Replacing the Fuel Pump in a Fuel Injected Fiat 124 Spider

I just got done replacing the fuel pump last weekend in my wife's 1980 Fiat. She has the 2.0 liter fuel injected version. Here are a few tips:

1) Before removing the fuel pump or filter, you need to release the pressure on the fuel lines. To do this, first remove the gas cap. Then remove the vacuum line from the top of the fuel regulator (located on the driver's side of the engine right beneath the valve cover). Then attach a hand vacuum pump to the fuel regulator and apply about 25 pound of vacuum. This will release the pressure on the lines.

2) Drain the gas tank with a hand held transfer pump. If you can't drain the tank this way, make sure you have a catch basin handy when you remove the fuel lines from the fuel pump.

3) Remove the protective shroud from the fuel pump by slightly loosening the nuts holding the pump on until the shroud pulls free.

4) Loosen the fuel line running from the tank to the back of the fuel pump. If you haven't drained the tank, have a large gas can or other container ready, and pull the line off and stick it in the can.

5) Let this drain for a while.

6) Remove the fuel line between the fuel pump and fuel filter.

7) Remove the nuts holding the pump to the body. Make sure to have your gas container ready, and drain the pump into the can, as it will have some residual gas in it.

8) With a 20mm wrench, loosen the large nuts at the base of the rubber bushings on the fuel pump bracket. You should be able to loosen it enough to pull the old pump out and slide the new pump in.

9) Tighten the large nuts back, but not all the way, so you have some give when installing the new pump.

10) Attach the new pump and bracket back to the car, leaving the nuts slightly loose (so you can put the shroud back on later).

11) Reattach both fuel hoses making sure to screw the clamps down tightly.

12) Tighten the large nuts holding the bracket together down tight.

13) Install the shroud again and tighten the nuts completely.

14) Reattach the vacuum hose to the fuel regulator, and put the gas cap back on.

15) Pressure test the pump and lines by starting the car, and examining the pump with a flashlight to look for leaks.
