Protect Your Ferrets From the H1N1 Swine Flu

I am extremely concerned about the impact of the 2009 Swine Flu Outbreak on our domestic and black-footed ferret populations.

I am a ferret owner and a volunteer for a large ferret rescue organization in the Cleveland metropolitan area, so ferrets are a large part of my life.

Protect Your Ferrets From The Flu

  • Keep ferret bedding clean with frequent laundering.
  • Frequently clean and disinfect your ferret's cage and play areas with vinegar.
  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling ferrets!
  • Keep your ferrets away from people who show signs of illness.
  • If the ferret's primary caregiver becomes ill, arrange for alternate care from a veterinarian or other healthy person.
  • Quarantine sick ferrets from other ferrets in your home.
  • Call your veterinarian immediately if your ferret shows signs of respiratory illness.

Protect Against Swine Flu: First Aid Deluxe Germ Guard Personal Protection Pack
Sears has this handy protection pack that would be perfect to have on hand if you get sick and must care for your ferrets. There are so many times that one of us gets sick and it can be a few days before we know if we have a simple cold, or if we have the flu. Ferrets can't catch colds, but they can catch the flu from humans, so it's better to be safe than sorry, in my opinion.
