FFAF: A Journey Through the Albums
Funeral for a Friend is a post-hardcore band from Bridgend, Wales. The band has been around since 2001 now and in that time has recorded a grand total of four studio albums. Before recording first album 'Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation' in 2003; the band had already previously released two successful EPs. In the early days a far more hardcore sound was put across by the band, a lot more screamo orientated and the music was far more ferocious in its approach. By the time of the first album the band's sound had now been toned down quite considerably - the fierce hardcore attacks of the two EPs were now being replaced with a much more mellow post-hardcore sound.'Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation' performed quite well commercially for the band, a couple of singles were released and the band's profile grew greater and more were introduced to the wonderful music of Funeral for a Friend. It would then be another two years before the world was blessed with a second FFAF album; that second album is 'Hours'.
'Hours' was released at a time when the band had not long before headlined the Give It A Name festival at the Alexandra Palace; the band was becoming more popular than ever and another album was just what the world wanted to see. It was going to be difficult to live up to the quality of the first album, the band tried its best however and once pulled through with a fine eleven track album of music.
In 2007 the heat was really on as the band prepared for the release of its third album 'Tales Don't Tell Themselves'; maintaining interest after three albums can sometimes be a very difficult task and FFAF here had to make sure that after this album they could continue to make music for the masses in the career that they all love so dearly; being in a band. This time the album is far more rock heavy, still has its elements of post-hardcore but most definitely provides more of a straight up rock sound than the band had ever before provided. The band had now progressed a long way from its early hardcore sound and its maturity as a unit was now entirely clear for all to see.
That now brings us up to date with where the band are at now; album number four, an album that will be unleashed upon the world on October 13th 2008. The album has been given the title of 'Memory and Humanity', and whilst the band originally only intended to record an EP; they actually found that they had far more material than this, and enough in fact to record their fourth studio album. In the UK the album is to see its release through Join Us Records, in America and Canada through Victory Records, and throughout the rest of the world it will be Roadrunner Records that the album is released through. Expect big things from album number four and most certainly prepare to be impressed.

Funeral for a Friend - Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation
(2003)
Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation
Amazon Price: $5.96 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
'Casually Dress & Deep in Conversation' was the band's debut album; the first of many and one which really set the standard for the rest to follow. It's an absolutely fantastic album and is I feel still the very best that the band has ever recorded. It was over six years ago that the album was released now; it's still very good though and is one that I have in fact been listening to for the whole six years that it has been out.
The album consists of twelve tracks, all of which are absolutely excellent. It's a great album to listen to; really uplifting of the spirits, and easing of the mind. The album relaxes you, excites you, and also makes you wish to get up and dance; it does lots of things all at once and always the listening experience is entirely enjoyable.
The music really moves you, there are a lot of terrific tracks present on this album and always the music has much to offer. Some of the tracks are of course better than others, they're all very good though and 'Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation' is most definitely an album that is well worth listening to.
Funeral for a Friend - Hours
(2005)
Hours
Amazon Price: $3.56 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
'Hours' is the second album from Funeral for a Friend and saw its original release in 2005. Was it to be a sophomore slump or an absolute comeback of the year though? Well, it's a pretty good album; I've heard better, but then again I've also heard many worse. It's not quite so strong as the band's first, still very good though and once more the album comes complete with many great tracks.
'Roses for the Dead', 'All the Rage', and 'History' are three of the very best tracks that this album has to offer; in total I'd say there are roughly six or seven tracks that are excellent though, and given that the album only consists of eleven tracks; that's not too bad at all. Throughout the album there are many top tracks present here, a number of truly inspirational moments which are always incredibly pleasing to listen to; it is these tracks that make the album well worth listening to.
If you've never before listened to the music of FFAF then I'd first listen to 'Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation'; once you've done so however and you like what you hear, definitely consider investing in 'Hours' as you'll surely not regret the decision one bit.
Funeral for a Friend - Tales Don't Tell Themselves

Having let the post-hardcore sound run its course; FFAF then turned their attention to a more straight up rocking approach with album number three. It's a lot more rock based, the post-hardcore twinges are still very much there, but it was definitely quite a change in direction for the band. The songs seem softer, the music is different but still it's very good.
Some will like the album whilst others will hate it; if you listen to this expecting it to sound like the band's first two albums then you'll be disappointed, if however you go in to listening to it with an open mind and are prepared for a change in direction from the band then you'll no doubt enjoy it very much. It's not a perfect album, it does have its faults; it's still well worth owning though and it is in fact an album that you'll no doubt wish to play time and time again.
I still say the band's first album is their best; 'Tales Don't Tell Themselves' is certainly very different though so definitely do consider investing in this album as it's still very much a Funeral for a Friend album and still most certainly very strong. Not the band's best but still well worth a whirl.
