Ferret Names: Good Names for Your Pet Ferret

Naming a pet ferret is like naming any other pet, the name has to fit your ferret's personality, or you'll end up using a nickname, a shortened version of the name, initials or even changing your ferret's name down the road.

Where to Find Good Ferret Names

Good ferret names can be found in baby name books, ferret care books, and even cat or dog name books. Names are not exclusive to one pet type or another, and human names are very popular with ferret owners.

How to Choose the Right Name for Your Pet Ferret

The first thing to do is to get to know your ferret a bit before you decide on a name. Besides the sex of your ferret, you should take into account your pet's personality (Flip, Cuddles), colour (Peaches, Raven, Blaze, Panda, Sandy, Silver), size (Bitsy, Peanut, Max), habits (good and bad!) (Nipper, Rascal, Poppy), ferret behaviours (Dancer, Kissy, Weaver, Dooky) and favourite object (Socks, Teddy), as well as how you feel about your pet (Pal, Baby).

Can Ferrets Recognize Their Names?

Ferrets are intelligent creatures. They can be taught tricks, can be litter trained and can be walked on a leash. And, yes, they will recognize their name if it is used consistently. Therefore, choosing a name you can easily say and call is important. You don't want to trip over your pet's name or fail to use it because it's too long or doesn't roll off the tongue easily. So my recommendation is a one- or two-syllable name, like Flip or Nipper, as opposed to a three-syllable name like Houdini which will end up reduced to Dini. In English we tend to use two-syllable names for pets as they are easier to call. Think of calling "Bud" and "Buddy." Which one feels best to you?

Anything longer than three syllables will definitely end up getting shortened, so why go there in the first place? If you do want to give your ferret a longer name, choose one with a built-in nickname. Maximillian=Max, Caroline=Carrie.

Other Ways of Finding Ferret Names

More Places to Find Good Pet Ferret Names

You can find interesting names from mythology, classical and popular literature, movies and television. Food and everyday items can get you thinking, too: Pepper, Brownie, Peanut, Donut, Treacle, Honey, Cooca, Penny, Tumbler, Steamer. Precious stones and metals are another source of names: Ruby, Diamond, Opal, Gold (Goldie), Silver, Copper. You might want to avoid ones like Emerald and Platinum that don't roll off the tongue quickly and easily, though.

Using Foreign Words and Names for Your Ferret

Foreign names and words for pets can make good ferret names, too, like Minou (popular cat name in France), Pitou (popular dog name in France), Kisa (Russian for "kitty"), Paka (Swahili for "cat"), etc. The Swahili word for ferret is "Kinyama kama cheche." This has several possible names built into it. I like CheChe (ChiChi).

Ferret Names to Avoid

You can borrow names from other pets or animals like horses and dogs, but be careful. One type of name you might want to avoid, given the mischievous and engaging nature of ferrets, is "pedigree" type names that you might find in the lines of blueblood horses, dogs and cats, like Mystery's Cousin or Point Well Taken. Race horses are often given "lucky" names like Go For The Gusto or Winner's Circle. These names, as well as pretentious or highbrow names don't really suit the cute and fun-loving ferret.

Cute Ferret Names

Cute Ferret Names

Cute names for ferrets are ones that use repeated syllables like Lulu, Tutu, BooBoo, Bobo, Toto, Coco, Mimi, Fifi, Kiki, Didi, Gigi, etc. These names are very easy to say and they're especially easy for your ferret to learn. They also mimic the quicksilver nature of ferrets as they pop in and out of their favourite hiding places.

Another type of name that is popular with ferret owners is the "endearment," especially ones used for little children like Poppet (popular in the UK), Punkin, Baby, Honey, Buddy, Dolly, Bunny, Lovey, Darling, Dearie, Sweetie, Precious, Princess, etc.

And don't forget people names like Susie, Jenny, Daisy, Penny, Bobby, Billy, Danny, etc. Serious names like Garth and Isolde just don't work well for ferrets! But Izzy works just fine, so do look at all kinds of names, even the serious ones, and see if you can find a variation that will work for your ferret.

Names for Pairs of Ferrets

If you have a pair of ferrets, it's cute to name them with names that match or complement each other, like Merry and Pippin, Starsky and Hutch, Bonnie and Clyde, Mac and Cheese, Sugar and Spice, etc. Make sure both names are easy to say and reflect your ferrets' personalities. Zeus and Aphrodite are popular names, but Aphrodite doesn't trip easily off the tongue and neither names take into account a ferret's temperament. However, Merry and Pippin are great names for ferrets! These are the two rascally young Hobbits in "Lord of the Rings." The names are easy to say and fit the typical ferret temperament perfectly!
