Why music?

Hi. My name's Johnny. I guess you could call me a die-hard music addict, because I spend every minute I'm awake listening to music. I just can't help it. Don't get me wrong, I don't listen to just any tunes that are available, but I take my MP3 everywhere I go.

And if there's a party tonight, you can bet that I'm digging through my collection looking for material for a fresh CD, which will probably be lost the same evening. I can't remember how many CDs I have burned in my whole life, and do I have 'em by my side? Not likely. Anyway, hard to imagine what would I without my MP3s. Now I'm not encouraging downloading free music, but hey, every true fan of any artist will eventually end up owning an original recording.

So anyway, back to my music flavors. As you can probably see from my lenses, I'm heavily into classic rock, 80s rock, rock n'roll, heavier rock sometimes - basically anything connected with the word rock. Except maybe weak indie and pop "rock" that's been thrown around these days everywhere. You could also say that I don't pass up on the opportunity to listen to some good hip hop or electronic music. I think my all time favorite artist list could look something like this:

Springsteen 2008

the Artist List

  • Bob Dylan (Like A Rolling Stone, Mr Tambourine Man, Stuck Inside The Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again, Positively 4th Street)
  • Bruce Springsteen (Thunder Road, The Rising, Hungry Heart, The River, Born To Run)
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd (Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Saturday Night Special)
  • Elvis (Follow That Dream, Suspicious Minds, Milk Cow Blues)
  • Chuck Berry (Maybellene, Route 66, You Never Can Tell)
  • Bon Jovi (You Give Love A Bad Name, These Days, Living On A Prayer, Who Says You Can't Go Home)
  • Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers (American Girl, Learning To Fly, Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That, Into The Great Wide Open)
  • Dean Martin (Gentle On My Mind). Well, OK, I don't listen to his songs that much, I just adore the "Dean Martin Show".
  • Kris Kristofferson (Silver-Tongued Devil, For The Good Times, Help Me Make It Through The Night)
  • Johnny Cash (Home Of The Blues, Cocaine Blues, San Quentin, Custer)
  • Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill Theme, You're Not Here, Waiting For You, Ordinary Vanity)
  • Boston (More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind)
  • Nine Inch Nails (Zero-Sum, The Warning, A Warm Place, Starf-ckers Inc.)
  • Rolling Stones (Rip This Joint, Miss You, Rocks Off, Gimme Shelter, Let It Loose, Shine A Light)
  • The Doors (The End, Break On Through, Light My Fire)
  • Roy Orbison (California Blue, You Got It, I Drove All Night, She's A Mystery To Me)
  • Dire Straits (Walk Of Life, Brothers In Arms, Money For Nothing, Tunnel Of Love, Twisting By The Pool, Telegraph Road, Your Latest Trick, Wild West End)
  • Black Crowes (Could I've Been So Blind, Twice As Hard)
  • Billy Idol (Speed, Eyes Without A Face, Cradle Of Love, Dancing With Myself)
  • Ghostface Killah (Wu-Banga 101, Apollo Kids, Shakey Dog, Kilo, Blue Armor)
  • The Field (A Paw In My Face, Everday, The Deal)
  • Clipse (Momma I'm Sorry, Wamp Wamp, Hello New World, Keys Open Doors, Chinese New Year, Nightmares, Pu--y Remix)
  • Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch (Black Rain, Evolution, Dreamers Of The Dream)
  • Fela Kuti (Roforofo Fight, Water Get No Enemy, Coffin For Head Of State)
  • Eagles (Desperado, Take It Easy, Already Gone, Doolin-Dalton/Desperado Reprise)
  • Neil Young (Round And Round, Cowgirl In The Sand)
  • Billy Joel (Vienna, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Piano Man, She's Always A Woman)

Why music? (continued)

Well, hot-diggidy damn, that's a pretty big list for start, innit? That's more or less all the artists I could remember now. I'm sure you can identify your favorites among these nonetheless, especially if you, just like I, share the feeling that today's music

ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock n'roll

I'm not saying that everything these days is total trash, but damn, I bet your usual playlist ain't oversaturated by no fall out boys, kelly clarcksons, beyonces and stuff like that. Sure there might be great artists and groups that do their own thing regardless of the fact whether the radio plays them or not, but I'll sit down and listen to Like A Rolling Stone any day of the week!

Music does wonders for your soul. You may be sick, broken-hearted, out of touch with reality, having the worst day in your life, whatever - the music is your only savior. 'Cause real music ain't just music - it's pure magic working on you, on your heart, on your soul. Tracks like Springsteen's Thunder Road, for example, is God in motion, nothing more, nothing less. Some ignorant sonouvabitch could probably break it down to just lyrics, piano and guitar parts, but I seriously doubt that somebody could be as blind (deaf) as to go that far.

Anyway, the magic of the music is exactly the reason why I put all these lens together. I can hear it, I can feel it, and I can appreciate it. Now I want you all to experience the same.

Hungry Heart

A classic track from the Boss.

"Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack
I went out for a ride and never went back"

Hmmmm... Sounds like fun!

The Facts:

  • This was Springsteen's first top 10 hit.
  • When Springsteen met Joey Ramone in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Ramone asked Bruce to write a song for his band, The Ramones. Springsteen wrote "Hungry Heart" that night but decided to keep it on the advice of his producer and manager, Jon Landau.
  • This was used in the Tom Cruise movie Risky Business. It was the first time a Springsteen song was used in a film.
  • In the 1981 Rolling Stone reader's poll, this was voted best single. Springsteen also won for Best Artist, Album, and Male Singer.
  • Bruce has the audience sing the first verse and chorus when he performs this live.
  • Shortly before he was murdered in New York City, John Lennon praised Springsteen and this song in particular.

The Byrds

Mr. Tambourine Man

Probably the rarest version. This one's at the Roy Orbison Tribute back in, err, '88 or '89. The ONLY time The Byrds teamed up with Dylan to perform this awesome song.

The Facts:

  • Bob Dylan wrote this, and the song was originally released on his fifth album Bringing It All Back Home on March 22, 1965. It is the only song Dylan ever wrote that went to #1.
  • The Byrds' version is based on Bob Dylan's demo of the song. They took some lyrics out and added a 12-string guitar lead.
  • This was the Byrds' first single.
  • This song changed the face of Rock music. It launched the Byrds, convinced Dylan to "go electric;" and started the folk-rock movement.
  • This was the first of many Bob Dylan songs recorded by the Byrds. Others include: You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, The Times They Are a-Changin', It's All Over Now Baby Blue and Chimes of Freedom.
  • This was the first influential Folk-Rock song. All of the characteristics of that genre are present, including chorus harmonies, a rock rhythm section and lots of thought-provoking lyrics.
  • This was discussed in the 1995 movie, Dangerous Minds. In the movie, they talked about the underlying drug references this song might entail... Example: "Mr. Tambourine Man" = Drug Dealer; "Play a song for me" = give me a joint. The basis for this theory was that music was heavily censored at that time, so musicians would share their feelings about drugs and unallowed subject material through coded songs.

Walk Of Life

Live at Mandela's birthday tribute in Webley Arena in '88. What can I say - once-in-a-lifetime performance, once-in-a-lifetime event. You should also check out the video of the studio recording. It's funny as hell!

The Facts:

  • Mark Knopfler wrote this song to celebrate the street buskers of London, hence the references to "Be-Bop-A-Lula" and "What'd I Say," two standards that might be part of a singer's repertoire in the mid-'80s.
  • The song wasn't going to be on the album at all, but producer Neil Dorfsman was out-voted by the band and than the track got on the album. The song is one of the most up-lifting tracks Mark Knopfler had ever written. Knopfler later changed the lyrics sometimes one later concerts such as the Mandela gig in '87 where Clapton is in the band as a stand in.
  • "Walk of Life" was the song played during the Space Shuttle Discovery crew wake-up call on STS-114 Flight Day 7.

Shelter Me

One of the examples that the music made in the '90s doesn't necessarily SUCK.

"Everybody needs a little place they can hide
Somewhere to call their own, don't let nobody inside"

Oh so true.

The Facts:

  • This song is about how everyone has their own vices, no matter how small they are; and that people shouldn't look down on others just because their vices are different.

Pressure Drop

One of the most recognizable reggae tunes in the world. It can't get any feel better than this - heck, this might even cheer up a funeral procession. Keep this handy if you're prone to having a bad day everyday, because after a week, you'll be a changed person. No stress, Jah bless!

The Facts:

  • Pressure Drop introduced many Americans to reggae music when it was released in 1970.
  • This song appears on the soundtrack of The Harder They Come. The movie is about the adventures of a reggae musician trying to get his songs played on the radio and the hardships associated with the music industry. He apparently ends up selling marijuana and killing a policeman. The movie is in English, but very hard to understand due to the heavy Jamaican accents the actors use.

What Would Brian Boitano Do

Now this is funny as hell! And you'll find yourself singing along with C, K and S in a matter of moments. Thank God for "South Park".

The Facts:

  • Wanna know what Boitano thinks of this song?

Considering South Park's reputation for off-color humor, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist says: "I was worried when I first heard about it, but the song is flattering, not insulting."

In fact, Brian, 43, now sells What Would Brian Boitano Do? T-shirts to raise funds for his inner-city youth ice skating program.
