Felt Style: 35 Fashionable Accessories To Create And Wear

My Review

Felting (or fulling) is the process of taking 100% wool fibers and turning them into a matted "felt" like material. (Think about what happens when you put that wool sweater into the wash!) This book will take you through many different felting techniques, and not all of them require a knit item. These are some of the best felting instructions I've ever read... and seen, as the photos used to illustrate the steps are amazing.

I have only ever felted with knit items, and this technique is only a fraction of this book. Some is felting with unspun fibers directly. Other projects involve felting into different fabrics. (I am not sure how I feel about this one. I think this one is more like painting, either it looks great or it doesn't.) Certainly this book has opened my eyes to a greater realm of fiber crafts.

The patterns in this book are so-so. One bag with fiber felted into fabric was cute, but the projects are lacking a sophistication that I prefer in knit bags. There is more of a homemade vibe, and I am not talking about this in the good way. The most impressive patterns are the ones felted from unspun fibers. I am not interested in learning how to do this at the moment (learning to crochet is higher on my list) but I would come back to this book if I ever wanted to learn.

Final verdict: greatest value in this book are in the instructions. For that alone it is worth owning... just don't count on loving what you can make from it.
