Recyclable Baby Bottles

Made from Polypropylene

Going green is the now available in recyclable baby bottles made from polypropylene. I am familiar with polypropylene as a suture material used in surgery. If it's safe for that, it has to be safe for baby!

What Is Polypropylene?

Polypropylene moleculePolypropylene is a polymer used in a wide variety of products. Thermal underwear, carpet, stationery, plastic parts and containers, laboratory equipment, and even medical applications are just a few of the uses of this rugged polymer. It is normally tough and flexible and has good resistance to fatigue. Because of the resistance to fatigue, most plastic hinges are made from it, like the hinged lid of a Tic-Tacs box.

Because polypropylene can withstand high temperatures, it is used in a variety of medical or laboratory applications as well as for food containers. The food containers do not melt in a microwave or a dishwasher. Rubbermaid and Sterilite commonly use polypropylene for their containers. It can also be made into bottles to contain liquid or powdered products.

I know polypropylene best as a surgical suture used for repairing hernias and blood vessels. It is a non-reactive product and is rarely rejected by the human body. I would have to say I have used it weekly in my nursing career.

Plastic Contaminants

Make Sure Your Plastic Containers Are Free of These!

BPA moleculeThe convenience of plastic has made us somewhat complacent in watching what plastic products are made of. When it comes to plastics that hold our foods, there are three chemicals you need to watch. You need to make sure your plastic items are free of BPA, PVC, and pthalates.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an organic compound used to make plastics and epoxy resins. Concerns about its use have been reported since the 1930s. In 2010 Canada became the first country to declare BPA as a toxic substance. The use of BPA in baby bottles is banned in the European Union and Canada. BPA is used to make a variety of products including water bottles, sports equipment, medical and dental devices, dental fillings, eyeglass lenses, CDs and DVDs. Epoxy resins containing BPA are used to line cans containing almost all foods and beverages.

BPA can mimic the body's hormones and may lead to negative health effects. It has its most daunting effect during early development. In 2009 the Endocrine Society released a statement expressing concern over current human exposure to BPA. A 2008 review concluded that obesity may be increased as a function of BPA exposure.

PVC is the third most widely produced plastic. It is widely used in construction because it is cheap, durable, and easy to assemble. PVC has replaced copper and stainless steel for most plumbing uses. It therefore carries our drinking water.

PVC is made more flexible and softer by adding plasticizers such as phthalates. This makes it possible to be used in a plethora of products. Inflatable structures, flooring, hoses, tubing, and electrical cable insulation are just a few examples.

Many vinyl products contain additional chemical to change their chemical consistency. Some of these additives can leach out of the products. The plasticizers used to make PVC flexible have been of particular concern. Soft PVC toys have been made for babies for years. There are concerns that these particular additives leach out of the toys and into the babies' mouths when chewed. A primary plasticizer used in this application is DEHP. In the US most companies have voluntarily stopped manufacturing PVC toys with DEHP and started using DINP. Many studies of DINP have found risk "unlikely" for children and newborns.

DEHP has also been used in making vinyl intravenous solution bags. These bags were shown to leach. The US FDA suggests manufacturers eliminate the use of DEHP in devices that can result in high aggregate exposure, especially for neonates.

Making sure your plastic containers, especially the ones used to store foods, are free of these chemicals is important to your health. Be sure to read the labels and don't buy any products that use these hazardous toxins.

The Best Way To Feed Your Baby

Breast feeding vs bottle feeding has been a debate for years. What do you have to say about it?

Is Breast Feeding Better Than Bottle Feeding?

Loading

Yes! Absolutely!

sheilamarie says:

Yes, better and simpler. But what is most important is the love and tenderness you communicate to the baby while feeding.

grandmamarilyn says:

I think it is even though I couldn't breastfeed my children

tiff0315 says:

I have never tried bottle feeding, so I'm biased. But I feel that breast feeding has a lot more benefits!

jmsp206 says:

Breast feeding is best ofcourse but the bottle is always needed.

DecoratingforEvents says:

I agree with Aysha -- a combination worked best for me!

aishu19 says:

I do think breast feeding is better fo physical and emotional benefits. But that doesnt mean bottle feeding is bad..In fact, I would say doing both is indeed the best.

No, the baby gets just as much nutrition from formula!

Make Your Own Baby Food

It's Easy!

Making your own baby food can really save you money. Those little jars of food are expensive and full of preservatives. As you add foods to your baby's diet, why not give them fresh foods. Now, baby's sensitive digestive system can't handle some parts of fresh fruits and vegetables, like the skins. Food mills will separate the skins and seeds from the nutritious pulp so you can feed your baby without worry. Cook, steam, and puree all in one appliance. How much easier could it get?
