The Big Move

In the year 2000 my wife, daughter and I decided to leave England and move to the village in Spain where she was born. My second daughter was born here in December 2000.

I had been visiting Los Santos every summer for the past 12 years and had fallen in love with the beauty of the village and surrounding countryside.

Sitting high on a hill looking over the cities of Madrid and Guadalajara, the church of San Pedro Apóstol, can be seen from miles in all directions. At an altitude of 600 metres above sea level Los Santos has a unique climate, with temperatures in excess of 40 celcius in summer and below freezing in the winter. In fact I had my first "White Christmas" here in 2000.

For me the best thing about living in a small Spanish village is knowing so many people. I lived in a town in the south of England for almost 30 years but I only knew a handful of people. Here in Los Santos I know almost everone who lives in the village. When I walk down the street everyone says hello.

Since I first came here there have been a lot of changes to the village. Two housing estates have been built, doubling the population almost overnight, and there is more building planned. I am afraid that if this new plan goes ahead that, like many other villages in Spain, the community spirit will be lost forever.

How I Got Into Photography

Shortly after I arrived in Spain I took a evening course in Spanish at the Adult Education Centre in the village. In May 2001 I was asked to take some photos of the village from an outsider´s point of view for the Cultural Week, which is held every year. I had had some experience in photography from a previous job in England, but hadn´t done anything for ages. I took a roll of film and exhibited the photos.

The day before the start of the exhibition I had a call from the Mayor of the village. He said that he liked my photos and would I like to do a reportage of the Semana Cultural. Since then I have been the official photographer for the council and as a result I now have almost ten years worth of the history of the village sitting on my hard drive.

Over the next few weeks I will try to find the time to show them to you.

Really a perfect application of the time-honoured principle "form follows function," UGG Upside 5163 UGG Ultra Tall 5245 UGG Ultra Short 5225 never made any pretence to fashion or style. The original craftsmen focused on fit, function, and durability; and nothing about their styling or construction has changed over the years. Considered from the standpoint of fashion history, they as easily could have graced the feet of seventeenth century British explorers or Powhattan warriors as they adorn your pretty feet now. Ugg boots' contours, shapes, fit and finish are as basic and down-to-earth as any footwear ever. Ironic that a style so primitive and "organic" should dominate haute couture.

Designers at UGG 1647 have not, however, lost their calendars or stopped reading the fashion magazines. In addition to their classic high and low styles, UGG 5730 designers now offer high heeled UGG Rylan 1871 in new materials and textures- UGG Rainier 5189 for big girls with big plans. And, in a stroke of true genius, UGG 5819 UGG Boots 5819 UGG Caspia Boots UGG Caspia designers have integrated elements of timeless Scandinavian clog designs with their unique boot construction. The results are intriguing, beguiling, and almost too cool for words.
