Peggie Shealy was one of the dearest friends I ever had. In my young adult years, she was my therapist during a terrible bout with depression, and what a brilliant, caring therapist she was!
Time passed quickly. Suddenly I was in my fifties and she had long since retired to the mountains of South Carolina. One day she called me. "I want to write my story and I want you to type it." Of course, I said yes! And over the months ahead, Feeling Safe was born.
In Feeling Safe, Miss Peggie tells the story of her life and lessons she has learned. Her story is fascinating; her lessons unforgettable! As you read her book, you will laugh, you will weep, you will learn, and you will enjoy this delightful lady -- who was way ahead of the women's movement in the USA!.

I don't know who was the proudest when the book appeared on Amazon -- me or PLS! But it was indeed a happy, happy day!
Dr. Shealy used her computer to play solitare. Only. She wrote her book on paper or dictated it to me via transcription tapes. You cannot imagine the number of packages that flew back and forth in the mail -- or the hours and hours we spent on the telephone! My friend, Susan Killingsworth, helped with the final typing and editing. Another friend, Susan Whisonant, read, edited and even went with up to Salem, SC, to visit with PLS and work on the book one weekend. Other friends read, edited and helped us get the book ready for publication. Thank you all!
Peggie L. Shealy, Ph. D.
At her funeral, Miss Peggie's pastor began the eulogy saying "Peggie Shealy was one of the most difficult women I have ever met -- and the most Godly."
The congregation laughed with love and remembering. We also knew her well and loved her dearly. She was brilliant, delightful, supportive, directive, and multi-talented. I am thankful to have known and loved her in my lifetime.

One reason being a parent is so difficult is that you think you are going to get a being that replicates you and therefore you will understand it. Wrong. You don't.

Peace between us;
Peace inside.
Throughout the world,
May peace abide.

More Wisdom from Dr. Shealy
from Feeling Safe
If the world gets too much, go to the beach and look at the ocean. Any time of year will do. She is powerful. She puts you in your place and that's not bad. You are a little mammal on a little planet in a little galaxy in an enormous universe that all makes God's own kind of sense. Your problems are nearly the same dimension as that of your dog when it gets a flea or the goldfinches when the birdfeeder runs out of sunflower seeds. I happen to think God cares about all of these. We just happened to be creatures that can contemplate all of this. That's enough! Be thankful you can think!
Look for the challenges in life. When you see a path to do great things and the path is clear somehow for a moment, go for it.
You only become whole when you let others know your weaknesses and become vulnerable. Then they accept you.
Peggie L. Shealy, Ph.D.
Dr. Shealy's poem about her son
Momie's Orchid

The most beautiful flower I ever received
Was really an iris without the stem,
From a four-year-old who truly believed
The delicate bloom was one of "them."
My mud-streaked cherub thought he'd found
"The one you wear all upside downed!"
Peggie L. Shealy, Ph.D.
Feeling Safe
Life can get empty and then fill up again. Mostly you have to fill it back up yourself.
My own thoughts about this lens
I have tried to introduce you to Peggie Shealy. It simply cannot be done. The little snippets from Feeling Safe simply provide a peek at this lady's wisdom. I am thankful that she was part of my life for such a long time. I learned so much from her. I hope that some of these little notes will help you or inspire you.
And yes, do write your story. Dr. Shealy would insist that you do. It is so important to do that. Her book has comforted me many times and I am sure it will continue to do so. Leave your story in written form for your children and grandchildren. Let them continue to learn from you long after you are gone from this earth. Okay?

How to Write Your Personal History
-
A personal history is one of the nicest gifts we can leave our children and grandchildren. Telling your story allows your grandchildren and even your great-great-great grandchildren a glimpse into your life. Write your story! One of the items I trea...
Did you learn something from Dr. Shealy today? Did it help?
Who has touched your life?
This lens is dedicated with thanksgiving to Peggie L. Shealy, Ph.D.
Thank you, Miss Peggie!

- Joan thank you for reminding me about this lens. I wish everyone who publishes on Squidoo would understand that they are leaving something for posterity and take the opportunity to write their story - at least on some of their lenses.
I may just need a trip to the ocean......;)

- Wonderful tribute to one who obviously meant a lot to you. Must have been a lot of work, but a wonderful educational experience to draft her book for she sounds like an amazing character. "You only become whole when you let others know your weaknesses and become vulnerable. Then they accept you." Peggie L. Shealy, Ph.D. Ain't it so! Will never forget my grandfather, a College President at the time, sharing with me of some of his undergraduate, sophomoric escapades... after it became evident that I was trying to make a wild University Fraternity life out of my soph year at The Citadel. Prior to that I never knew he was anything but perfect, but he formed a great bond with me that day by getting on my level and sharing his vulnerability. I was always appreciative and being a relatively new grandfather, I know it must have been gratifying for him to share that bonding knowledge with me and know that I still thought of him as one of the greatest men I've ever known.

- Quite a nice tribute to a remarkable woman -- you know being near water has always helped me. My most relaxing vacations were in the Florida Keys with mom and my stepfather -- my stepfather and I would go out each day on his 18 ft. aluminum boat and fish for up to 8 hours. Mom would pack a lunch for us. I miss these quieting times! My stepfather has passed on; things have changed.
