We've Got to Have Games and Toys and Fun at All Ages

We could call this something like Desktop Geek Stuff You Can't Live Without Now and Executive Toys Through the Ages, and Places to Go to Raise Your Cool Factor with the tribe (both personal and office).

At the small office where I first worked, our executive -a man in his late forties- was a very proper gent who appeared to be completely lacking in a sense of humor. Nobody ever caught him laughing or playing with harmless stuff like paper clip chains.

Nobody, that is, until someone brought in a Slinky and left it on his secretary's desk.

The toy vanished into his office during the lunch hour, and throughout the afternoon we heard the distinctive metallic kzzzsh kzzzsh of the Slinky as it walked from one hand to the other.

When we left for the day, we noticed a strange, peaceful smile upon the distinguished face. Needless to say, that Slinky stayed in his office from there on out and our boss's mood was measurably improved with each passing day.

ThinkGeek - Cube Goodies!

The Cool Factor

what are the rules of acquisition and tribal status?

A Cool desktop toy is only Cool if it draws the proper attention.

A desktop toy that passersby stop and look at in respectful silence a few times a day has a pretty good Cool factor. Its Cool factor doubles if it makes no noise, since it is getting the attention on its own merit.

The desktop toy that vanishes during its first week HAD a high Cool factor.

If the desktop toy vanished during its first lunch hour, its Cool factor was off the charts.

What's your Personal Cool Factor?

You are the best judge of your Cool Factor, of course. But here's a guideline. Look at your desk or personal workspace, and give yourself ONE POINT for each of your things that are cool.

Example::
Coffee cup from the generic stack in the break room - 0 points.
Coffee cup with your daughter's name on it - 1 point

Stack of rubber bands - 0 points
Stack of rubber bands held by a laughing Buddha - 1 point for trying

Way Too Much Cool Fun Factor

There's cool and then there's Cool. Beyond that, there is also a Cool Factor at the executive level. Those little things that say "I'm in charge here, and that means I get the Cool Stuff (and can play with it on company hours)". Granted, some of this Cool Factor stuff encourages thinking, meditation, deep digging into the soul where results are found .. like the Executive Sandbox, which just radiates cool.

Very Cool USB Factor

get some good tribal nods

There is something completely and totally fun (and admittedly pretty geeky) with USB. The idea that we can add a TON of gadgetry to our already powerful systems in a rather parasitic fashion... too dang fun. At this writing, I have my trackball, an external hard drive, my second mouse, my drawing tablet, and something else (I've forgotten what it does but it looks cool) all plugged into the stationary keyboard. Then I type on my wireless keyboard, leaving all that USB niftyness resting on my desk a few feet away. Luxury...

Here's something that happened to my husband, who owns a used vending machine business: He had the boss of a large company buy a 1950's vintage Pepsi vending machine in really good condition (lots of $$ for him to buy that one) for his office...That was a really cool office accessory, as he would always offer his guests/prospective clients a bottle of pop for free from the machine. As you might imagine, every one of his employees was envious!
