Fibromyalgia - what is it?

Fibromyalgia or FMS is a name for cluster of problems that causes widespread pain affecting the muscles and the joints in our body. It is a chronic condition, but it is not life-threatening or progressive and does not cause permanent damage to muscles, bones or joints.

The Fibromyalgia symptoms makes its sufferer feel tired most of the time and causes pain in the muscles and "tender points." Tender points are places on our body that hurt when touched and includes the neck, back, hips, shoulders and limbs. People with fibromyalgia may have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, restless leg syndrome, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called "fibro fog."

No one knows the exact causes of fibromyalgia syndrome. This syndrome can be gotten by anyone and it is most prevalent with middle-aged women. It is estimated that 5 million Americans suffer from FMS.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Pain is the most distinguishing characteristic

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome (fibromyalgia syndrome, or FMS), or a cluster of problems.

Fibromyalgia is called the invisible disease. It is appropriately named as such because it's sufferers look fine on the outside but inside they are often tired and in lots of pain.

Pain is the most distinguishing characteristic of fibromyalgia. For a person to be diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, certain key criterias need to be met. Pain has to be present in all hands and legs for atleast 3 months and there has to be pain felt when pressure is applied to atleast 11 out of 18 identified trigger points in the body.

The pain waxes and wanes, varying in intensity. The pain of Fibromyalgia is not constant. The pain comes and goes and some days you might feel less pain while other days you might be in excruciating pain. Certain triggers such as lack of sleep, cold or humid weather, mental stress or physical activity generally increases the pain level.

The second most disabling characteristic of fibromyalgia is fatigue. Not getting enough rest and sleep for the body to recharge will generally cause fatigue. The muscle pain is sometimes the cause of you not getting the amount of rest your body needs. This in turn again causes most FMS sufferers to also suffer from sleep apnea, breathing problems, bruxism (involuntary teeth grinding usually during sleep), limb jerking and RLS (restless leg syndrome). All of these conditions contribute to the fatigue of fibromyalgia.

Anxiety and depression are also common amongst fibromyalgia sufferers as the mental and emotional problems usually develops along with the physical trauma. Many FMS sufferers also complain of mental blocks and confusion, experiencing difficulty thinking clearly. This overall mental fogginess has been termed "fibro fog."

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include headaches, restless leg syndrome, skin sensitivity and rashes, dry eyes and mouth, Reynaud's syndrome, and various neurological problems.

Stress and its links to Fibromyalgia Symptoms

stress is your enemy

Stress is known as the silent killer. Stress has been attributed to heart problems, blood pressure problems and several other health problems and stress is also linked as a trigger for fibromyalgia. A stressful event in a person life may trigger the onset of fibromyalgia. Symptoms of fibromyalgia often occurs after an experience of mental shock or serious illness. It is believed that stress unmasks the fibromyalgia disorder in people who have a genetic disposition to it.

Fibromyalgia is thought to be a central nervous system disorder in which either pain-sensing nerves are excessively sensitive, or the brain is extremely sensitive to pain impulses. People with fibromyalgia experience more pain when they are stressed. You need to control your stress levels as more stress will most definitely increase your fibromyalgia symptoms.

By simply having fibromyalgia is stressful. FMS sufferers have to constantly deal with pain, mental cloudiness and overall fatigue and this by itself is stressful for anyone. Having problems accomplishing simple tasks around the house or at work can be stressful enough if you don't even consider the financial implications that can arise if you are hindered from working your job properly. Not being able to accomplish things is stressful, especially if it affects your employment situation.

Stress reduction is an important part of managing your fibromyalgia. Here are a few ways that may help alleviate some of your stress.

1. Good self care. Eating right - a nutritious diet, regular exercise and ample rest are very important.

2. Practice body awareness. Being aware about how your body feels and how it reacts to certain situations and tensions can help you better manage your fibromyalgia symptoms. Using relaxation and other techniques when the pain starts to begin can help you reduce the onset of fibromyalgia pain.

3. Change the way you think. This takes practice, but it gives you a chance to respond to situations instead of reacting.

4. Keep a stress journal. Stress journals are a great way to keep track of your fibromyalgia triggers and what you did to reduce the pain. Being aware of your triggers will help you avoid the stressful situations that causes them.

5. Learn stress management techniques, such as visualization, meditation and breathing. These techniques will help you physically and mentally relax and decrease both pain and stress.

If you decrease your stress, you will probably experience less pain and fatigue from your fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia and Exercise

exercising is beneficial for fibromyalgia pain management

One of the most recommended treatment for fibromyalgia is to do light exercises.. This may sound strange because people suffering from FMS hurt more when doing physical activity but the key here is to do right amount of the right kind of exercises.

Every person with fibromyalgia has a different exercise capacity, so you need an individualized program. You are recommended to talk with your doctor and physical trainer to help design a workout routine that is just right for you.

Remember to always do gentle stretching of your body before any exercise to help reduce stiffness and also warm up your muscle with light activity like walking.

Some activities and exercises are especially good for fibromyalgia. I recommend you read this article on Fibromyalgia Exercises to learn about the the different type of exercises that are perfect for FMS sufferers.

Pain Relief Strategies for Fibromyalgia Patients

Treating the pain associated with Fibromyalgia can be difficult as a cure that works for one person may not work for another person. Below you will find a list of popular pain remedies that should help most fibromyalgia sufferers deal with their pain:

1) Exercise regularly. Regular routine of mild exercises will help your body become more relaxed and flexible and will help deal with your fibromyalgia pain. You should always consult your doctor before starting any exercise regimen.

2) Diet high in protein and fiber is another way to help relieve your fibromyalgia pain. Avoid the consumption of alcohol, caffeine and refined white sugar.

3) Use warm heating pads. Heating pads will help loosen your joints and muscles and help in blood circulation. They will make you feel better and lessen your aches. It is especially great to use after a fibro-flareup.

4) Use topical pain medications. Pain ointments can help reduce your muscular pains due to fibromyalgia.

5) Get regular massages. Deep tissue massage helps stimulate blood flow in the aching joints and muscles and will reduce the pain.

Unfortunately, despite the title of this lens, currently there is no known cure for Fibromyalgia. Often, people think they have found a "cure," only to realize later that they just had a period of cessation from their symptoms. We should still work to find a cure, but anyone selling you a product that they say is going to "cure" Fibromyalgia is just after your money, so be careful and get your medical information from reliable sources.

My wife died while under treatment for a disease that was at the time, 1984. called fibromyalgia. Reading this, I would guess that either more recent information has led to finer tuning of the disease, or she was misdiagnosed. She did not die from this, but instead from the heavy medication and her refusal to accept that she had a stomach ulcer. She died the same day that the ulcer was finally diagnosed at my insistence. Or rather misdiagnosed as a tiny ulcer about a quarter inch in diameter when the autopsy revealed it was the size of a teaspoon had eaten a hole in the stomach, and tore into an artery in the stomach.

At first, about 1967, she was thought to have Lupus or a close relative to it. Pain and inflammation started in her low calf muscles and gradually progressed to the thighs. Prednisone kept her able to work until 1977. At that time she was taken off of it at the maximum dosage. The withdrawal pain was so intense that she was on heavy pain medications and this resulted in the ulcer and the cover up of the ulcer pain.

Since this info says it is neither progressive no muscle inflammatory, I believe this is a different disease.

I am sorry to hear about your wife. The aspirin based pain relievers (and possibly some of the other types) can cause ulcers. I fear that back then, (which still happens now, but probably not as often, because doctors have a better understanding that the pain is indeed real) but before that, if the patient complains of pain, they'd give pain medication. Patient returns complaining of more pain, they'd just up the medication and up the medication. I had this problem with migraines I had about a decade ago. Doctors just wanted to give me strong pain medications as a way of putting a band aid on it, without bothering to look for an underlying cause. I had to work as an advocate for my own medical care, insisting to see an ENT. The ENT found structural problems, and as soon as those were fixed with surgery, my migraines were gone. If I hadn't stood up for myself, I would probably be addicted to pain medications. For Fibromyalgia, the current usual prescriptions are a low dose of antidepressants (not for depression, because the dose is too low to help anyone with depression, but more can be prescribed if a patient has depression also), a muscle relaxant, and a pain medication. I can usually get by with a muscle relaxant and a pain medication at night, and they both have a sedative effect. It's important for Fibromyalgia patients to improve their sleep. Cut out caffeine, keep bedroom cool, keep a regular sleep schedule, address any underlying issues that could be affecting sleep, like sleep apnea. Also get checked for Vitamin D and B levels, as Fibromyalgia patients are often low.

There is nothing that you can lose if you seek for your physician's advice first before opting for any Fibromyalgia Pain Relief . You must put into top priority your health and safety. There are a lot of alternatives as well as prescription drugs that can absolutely sooth you out of pain, but choosing the right one that would not leave any adverse effects might be a hard task.

Very informative lens. I'm working on my first lens - tracking aches and pains with the Accuweather Health Forecast. While I have FMS, I live with several other pain conditions as well, so sometimes it's hard to tell the jumble of symptoms one from the other. I did find that following the forecast for arthritis pain worked really well though for my FM symptoms, and I was able to plan when to get out of the house for a little activity. I'll recommend your lens...

I thought I would never be free of my aches and pains. God bless I have found relief since I started using natural treatments. My doctor said I can take them. I now feel refreshed and there is no pain anymore. These products (Biogetica) are a combination of Homeopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic therapies. They are an excellent assimilation of products that helps to relieve most of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The solutions address the root cause and aid in maintaining normalcy of the connective tissues all over the body and strengthen the muscles, ligaments and cartilages of the body.

Great information! I have found that high quality sleep, even more so that quantity, makes a big difference in managing my fibromyalgia. Treating restless leg and getting a good mattress really helped. And I completely agree with the assessment about exercise....it is a delicate balance.
The one thing I found that I can't tolerate is the deep tissue massage. I know several people with FMS who swear by the massage, but I find it is too painful, and causes me more stress.
When I cross a line,...too little sleep, too much activity, bad diet, lots of stress....I crash. It is like hitting a wall. There are no reserves left. And, there is no warning when it will hit. That is the part that I find most challenging, but fortunately it is rare these days.
Finally, attitude can make a big difference.
Don't define yourself by your illness. Too much attention to it, can amplify the symptoms. Get on with life as best you can.

    Rajays,
You are so talented. All the different lenses and they are very well put together. I give you 5 stars.

Please visit my lens. My friend suffered with the symptoms for years, she decided to try GoChi and slowly she got better. Her doctor was so impressed with her results that she recommends GoChi to all her patients. The doctor is now doing her own research with her patients, and is seeing great results with this product.

I'm also a big fan of EFT, the micro-trace mineral germanium, and the essential oil helichrysum for fibromyalgia pain.
