Running away when he sees the medicine bottles

My son was sick when I decided to create a lens on how to feed medicine to a toddler. I have big problems trying to make a 2 year old take his medicine. When he saw those horrible bottles of medicine, he started crying and hiding from me. He will scream when I caught hold of him. While I tried to think of ways to feed him his medicine without putting out a fight, my son learned how to spit out his medicine.

It was very very frustrating to see my son rejecting his medicine and his cough, fever and running nose refuse to go away. I know that he has to take his medicine in order to get well, but a 2 year old will not understand this.

This is what I have done

I have tried all the medicine that I need to feed and categories them into 3 types, sweet with no medicine taste, sweet with a bit of medicine taste and medicine taste only (yuck).

Medicine that are sweet are easier to feed. I just have to mix them into any fruit juice, my son will take it. I have to be careful with the one with a bit of medicine taste. I will have to find something drinkable that has a strong taste to cover the medicine taste. I found Vitagen or Yakult works. I can even add in 3 type of medicine from these 2 categories and my son will drink without fuss.

The last type of medicine that taste just like horrible medicine are tricky. I have tried adding a small portion to Vitagen and my son rejected it completely. What I finally do to make him drink is to pin him down with a big towel (when I have got no help) and use a syringe.

More Ideas on How to Make Your Toddler Take His/Her Medicine

These are some of the ways you can try to make your toddler take his/her medicine. Some methods work for others, some do not. When we are at our wits end, we will try everything.
  1. Force feeding. Get someone to carry, hold on or pin your toddler down and you use the syringe, push it at the side of the mouth.
  2. Mix the medicine with a interesting fruit juice that your toddler have not try before.
  3. Serve the medicine with fruit juice in a interesting mug, cup, bottle that your toddler has not seen before.
  4. Add the medicine with jam on bread.
  5. Use a new interesting straw for the drugged fruit juice.
  6. Mix the medicine into fermented milk or yogurt.
  7. Mix the medicine into cocoa beverage. If your toddler still do not want to drink, try mixing more coco powder into the drink. It works for me.

Let your doctor know in advance what you are going to do

so that your doctor know what is the best medicine he will give

Let your doctor know in advance that you are going to drug your toddler beverage if it work for you. Your doctor may prescribe medicines that will not react if you put them into their drinks. My doctor gave me medicine that require me to feed my toddler twice a day instead of three time a day. Sometime, he will prescribe medicine that require you to add a few drop into your baby drink.

Your kid is just like mine! She learned so fast how to refuse the medicine. I have tried all methods like what you suggested on this page and cocoa drink just saved us from fighting.
