Fresh and Dried Fig Facts

The common fig tree, Ficus carica, is widely grown for its edible synonymous fruit the fig. It is found throughout its natural range in Iran and West Pakistan and also in the Mediterranean area and other regions of the world with like climate.

Thousands of cultivars, most nameless, have been produced or come into existence as human migration brought the fig to a lot of places outside its natural range. It has been a significant food crop for thousands of years, and was as well believed to be highly advantageous in the diet. The edible fig is one of the first plants that were cropped by humans.

Figs can be consumed fresh or dried, and used in jam-making. Most commercialized production is in dehydrated or otherwise processed forms, since the mature fruit doesn't transport well, and once picked doesn't keep well.

Fresh figs, but also very similarly dried figs, have the greatest mineral content of all common fruits. They are a first-class source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, copper, manganese and a high amount of fiber. Over 10% of the weight of dried figs is in soluble and insoluble dietary fibers.

Dried figs make a delicious snack if split in half and place in them some unsalted dried
nuts, such as almonds, walnuts or cashews for a great energy boost and nutrients. The nutritional value of figs is only minimally affected by drying.

Figs also carry a large amount of polyphenols - complex organic molecules that have antioxidant effects, Benzadehyde - an organic chemical compound that is rumored to have anti-cancer activity and a large concentration of molecules called coumarins, which are applied in the treatment of prostate gland and skin cancers.
