Feng Shui GUA Number & Symbol Placement
If you are new to Feng Shui or you are not sure how to work out your Gua Number then here is a simplified guide. In Feng Shui we all have four auspicious and four inauspicious directions which are based on your Gua number. Your Gua Number is calculated from your date of birth.
WHAT IS A GUA/KUA NUMBER & HOW TO FIND YOUR KUA NUMBER (PERSONAL ELEMENT): Your Gua/Kua Number is derived from the year of your birth - dependent on being either male or female. From it you can ascertain your best directions for sleeping, working and for anywhere else that you may spend a significant amount of time. A complete Feng Shui analysis will use the Gua/Kua numbers of all occupants. The Gua/Kua Number of your home can be determined by the direction that it faces (which is not necessarily the same direction as your front door - especially if your home is in an apartment!) Using the Gua/Kua Number of your home and your personal Kua Number (& that of your partner, if applicable) it is possible to determine the best placement of your bed, your desk, your favorite chair, etc.. With the addition of a geopathic stress analysis of your home - The Geomancer can optimize the chi' that surrounds you - creating a positive environment created just for you!
CALCULATE YOUR GUA/KUA NUMBER To calculate your Gua/Kua number use this simple formula. Take the last two numbers of the year you were born and add them together. Reduce them down to a single digit. For example if you were born in 1958 then you take the 58; 5 8=13; 1 3=4.
MALE - take the single digit and subtract it from 10. Example: 1958 single number of 4; 10-4=6. The Kua number is 6.
FEMALE - take the single digit and add 5. Using the 1958 single number of 4; 4 5=9. The Kua number is 9.
Your Kua will help to determine your type of energy and tell you the directions which are favorable to you. There are two groups of people: those from the East Houses and those from the West Houses. People from the same group are more compatible. It's easier for them to choose a home or the position of their bed, because they have the same good or bad directions.
If your Kua number is 1,3,4 or 9 you belong to the East Houses. If your Kua number is 2,6,7 or 8 you belong to the West Houses.
Lo Pan - Chinese Feng Shui Compass
Lo Pan - Every environment has special points at which Chi' (the life force) gathers. This can be pictured as a rimmed bowl which is filled with energy from different directions. A Lo Pan reading begins at these points and provides information about the quality of Chi' which collects in the bowl and is then transferred to other areas. Every energy collection point influences near, and quite often, distant surroundings, for example the Ley lines. The Lo Pan reaches the small Chi' containers step by step, starting at the main ones. By understanding and using the Lo Pan, you can successfully diagnose and help fix problems however for those just starting out, these are also excellent for finding each direction in your home and beginning on the path to understanding the flow of chi' through your home.Feng Shui is the 5,000 year old Chinese study of managing one's luck and good fortune. Feng Shui has been steadily growing in status and popularity in the West. Feng Shui involves capturing the beneficial CHI' (or Qi), which flows through the earth's meridians, while at the same time deflecting the malevolent SHA, which brings adversity and misfortune. Many Chinese consider a Feng Shui survey of their prospective home just as important if not more so than a building survey.
True Feng Shui always requires a compass. Without a compass, one is only practicing interior design and personal preference. A Feng Shui analysis is very specific: There are eight directions, North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, and Southwest. On a Lo Pan, these directions are divided into three different sections. There are 24 divisions on a Lo Pan of 15 degrees each. Each division's orientation can result in a different house in terms of its prosperity. A few degrees one way or another is a completely different house type.
There are many different levels of Chinese Feng Shui. The commonly used teachings include:
Form - The Form method only addresses the external or internal environments.
Eight House - (Known as the East/West teachings) This method addresses the basic orientations and how best to align one's self to the favorable directions.
Xuan Kong - (Also known as Flying Star Method) This is a time specific Feng Shui which looks at orientations and time factors.
One of the first things newcomers will notice is that the arrow or red mark on the compass needle points South, not North, which is correct for Chinese Feng Shui Compasses.
