The Fender Telecaster Guitar

The amzing Fender Telecaster guitar has been with us now since 1949. The first dual-pickup commerically successful Telecaster was known as the Broadcaster, however, due to possible copyright problems, the name was changed. The Fender Telecaster guitar has been in continuous production, in one form or another, since early 1949, and was the first of it's kind to reach such broad success. The Telecaster guitar, commonly known as the (Tele), is the oldest solid-body electric guitar to have been successfully commercially produced. Some of the first models to be sold, the single pickup models, were dubbed the Esquire, and there were only about fifty produced. Unfortunately, most had to be replaced under warranty due to bent/warped necks, as these models had no "truss" rod in the neck.

The Fender Telecaster, after being developed by Leo Fender in Fullerton, California in 1949, has seen many different incarnations. There have also been many attempts to copy this incredible instrument, but the Fender name on the headstock carries much weight among guiatrists the world over.

The early model Fender Telecaster guitars bring an amazing price, as collectors put a very high value on these quality musical instruments.

Some Famous Fender Telecaster Guitar Pickers

...from twang to head-bang

Throughout the decades, most of the big names in music have at least played the Fender some, but others were known for their love of the Fender Telecaster. Some of these notable players, were Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, James Burton which was (and is) very creative on the instrument. James was known as Elvis Presley's lead guitarist for many years, but he also played with Ricky Nelson and Merle Haggard. His accomplishments as a guitarist were evident in Fender's decision to release a James Burton signature model Fender Telecaster guitar.

Another player that wasn't famous for his Telecaster playing, but nonetheless enjoyed the instrument, even having a custom Telecaster being made for himself, was George Harrison of the Beatles. Harrison used this custom-built Telecaster during the Beatles' Let It Be recording sessions, and also for the legendary rooftop concert on top of the Beatles' Apple.

No (even partial) list of Fender Telecaster players would be complete without mentioning the legendary Eric Clapton. Clapton used a Fender Telecaster during his years with the Yardbirds. He's also usually always been close to a Telecaster throughout his amazing career.

One of the most famous guitar solos in the history of the instrument was also performed on a Fender Telecaster. Although Jimmy Page, of Led Zeppelin fame, was often associated for his love of the Gibson Les Paul, the amazing lead from Stairway to Heaven was performed on his Fender Telecaster guitar, and was even said to be done in a single take!! The 1958 Fender Telecaster, that was given to Page by friend, and also incredible guitarist Jeff Beck, was said to have been painted by Page, in a psychedelic scheme, and dubbed the Dragon Telecaster.

The list of notable Fender Telecaster players would go on and on, but we should at least mention, the following Tele pickers. Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Steve Cropper, the amazing Jeff Beck, the late-great Danny Gatton, and cutting the list too short, "Mr. Telecaster" himself, the fabulous Albert Lee.
