Introduction To Ferret Housing

For many years, the number of pets one would keep in the home was finite. That is, we were commonly stuck with the traditional domestic pets such as dogs, cats, hamsters, fish and birds. Then, all of that changed when it was discovered that the (generally) feral animal the ferret could be domesticated for the home. But, unlike dogs and cats the ferret required a little extra attention and certain complexities of housing a ferret must be taken into consideration.

First and foremost, you simply can't let a ferret run wild unattended throughout your home. This simply will not do for a number of reasons and not the least of which being that ferrets have claws. Yes, these claws can do quite a bit of damage to the furniture in a person's home. Now, this is not stated so as to dissuade people from purchasing a ferret. On the contrary ferrets make wonderful pets as their rambunctious nature is a unique alternative to what we traditionally expect from a house pet. But, if you wish to keep a ferret in your home you will also need to house it in a cage or else it your union with the ferret will prove to be decidedly less than harmonious.

This does not mean that you never let the ferret out of the cage. Rather, it means that you need to keep the ferret in a cage when it is not being supervised. Examples of this include when you are asleep or away from home. An unsupervised ferret may get a little overanxious and this could lead to the animal causing damage to the home. Of course, this can be easily avoided if the animal is properly housed in a cage.

Now, this does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that you can put a ferret in any old cage. No, this would be rather unsafe and cruel to the poor ferret. Remember, you want the ferret to be comfortable in its cage as opposed to being in "maximum lockdown conditions". As such, there are a few simple steps you need to follow to make sure your ferret is properly housed for its own safety and well being.

The cage itself should always be a large one that provides the ferret with as much space and comfort as possible. Of course, it is always best to stick with cages that have been specifically designed for ferrets since these cages take the needs of the animal into consideration when they are designed. When you attempt to house a ferret in a cage that was not truly designed for the lack of space could prove detrimental to the pet. If you can not find a cage that was specifically designed for a ferret then it is best to purchase the largest cage you can find. Well, within reason%u2026you do not need to purchase a cage designed to house a St. Bernard dog!

It should also go without saying that it is important to keep the cage as clean as possible. If the ferret is left in a dirty or unsanitary cage there is the chance that the poor creature may become ill. So, it would be best to avoid such an unfortunate occurrence by keeping the cage as clean as possible. Also, putting some water and a little bit of food in the cage wouldn't hurt either and the ferret will appreciate the gesture!

Owning a ferret can bring a great deal of joy to one's life but the secret to this joy is keeping the ferret safe and happy. Purchasing a reliable ferret cage will definitely help in this regard.

We've been through about 4 different set-ups with our ferret and the best so far has been just a "playpen" type one (with an open top) and waterproof liner on the bottom. It's very easy to keep clean and Snowie loves it (and can't escape)!
