Feline Heartworm

Feline heartworm has often been misdiagnosed.  Heartworm symptoms in cats are vague and until recently not much research had been done.  However, it is now believed that cats are as prone to heartworm disease as dogs are, even though the disease manifests a little differently.

Heartworm disease is contracted by a mosquito which has bitten another animal with the heartworm larvae.  When they bite another host they inject this larvae into the bloodstream of the animal.  This larvae then travels to the heart of the animal and matures there.   The worms seem to reproduce less in the cat than in the dog, so they have less worms, but the damage to cats can still be deadly, even with fewer amount of worm reproduction.

Also, these parasites can live in the dog much longer than in a cat.  They can live from 5 - 7 years in a dog, but only about 1 - 2 years in a cat.

Signs of Feline Heartworm Can Be Vague

Until recently feline heartworm was not really recognized, because of the vagueness of the symptoms. It is very difficult to recognize feline heartworm. It often manifests as respiratory difficulties. Other signs of feline heartworm are coughing, vomiting, anorexia and lethargy. Many times it is not diagnosed, and the cat suddenly dies.

Treatment for feline heartworm is very dangerous. It is estimated that 50 percent of cats die during treatment for heartworm. This is mainly because they are treated with poison which kills them even before the heartworm. The medication which is usually used contains arsenic, which will produce many harmful side effects, sometimes leading to death of the cat.

Some cats survive without treatment, but others do not.

Treatment for Feline Heartworm

Conventional health care treatment for feline heartworm is usually a pill which is given to the animal. While this medication is effective in killing any heartworm larvae in the animal, it has been recognized to have serious side effects which are very dangerous to the health of your cat. These drugs contain pesticides which affect your cat's liver and kidneys, and the effect is cumulative. So, while treating the cat for heartworm prevention, you may actually be causing even greater damage to your cat.

Conventional heartworm treatment will weaken your animal's immune system over time. This will make them more prone to contract a host of other diseases and infections. It is believed that this medication is responsible for many severe diseases in animals such as allergies, arthritis, liver and kidney diseases and even some forms of cancer.
