Fun-Wave, My Rescued Feeder-Goldfish!
The inexpensive "feeder" goldfish can make the liveliest pets.
This pic just looks a lot like my goldfish. Maybe I will be successful snapping goldfish photos myself soon.
Comet goldfish from the pet-store's giant tank of "feeder goldfish" that cost as little as 25 cents are my favorite goldfish. To find my pet, I watched until I spotted a bright, effortlessly yet vigorously swimming, small, not quite medium-sized fish and waited for assistance.
"There...See? I want that one!"
Feeder fish can be heartier, having grown stronger from dealing with stressful overcrowded, "bulk" pet store conditions -- but sometimes not.
I have been cheered by some great Comet feeder-goldfish over the years. Fun-Wave has lived with me and the Tortoise Cat several years, so far.
When I was a teenager I chose to raise tropical fish while my younger sister kept goldfish. She would lose the fancier fan-tails more often than the simple Comets. Overall, I had far more troubles with the tropicals than she did with her goldfish.
After a couple of years of dong my best, I sold my tropical fish collection to an enthusiast and switched to a giant bowl and one goldfish.

Give the goldfish plenty of water with lots of surface area for aeration and room to grow. Tanks with filters and aerators are better than bowls. Some goldfish care experts recommend providing several gallons for each goldfish! But, some of my single feeder-goldfish have lived for years in a giant bowl of cool water with a fountain and green plants.

Remember...
Goldfish POOP lots, so avoid the temptation to overfeed! I change part of the water every other day or so, using as much as I need to water houseplants. Bi-weekly, I siphon excess refuse from the bottom. Otherwise, I let beneficial bacteria recycle waste.

Tips I Received or Learned the Hard Way
For Keeping Goldfish Happy & Heathy
A canned pea now and then prevents, or cures, swim-bladder congestion, the dreaded condition that causes goldfish to swim upside-down and eventually exhaust themselves trying to swim on an even keel.
Watch for patches of fungus disease and add medicine to the water before it's too late. (If you keep more than one fish, isolate fungus-infected fish for treatment.)
Condition tap water to neutralize or remove toxic chemicals.
Stabilize pH by adding some hardness with crushed oyster shell; above 7.4 is best, but avoiding extremes or drastic shifts is more important.
Provide both light, for fish to see their food and play, and darkness, for rest and hiding out.

Another Tip...
Add only smooth tank decorations, because feeder-goldfish like Comets swim fast and might cut, bruise or stab themselves on jagged rocks or shells.

- My brother gave me a 29 gal aquarium, and as soon as I get it clean and set up I was considering getting a "feeder" goldfish to put in there. I have "feeder" rats as pets, it would go with my "Please don't feed my pet to your pet" theme.

- Lovely lens. I always buy 'feeder fish' for our pond - they grow up beautifully and do very well until a visiting egret mistakes the pond for a sushi bar - after which I visit the pet store for more 'feeder fish'.
