History of the World Cup

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was been formed in 1904 and immediately holding a football World Cup was proposed. The FIFA president, Jules Rimet, commissioned a study into a potential worldwide competition and at the Olympics in Amsterdam and it was declared that the World Cup would be held for the first time in 1930.
In 1931, Uruguay was chosen as the host of the first World Cup and Abel Lafleur was given the task of designing a trophy for the event and his art work was then given the name Jules Rimet Cup.
The tournament was on an invitation basis, but many countries turned down the opportunity of playing at the first competition.
The 1930 World Cup was the only one without a qualifying competition.
The finals was between Argentina and Uruguay in which Uruguay won 4-2.
