Fiberglass Cloth
Fiberglass is a lightweight material that is used to make reinforced plastics and for various end product applications like boat building, swimming pools, and automobile manufacturing. The fiberglass discussed in this article is not the traditional fiberglass that you will find insulating your house.
Fiberglass Cloth is used in many different applications these days. The base of fiberglass cloth is made from fiberglass "strands" which come in large rolls. Fiberglass strand is generally used as the base of most fiberglass cloth and mat products. Some people might use the term "strand" in reference to "string" which is fairly accurate. However, today, a lot of fiberglass strand is made from multiple strings of fiberglass that is wound together and sold in a large roll.
Some applications for fiberglass cloth are related to the marine industry:
Boat building: People building boats often need to lay down a layer of fiberglass cloth before covering it with resin. When the resin hardens, this becomes the hull of a boat.
Repair: many customers buy fiberglass cloth because it is great
for repairing boat problems.
Small marine: fiberglass cloth can be combined with carbon products to make moldable fabrics for canoes, kayaks, and other water craft that
need even more strength.
There are many companies that are in the business of making fiberglass
cloth. During the last decade, the fiberglass industry has seen the rise of Asian fiberglass producers. But a lot of fiberglass can be acquired from US domestic sources still.
