Don't just sprint, always anticipate the next move
Improving your gameplay tips
Very often, I've seen many players uses the sprinting tactics hoping to out run his opponents. This sort of tactics will work if your opponent is using a weaker team or your player has a faster acceleration or sprint attributes. However, this fast sprinting tactics will not be effective against a more experience player.To improve your gameplay, always anticipate your next move to avoid losing the ball unnecessary.
Below are some of the effective simple tactics for your consideration.
1) Stopping the ball when your opponent is closing down on you
2) Using ball shielding tactic after you have pass the ball to a player who is heavily marked
3) Using fake shot and change of direction
4) A simple lob pass if the ground pass can be easily intercept under certain situations
5) Using the right stick to flick the ball (effective on the wing to create space for crosses)
6) Use close ball control tactics to control the ball better (L2/LT) or (L2/LT + sprint button)
7) Fast touch pass (aka ping pong soccer)

Double tap on the shoot button for corners
More responsive headers
During corner kicks in Fifa 10, most players have encountered that the players didn't head or shoot when the shoot button is pressed once.To avoid such issue, personally I always tap the shoot button twice for corners. I felt that by double tapping the shoot button, your players will not stop or pause when the ball is landing during a corner kick.
If you are using assisted shooting, it is also more effective to let go of the left directional controller so as to allow the computer to assist the direction of headers or kicks.

Fifa 10 Flag Glitch
Win points when you lose a online ranked game
Currently, there is this online ranked game glitch to allow the player who has lost the match to gain lots of skill points. Conversely, the player who has won the match loses points.This glitch is cause by a player changing his country in the EA.com profile site at https://profile.ea.com/myprofile.do
For some weird programming reasons, the EA server assume you are a "new" level 1 player playing against a level 30 player.
The solution to this online rank game glitch is to go to the online lobby to select your rank match and most important is to look at the other player's flag.
If you see a tiny flag (see screenshot above), this means that this player is exploiting the "Flag glitch". Only play with players having the normal flag size.

Ball Possession (Part 4)
Run into space
As in real soccer match, it is important to run and turn into space to have better possession of the ball.In Fifa10, the same applies as well. When your player have the ball, do not just sprint forward or pass the ball blindly forward.
Before making the run or pass, always observe your opponent's players movement and positioning. Move your players away from your opponent players and use less risky passes to posses the ball better. At some situation, you will also need to pass or run back to your defenders for better ball possession.
Most often, when you pass the ball to a player who is heavily surrounded by your opponent's players, the chances of losing the ball is higher.
If you really need to pass to a heavily marked player, then the player receiving the ball can use close ball control, ball shielding or a quick touch pass to reduce the chances of losing the ball unnecessary.

Sweeper role:
The sweeper plays a important role in Fifa 10 especially when you are using a lower rated team or when you wish to counter your opponent's fast forwards. Try it yourself to see if the sweeper makes any improvement.

To illustrate the importance of good defending and counter attack tactics, I've uploaded one of my online rank match to Youtube. This is a match where I'm using Seattle Sounders (MLS) to play against Germany (International).
This game illustrates the importance of good defending and counter attack tactics. To be able to defend well is the first step to learn if you wish to win matches. You should be able to observe the importance of switching to the correct player when defending quick counter attacks.
Defending tips:
Tip 1: Learn to switch to your correct player when defending.
Tip 2: Do not commit your defender too early to tackle the ball unless there is another defender covering him.
Tip 3: Use the call 2nd defender button to tackle the opponent near the penalty box area.
Tip 4: Clear the ball in the penalty box unless the ball can be passed confidently to another open space player.

1-on-1 with keeper using finess shot
R1/RB+shoot button (press it simultaneously)
In Fifa 10, most players find it frustrating to score when 1-on-1 with the keeper. The keeper is almost super human at times in stopping straight shots (better keeper AI then PES 2010).
One way is to lob the ball over the keeper. To successfully lob the ball requires good power shot and direction control. If you are very good at lobbing, then you should keep using it.
The second effective method when 1-on-1 with the keeper is to use the finess shot (R1/RB+shoot button). Instead of running straight, shift your player position at an angle before releasing the finess shot.

Practice the lob pass
Advanced gameplay tactics
In Fifa 10, the lob pass has been modified to travel at a faster speed as compared to Fifa 09. Most players are still avoiding the lob pass and only favour the short ground pass (X/A button).One of the key reason is because your player who is receiving the high pass will probably be tackled by the opponent player before he can safely bring down the ball. This is very true in Fifa 10 as well.
However, despite the risk of losing the ball, the lob pass is actually quite effective if you are passing toward a player in the far open space to be effective. The lob pass is most effective to quickly exploit open space players when your opponent is always using the high pressure/agression and calling the 2nd defender tactics.
Most often, I use the lob pass with about 50% power and with proper direction aiming. Practice it and you will find that the lob pass has its usefulness as well. Cheers.
Relax your hands on the controller
If you are holding the controller too tight, you aren't playing the game right
When I started playing Fifa, I often find myself having fingers cramps while playing against other players especially during a fast pace game.Mentally, I'm telling myself that you need to press the buttons and move the joystick to win the ball.
In actual fact, Fifa 10 doesn't really require you to keep pressing and moving the joystick unnecessary. Soccer is all about exploiting space and running into space to create more chances. Fifa 10 is definitely not a arcade game.
In a nutshell, soccer is all about:
1. Team work
2. Good defending skills (important to train)
3. Line of passing
4. Near support
5. Timing of passes
6. Counter attacks
7. Exploiting your opponent mistakes
8. Soccer/Football vision
9. Skill moves are good but not necessary
10. Using your geometry knowledge to move your players. Example if you are chasing a opponent into your half, don't just run behind him hoping to catch up with him. Always run towards the position where you can intercept his passes, line of movement and so on. Once you are in "the position", use some jockeying press to hold him off initially before making your next move.
11.Try not to dive in a tackle unnecessary.
If you find yourself always pressing the X/A button or R2/RT button to sprint all the time, it is time to stop doing it if you wish to improve.
Play Fifa 10 like a game of chess
Advanced tip
A valuable tip to share is to always look at all the positions and running movement of your players. This will help you to improve your game play tactics.Personally, I play the game like a game of chess. In chess, one will develop his pieces, analyse all possible moves to attack the opponent weak positions to gain the advantage.
Similarly, in Fifa 10, try not to limit your vision to the players who are near the ball. Observe all your players positions and movement before making your next move. For example, when your opponent player rush toward your player, try to pass it your unmarked player to create space. This will allow you to have more time to analyse your next move.

Luckily, this 40 yards goal was recorded by Justin TV for everyone to view the replay over and over again.

Saving penalty tip
Watch the player's head
To save a penalty kick, watch the penalty taker head movement. If the player's head turns to the right, there is a high chance that your opponent is aiming at the right side of the goal and vise versa.
Personally, I used this tip during penalty kicks to help me judge the penalty kick direction more effectively. Lastly, it is also more effective to move your keeper as soon as your opponent player starts to run towards the ball.

Ball possession (Part 3)
Train your vision
Most of us losses the ball against high aggression and pressure teams because they only think of where to play the ball only after receiving the ball.The meaning of vision is to look ahead for chance creation. If you have good football/soccer vision, you can see the next 1-2 built up passes before you made a pass. This is extremely effective to exploit defensive gaps against high aggression and high pressure teams.
By visioning ahead, this allows you to make extremely quick and effective built up passes to your players to create more goal scoring chances. One can also combine good visioning with effective pass and move tactics (L1/LB + X/A) to improve your attack.
To train your visioning skills, one method is to learn from real soccer/football matches.
Ball possession (Part 2)
Using close control L2/LT button
The second part of ball control is by using the close control L2/LT button. When holding the L2/LT button, the ball will be kept closer to your player's feet. Close control is quite effective when you are near the penalty box to "wriggle" your players into space for scoring chances.
In Fifa 10, personally I would say the close control is less effective than in Fifa 09 because in Fifa 10, your players are easily knock over by charging defenders even if you use close control. However, you can have higher percentage of getting being fouled when being tackled.
Another effective way to use close control is with the sprint button for fast turning the opponent's players. When your player has the ball with the back facing the opponent, observe the movement of the opponent player. If he is moving to your left, make a quick turn to your right by holding L2/LT + sprint button. You can also execute feint movements (left and right) before turning.

Using custom tactics
Many readers are requesting more information on ball possession how-to and custom tactics for 5 stars team. To achieve good ball possession, there are many factors to consider. I will explain these factors into different parts for easier understanding.The first part on ball possession will examine how ball possession is associated with custom tactics. In real life soccer/football, ball possession is important for any teams to create chances and team momentum (In Fifa 10, the "momentum" is something that needs to be explore further).
In the "Build up" custom tactics setting, the "Passing" attribute determines the distance of the passes support. If you have a low passing attribute, your players will be closer for the passes. Conversely, if your the passing attribute is high, your players will be positioned further for the passes.
Another "Passing" attribute in the "Chance creation" custom tactics setting affects your players' movement near the opponent's penalty box. If you wish to have more movement in the penalty box to create more passing chances, then this "Passing" attribute can be set higher.
Important:
Do also note that your players "Tactics aware" and "Vision" attributes plays a very important part in executing the custom tactics settings. If the player "Tactics aware" is low, then this player will not be that effective or slow to perform your custom tactics settings. The "Vision" attributes affects how well the player can run into space to create chances.
For better ball possession playing style, you can set the "Passing" attributes as follows. Do take it as a reference only and tweak it to suit your playing style:

Fifa 10 power header technique
In Fifa 10, the heading technique is quite different from Fifa 09. In Fifa 09, a power header can be executed by holding on to the shoot button.
However, in Fifa 10, it is quite different and the heading requires more aiming even for assisted shooting.
Power header techniques:
1. To execute a power header, press the shoot button and aim the direction stick just before the ball is about to land.
2. Observe the cross symbol on the field to gauge where the ball is going to land. This is to give you a guide on where you should aim your header with respect to the goal post.
3. Do not press the shoot button too early because in Fifa 10, if you press the shoot button too early, your player will not react to it.

Offside trap and Cover defender line tactics
Which defender line tactics you use or prefer?
In Fifa 10, there are two types of defender line tactics namely the "Offside trap" and the "Cover". My personal preference is the "Cover" defender line tactics, so what's yours? Cast your vote here to see the choices made by most players.
Offside trap:
If your defender line tactics is set to "Offside trap", your defenders will try to catch the opponents offside by moving up the defending line. Moreover, your defenders will stay in their defending zone and not move away from their zone unnecessary.
In my opinion, the "Offside trap" in Fifa 10 is more effective than in Fifa 09 because for some strange reasons, the Fifa 10 defender who is not near the ball is always allowing or helping the opponent player to be "Onside". Therefore, to compensate such AI issue, the "Offside trap" seem to be a good solution.
However, the main weakness of the "Offside trap" tactics is that your defenders may not be able to provide cover for each other and the lower rated team defenders (e.g. 2 stars) may also find it hard to catch the faster opponent players offside.
Cover:
The other defending line tactics is the "Cover" where your defenders will move towards the "action" when defending. The advantage of the "Cover" tactics is to allow more bodies to tackle the opponents and your defenders are closer to each other thus covering each other when defending.
The disadvantage of the "Cover" tactics is that your defenders will move away from their defending zone to help out the other defending zone. This defence gaps can be exposed by quick attack side switching to a unmarked player in the undefended zone.
To compensate such weakness, it is advisable to set your defence team width to around 60-70.

My Fifa 10 PS3 wireless controller settings
Update: Using manual shooting currently
Many readers are asking me to share my controller settings. Basically I play with manual shooting and semi for crossing; assisted for the rest.
The "Auto Switching" is set to 2 clicks to the right. You can try 1 click too but I will not really advice 0 (zero) auto switching unless you can switch really fast when making a cross or intercepting a rebound ball.
The 1 to 2 clicks auto switching helps to switch to the player closer to the ball.
By the way, the auto switching is still flawed because at many times, it switches to the incorrect player who is far away from the ball.
The auto switching has caused many players defensive lapsed as well when the incorrect defender is being "auto" switched to defend.
The only solution to the "Auto Switching" flaw is to press the switch player button quickly to the correct player.
The above serves only as a guide. One should always set to their preferred playing style.
Corner kick heading goal (New update)
Using custom set pieces - Seattle vs Man City online match
Prerequisites:
1. Create a custom set piece to position 2 players near the far post, for both the left and right corner kicks.
In Fifa 10, the heading accuracy of the players seem erratic at times. This short video clip hopefully will give you some tips on how to create goals from a corner kick.
When taking a corner kick, choose your custom set piece to instruct your players to run near the far post.
The corner kick power should be around 70%-75% so that the ball will at least reach the far post without being intercepted by the keeper.
The crucial key part is here. Try not to move the left directional stick when the ball is in the air. Allow the computer to position the far post player for you (player switching settings should be 1%).
When the ball is in the air, it is also quite effective to hold the L2/LT button to allow your player to fight for a better position before the ball lands.
Just when the ball is about to land, aim the direction left stick toward the goal and press the X/A pass button (once) at the same time. By pressing the X/A pass button, the ball will less likely to be headed over the bar.
Try it to convert your corner kicks into goal. Cheers.

Fifa 10 demo long shot glitch/exploit
Full Power Fitness 45 degrees Shot = Goal
Currently, the Fifa 10 demo has this glitch which allows players to virtually anywhere on the pitch (opponent's half). It is more effective to adjust your player to about 45 degrees towards goal before releasing the full powered fitness shot.Steps:
1. When your player has the space in the 3/4 opponent's half, adjust him to face the goal at an angle of about 45 degrees (slant).
2. Press the R1/RB button and hold the shoot button for full power.
3. Watch the ball hit the back of the net.

Fifa 10 Free Kick Stance
This question was posted by QPRbrad in the EA forum and I think that it is good to set up a poll here for readers' comments. I've voted "Yes" because the heels up and hunched back free kick stance does seem weird to me.

Only use this custom tactics as a guide only. It is essential to adjust your custom tactics to suit your game play style.
My Fifa 10 formation positioning
I'm employing a modified 4-4-2 formation using a sweeper (SW), central defensive midfield (CDM). left attacking midfielder (LAM) and right attacking midfielder (RAM).

Fifa 10 new patch released
PS3 and XBox360
Game Patch:
The day 1 updates for FIFA 10 have now been released on both PS3 and XBOX 360.
If you are experiencing any issues while trying to play, please make sure you have this update install.
To install your update:
For XBOX 360:
Please quit out of the game to your dashboard and then re-enter FIFA 10. At this point you should asked to download the latest FIFA 10 update. Once this is finished downloading, FIFA will restart and your game will be up to date.
For PS3:
The update request will be automatic. A pop up will appear notifying you of the latest update. Follow the onscreen instructions to begin the download. Once the download is complete, restart FIFA 10 and you will be up to date.

The game is now more realistic when players are obstructed (similar to real life tactics), the referee actually gave a foul.
Online matches changes:
1.Ranked games quitters will be punished by heavier points deduction
2.Ranked boosting using same opponent will become meaningless as re-matching means less points up for grabs in 2nd match (about half of what was available in the 1st match), followed by almost nothing in the 3rd and/or 4th rematch
3. Extra time and/or penalty shoot-outs optional, it can be agreed on between players after 90mins/extra time.
4. Game speed optional between players - can be changed/filtered in game create session/searches
5. The new custom set-pieces will be enabled in online play, However, if anyone's custom set piece is found out to have an almost 100% success efficiency because of a glitch or anything likewise that may be regarded as unsavory, they will be immediately disabled for an indefinite time.
6. Search filter allow you can search for an opponent with (for example) a 2* team as their default team.
7. No more custom tactics for online play! (rank and unrank)

How to upload EA Football World video to YouTube?
If you wish to share your favourite Fifa 10 videos on YouTube, it is very easy.Below are the steps:
1. Click on the "start" button to bring up the "Instant Replay" button.
2. Upload the clip to EA Football World. To see your video, you will need to create a account in EA Football World website
3. Once login to Football World, you will be able to find your uploaded video easily in your home profile page under "My Videos".
4. Look for the "Download" link under the video (see picture above) and click on it to download your video as a .FLV file (flash file).
5. Create a Youtube account if you have not done so and sign-in to upload your .FLV file to YouTube.
6. Done and enjoy.

* A more user-friendly manager mode hub/desktop* More user-friendly navigation system

* 2-tier bidding for players, first agree fee with club then agree terms with the player
* Manual growth removed but replaced with improved authentic/realistic auto-growth

* Pre-season friendlies added, arranged by the new Assistant Manager
* The Assistant Manager will also assess the importance of upcoming matches and rotate your line-up for you. This is especially visible in early cup games, where you can see that your star players often get a rest in these games. He can also be turned off so you can take care of all the team management without him interfering.
* Board confidence update after every game
* Ability to renogotiate with players immediately and not through negotiation history
* Transfer rumours
* CPU squad rotation
* Fix to the long-term injury bug i.e. there will be long term injuries
* No "available negotiations" cap, unlimitied number of transfer offers depending on your available budget
* Final decision on player transfers. You can bid for multiple players for the same position and if they all accept then you can choose which players to sign and which not to sign.

Making a United Kingdom (UK) account
The Fifa 10 Demo was out on 10 September 09 in UK!If you are located in other parts of the world, all you have to do is to create a UK PSN or gamertag account to download the Fifa 10 demo.
Since I'm on PSN, I will list out the steps to create a new UK PSN account.
1. Go "Create New User".
2. Create a new user.
3. Remember to select "United Kingdom" as the country.
4. After you have filled up the necessary details (fake home address and such) and password, go to the PSN store.
5. Go to the "search" feature in the PSN store and type in "Fifa 10" or "Fifa" key word. Do a search and you find the Fifa 10 demo.
Hope this tip will be helpful to those who are not in UK and can't wait to play the Fifa 10 demo!

Fifa 10 Free Kicks - Movable Wall
In Fifa 09, the free kick wall is fixed. However in Fifa 10, the wall is now movable. L2/LT will move the wall left and R2/RT will move the wall right. Pressing R1/RB will allow you to change your free kick taker too. Official Fifa 10 trailer - #1

I just bought a usb powered air ionizer!
Highly recommend if you play Fifa for multiple hours in your stuffy room
Just to let you guys know that I've just bought a usb powered air ionizer (USD$50) for my room. :-)The air in the room has become fresher with aroma and less dusty now.
I'm not sure if it helps in my Fifa game play too lol...
Since it is powered by usb, it will be powered on whenever I turned on my PS3 or laptop.
Hopefully, I will be healthier and more focus when playing the upcoming Fifa 10. LOL.

- in manager mode, do player improvements depend upon the formation used? I mean, if a team has a traditional 4-4-2 formation and you achieve more success using the conventional 4-3-3, will player growth be affected? In my manager mode, I picked up Hereford (default 4-4-2) which was a half star team and have been continuously using 4-3-3 to get an attacking edge. The doubt that I have is whether this regular use of formation will affect player growths. thanks

- when playing manager mode, I haven't found out how to acess the "player stats" - the only thing I can find is the overall rating/changes during the season, and tables for "most goals, assists, etc). pls help.... :-)

- For Fifa 10, the sounders formation was edited. For Fifa 11, it is the default.
