Ferruginous Owl

Ferruginous means resembling iron rust in color. There are ferruginous pygmy goats, so why not a ferrugious pygmy-owl? This seems to describe Glaudcidium brasilianum very well indeed! They are a brown owl, and are very small. Only 7 inches or less in length, you may miss them!

These tiny little owls are not that diverse, and are found in very small areas around Tucson, Arizona and the tip of Texas near Mexico. They must be the angels of the American Southwest!

A Small But Interesting Owl

Southwest Owl of America

Owl GraphicThe Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, previously called the Ferruginous Owl, is a sparrow sized owl, with only rust brown colored feathers. They have a small round head, and a long and very finely barred tail. They often like to place their tail at an angle, as it may balance them to swivel their heads around for best views. Some birders say since they are so small, and have a light weight, the momentum of their view must have evolved this long and skinny tail.

They like high up areas, and use their cross marked tail as a way of feeling the breeze. The crown of the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl is streaked with white feathers, and they have an underside of brown feathers. The have a nice black eye patch around their round face.

They have up to 4 eggs in a tree nest, and like to nest inside a hole in a tree if they can find it. A cactus will do just fine too.
