FFX-2 Gunner Costume Screenshots & Tips

Continuing our cosplay tour of Final Fantasy X-2 dresspheres, let's take a look at the Gunner costume, not just for Yuna, but also for Rikku and Pane! This fun outfit looks cool and lets you play with prop weapons (but be careful where you carry them; cops won't know they're fake).

On this page I've got screenshots, links to tutorials and other resources to help you design your FFX-2 Gunner costume. At the bottom of the page is my Gun Mage Cosplay Hall of fame. Be sure to add a link to your photo gallery, if you've cosplayed a gunner dressphere!

Legal stuff: FFX-2 is © Square-Enix, 2003. Square allows fan cosplay, but not for-profit videos featuring their characters.

General Gunner Dressphere Cosplay Notes

A few observations on the FFX-2 Gunner

Yuna's Tiny Bee Gun in Final Fantasy X-2The gunner dressphere is an unusual costume: asymmetrical fringed or flounced skirt over shorts, high boots, belts and a midriff-baring top. As usual, Yuna, Rikku and Paine each have their own riff on the outfit.

The tough part is creating the guns (unless you locate cheap, used versions of the old Tiny Bee Gun Playstation 2 controllers, shown at right). Yuna, Rikku and Paine use identical guns. They actually have "Tiny Bee" written on them in the Al Bhed alphabet, if you want to be completely accurate!

Note: The PS2 controller replica (above right) is correct for the in-game model; the concept art (below right) shows two screws on the grip, but I only see one in the game.

Examples:
  • Kaze The Dark Wind's Tiny Bees look great, and she notes she weathered them slightly since Al Bhed tech is mostly salvaged, 1000-year-old artifacts.
  • gerodere's Tiny Bees are balsa and styrene. (You may be able to find metallic styrene for the gold parts)
    • See thus prop gunmaking tutorial using styrene to create Yazoo's gun in FFVII:AC for ideas. You could probably do the same with a piece of wood or foamboard in the middle.

    Youtube user fallenparty gets us started with bizarre animations of all the in-game dresspheres. Don't want to KO the girls, but these show the colors of the costumes most accurately (concept art and screenshots from my TV tend to be oversaturated). Plus Yuna's gunner introduction and a spherechange showing the gun in HD (timestamp 1:55, last video)

    You know Yuna's gunner costume like the back of your hand, right? Well, maybe not all the details. Here's a few tutorials to help you along:

    Helpful resource: Texture map of Yuna's in-game model. These are stretched over the model, but if you look carefully it's like a Yuna pattern!

    For screenshots, I'm going to cop out for now and point you to all the gunner Yuna FMV screenshots on my main Yuna cosplay page. Later, I want to get more in-game screenshots of Yuna's gunner costume, but right now I'm trying to get through all the dresspheres first. Here's a few new Yuna pics until I get organized.

    Rikku Gunner Dressphere Reference Screenshots

    Rikku's added a western twist to her gunner costume, with chaps (undies underneath) and silver conchos on the outside of the leggings.

    I've got some in-game screenshots below using Scan, but the most valuable screenshot resource is PrettyGothGirl's Rikku model rips in a variety of action poses. But here's my screenshots to help you with this costume.

    Paine Gunner Dressphere Reference Screenshots

    Paine's gunner costume is dark, with studs, a short skirt, flared collar, and suspenders/garters holding up her leggings a little like her warrior costume. As always, Paine gets by on high heeled boots.

    In game, the pendant hangs on a chain of twisted wire, but I doubt anyone else will notice.

    As usual, when it comes to the default dresspheres, it's impossible to choose. The best may be those anonymous Japanese cosplayers, but I don't know their names so I prefer to go with people we can credit! (Hypocrisy on last link below).

    I have a feeling there are even more great gunner Paines and Rikkus out there. Have I missed anyone?

    Perhaps not the tippy-top of gunner Yuna cosplays (see comment above), but I like the attention to detail, from the earrings to that odd leather strap on her left wrist. Also, gradient dye job on skirt.

    She wins with the proper Rikku-attitude, and she's brought along a gunner Yuna and Paine.

    Nice. Somewhere in her photo gallery, she has four construction photos showing step by step how she created her guns, but now I can't find em, argh!

    Not the best cosplay, but I must give homage to a butch and decidedly dykeish Paine. (Who served as a helpful reference for my Lucil/Elma portrait.)

    YuRiPa Play Arts Action Figures

    These are getting hard to find

    These action figures are highly detailed and may give you some costume information. Two problems: (1) they're only available for YuRiPa's default dresspheres (2) they're rare, so they're expensive! They're available on Amazon for $80-100 apiece, but you can sometimes find a good deal for all three on eBay.
