Sonotrax Basic LCD Fetal Doppler Baby Heart Monitor w/ 3 MHZ Probe

The Sonotrax Basic LCD Fetal Doppler Baby Heart Monitor is my personal favorite for those times in-between OB visits where you just need to hear your babys heart. While most fetal heart monitors only allow you to hear the sound - the LCD display on the Sonotrax fetal doppler heart monitor also shows you your babys heart rate. The monitor has speakers as well as the ability to listen with headphones, and is battery operated for added convenience.

You can usually start to hear your babys heartrate around 12 weeks, but some women have been able to detect their baby's heartrate as early as during the 9th week with the Sonotrax Basic LCD FEtal Doller Heart Monitor. Make sure and take your monitor with you to your OB appointment so you will know what to listen for when using your monitor. Also, you will be able to check and see if your monitor is able to pick up the fetal heartbeat properly (just to be sure!)

Don't panic if you get your fetal heart monitor and you can't find the babys heartbeat. It may take some time for you to learn how to use it properly, although they tend to be easy to use, there is a method to accurately finding your baby's heartbeat. In addition, it's possible for a baby to "hide" from the monitor and so there may be times when you are unable to detect a heartbeat and yet your baby is perfectly safe.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, she would always turn a certain way as soon as they started to get a heartbeat, and it would "dissappear" - we only got an accurate heart rate twice during my entire pregnancy! I found with my other pregnancies (including my current one) I tend to have better luck getting a fetal heart rate at home when I'm relaxed and doing nothing, rather than at the OB visit - I guess my kids tend to hide when they are being poked at from the outside by strangers! Whether this is your first pregnancy, the last, or somewhere in between, the Sonotrax Basic LCD Fetal Doppler Baby Heart Monitor is certainly well worth the small investment.

Hi Bebe Heart Rate Monitor

Close second for those on a strict budget

Hi Bebe Heart Rate MonitorThe Hi Bebe Heart Rate Monitor/Fetal Monitor is another good fetal heart rate monitor. It too comes with an LCD screen, however, many users state that the LCD isn't exactly accurate as it seems to jump around too much. Like the Sonotrax, you can hear your baby's heart beat as early as 10 weeks, but 12 weeks seems to be the time when most users are able to get a definite heartrate. One other drawback is that at times the Hi Bebe Heart Rate Monitor seems to have a bit too much static.

Its especially important that you take your Hi Bebe Heart Rate Monitor with you to your OB as many first time users had a difficult time telling the difference between the mother's heart rate and the babys heart rate. You don't want to scare yourself into thinking that the baby's heart rate is too low, so make sure you have some professional guidance before you start to rely on it. The further along you are in your pregnancy, the easier it is to successfully locate the baby's heart beat!

Angelsounds Fetal Doppler

The Basic Model Fetal Doppler

Angelsounds Fetal DopplerAngelsounds Fetal Doppler is what I had for my first pregnancy. Although today's model is much better than the models from 10 years ago. A nice feature of the Angelsounds Fetal Doppler is that it has a second output plug - so you can hook it up to your stereo or even hook it up to your computer so you can record the sound! Since it's not hospital grade, it's best used later in pregnancy (after 16 weeks) although some have had luck earlier - especially those that are a bit on the slim side. If you're like me, and you didn't exactly have a model body before you became pregnant, you will likely have to wait until closer to 14-16 weeks to be able to hear clearly. And position has a lot to do with the success rate of catching your little one's heart rate on this doppler. It is also highly recommended that you go ahead and purchase the ultrasound gel for best results.
