Festival of the Inner Light - December 21 through March 21

Ranked #11,629 in Holidays & Celebrations, #176,944 overall

The Festival of the Inner Light is a light-filled winter holiday season for those seeking enlightenment

The Festival of the Inner Light is a winter holiday celebrated with lights - lots of them! Light is the main thing needed for this enlightening winter holiday season. Too many of us are afflicted with seasonal affective disorder and don't get enough light. But light is what we need - inside and out.

The Festival of the Inner Light is a winter-long holiday of spiritual and creative growth.

The Festival of the Inner Light lasts from the first day of winter to the first day of spring - all winter long. During these days there are special events - a dinner to observe the Winter Solstice, and a picnic to observe the Spring Equinox.

This holiday is perfect for people who need an alternative way of celebrating during the winter season.

December 21 through March 21

...a three month festival!

The Festival of the Inner Light starts on the first day of winter, December 21, and lasts until the first day of spring, March 21.

This festival of light will bring illumination to us during the darkest months of the year.

How I'll Celebrate The Festival of the Inner Light

There are many ways to celebrate. When I decided to celebrate the Festival of the Inner Light, I asked myself, 'Will you send letters and cards to your family members?' 'Will you send gifts?' 'What will you do at home?' 'How will you decorate the house?' 'Will there be one special day with a dinner party?' 'What will you serve?' 'What special colors will you use?'

Here are some decisions I've made about how I'm going the celebrate the Festival of the Inner Light:

  • The house will be thoroughly cleaned before the Festival starts on December 21.

  • On December 21, the first day of the Festival, we will have a festive dinner. We will review the year and discuss our intentions. What worked? What didn't?

  • We will decorate the house with strings of light and angel figurines and ornaments, inside and out.

  • During the next three months we will write intentions on index cards. We will try for at least 100 intentions. We will be creative and write down things we'd like to do that we've never done yet.

  • We will make decorative boxes to put our cards into. The boxes should have two places to put the cards - one for unrealized intentions, and the other for things that were accomplished.

  • The three months of the Festival of the Inner Light should be used to redecorate the house, and for all matters of creative alchemy.

  • We will write new prayers and personal ceremonies to use this year. We will renew our approaches to spiritual life.

  • March 21, the last day of the Festival of the Inner Light, is the first day of Spring. We will plan to celebrate with a trip into nature, and a picnic!

Gift giving with meaning

Give light during the Festival of the Inner Light! What could be more appropriate than to give lamps, flashlights, and candles? Any light-giving object would symbolize the celebration of light.

Charity donations are good too... it is light-giving to give to those who need relief from the pains and distresses of this world.

The path of inner light is the path to our connection with all of humanity.

Why Not Christmas?

My family has celebrated Christmas since before I was born. Early on I was distressed by it because of gifting habits and stressful pressures. I remember as a child, holiday shopping with my sister. We were each given twenty dollars and told to buy things for everyone on our very long lists. I found that so stressful! There was no way to buy something decent for each person with only twenty dollars to spend. Every year since then the pressure to provide holiday gifts has been a thing that stressed me and kept me from being able to enjoy the Christmas holiday.

As an adult I joined a non-Christian religion, and it made me wonder why my parents celebrated Christmas since neither of them were religious in any way. I later dropped the non-Christian religion, but still didn't feel 100% right about celebrating that day. I've never been a Christian, so why celebrate Christmas? It is a national tradition which I don't feel part of. It is also hyped by media so that people will spend more than they can afford to be part of the big celebration.

There are things I love about Christmas. Who wouldn't love the lights, the decorations, the spirit of giving, and the joy? And throughout the years I've felt pressured by my children who saw these things and wanted to take part. I felt like I had to have a tree for them, buy lots of gifts, prepare the big dinner, and make sure my kids had everything they desired on that day.

Now the children are grown and I'm about to face my first Christmas without a child living in my house. Suddenly I realize I can declare my independence from a holiday that's never felt right for me. So this year I'm designing my own winter holiday: The Festival of the Inner Light.

This holiday will last from December 21 through March 21. That's the entire winter, plus the first day of Spring. Why? Because this has meaning for me. It says that even during the dark, stormy days of winter there's light within to see us through. That shining light is the source of inner wisdom.

Search Your heart - what means something to you?

I know we're all different and if we're thinking Christmas isn't for us, then what else is? I've made my decisions about the holiday I'll celebrate this winter. Now it is your turn. What would have real meaning for you?

What would you like to celebrate?
