Time to reclaim your rights and stop living in fear of crime.

It seems to me that crime in the United States just continues to escalate.  Criminals are becoming more and more bold and have no regard for our civil liberties and lust for freedom - one of the founding principles of the United States of America.  I, for one, have seen enough.  I don't want my son to grow up in a world of fear where people are too afraid to leave the safety of their homes because of their fear of attack.

I think it's time that we step up and take some responsibility for crime prevention along side law enforcement officials.  I'm not a vigillante, but I also see budget constraints limiting the effectiveness of law enforcement and think they might need some concerned citizen intervention to help them out and reduce their work load.  We can all work together and return this country to "The Land of the Free and The Home of The Brave."

Crooks steal rubber ducks 

security guards charged with stealing from local mall

Wow! I guess some people are pretty desperate. Three Rosedale Center (Roseville, MN) security guards were charged with stealing shoelaces, boxer underpants, Bath & Body Works lotions, skateboards, cell phones, a flat-screen television, a margarita machine, cuff links, a tea kettle and even a pink rubber duck.

All that stuff and more is alleged to be amoung at least $20,000 worth of goods and cash stolen by the guards, according to court documents. Roseville police searched the suspects' apartments in Minneapolis and Roseville, and seized boxes of pilfered items.

A few of the stolen items were sold on the internet auction site e-Bay and others were fenced or returned to merchants for cash refunds, according to court documents.

All three suspects worked for IPC International, (based in Bannockburn, IL)which provides security for Rosedale Center. IPC has provided Rosedale Center security since 1996 and serves more than 400 shopping centers across the country.

Merchants started reporting the break-ins and thefts in October, according to criminal complaints filed in

"The XREP introduces not only amazingly miniturized TASER technology, but groundbreaking flight stabilization and microprocessor-controlled intelligent electrode selection technologies - in a package that weighs only 14 grams, or half an ounce. The XREP projectile is, by an order of magnitude, the most sophisticated weapon system ever launched from a 12-gauge shotgun platform."

XREP product images, video demonstrations, and public specifications will not be released until the keynote presentation. Limited previews of advanced features will be posted on TASER International's web site at www.TASER.com/XREP - with the keynote address and full product features being released on July 9.

The Company plans to release the XREP into a field test for 6 to 12 months starting in the fall of 2007, with full release of production in 2008 upon completion of the field trial phase.

Fire safety tips for your home office. 

Better to be safe, than sorry.

You don't have to officially work from home in order to have a home office. Home offices are wildly popular these days. The typical office worker has to get more done, in less time, with fewer resources than previous generations of office workers, and it only seems to be getting worse. Today, I think many office workers (myself included) are forced to bring work home to finish up after their family goes to bed...otherwise we would hardly see our familes, except on the weekends.

Keep in mind that when you have so many electrical devices in one room, you need to think about fire safety. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1) Don't overload your outlets. If you need more outlets, have an experienced electrician consult you on your options.

2) Use a surge protector at a minimum. If you can afford it, consider buying a UPS (uninterrupted power source) for even more protection.

3) Don't have lamps or electrical items that get hot near anything flammable like your drapes or curtains.

4) Make sure you give your power cords enough space, and don't stack things on top of your power cords. The current running through the power cords could make them hot enough to potentially start a fire.

5) Get a fire proof filing cabinet or safe for important documents. Even if you are not working from home, you still have important personal documents that should be protected from fire.

6) Be sure to do regular backups of your computer data and store those backups off site or in your fire proof filing cabinet. Set up a time on your calendar so you can receive a backup reminder.

7) If the smoke alarms in your home are more than 10 years old, the National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing them.

Cyclist says airport police went too far. 

Man faces trial after being tasered.

Stephan Orsak rides to and from some of the world's busiest airports on his bicycle, but the professional violinist has never run into a roadblock like the one he found in the Twin Cities.

While trying to ride his bike out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport early one evening in September, he was stopped by airport police. By the time the encounter was over, Orsak, 50, had been stunned with a Taser, arrested and jailed.

The saga of Orsak's arrest, as detailed on his blog at greencycles.blogspot.com, has sparked hundreds of comments, some of them decrying what they call police brutality and others admonishing Orsak to get some common sense.

Orsak said he'd broken no laws and that the officers' actions were unwarrented. He intends to take the case to trial.

"I'm fine with the mistaken stop," said Orsak, of Mahtomedi. "But when it's done in a rude way, in a belligerent way, then that, to me, speaks volumes about some kind of intent." Orsak believes he was "profiled for being a cyclist."

Of course, airport officials said they could not comment on the case, as the charges are pending.

The criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court said Orsak refused police instructions to stop riding, used an obscenity and "forcefully" shrugged his shoulder in an attempt to evade an officer's grasp.

Orsak, a slight man with boyish looks, plays violin for the Minnesota Opera. His Mahtomedi home doubles as a studio, where he gives lessons to young musicians.

Orsak was returning home after a Sept. 7 flight from California, when two officers headed toward the Humphrey Terminal stopped Orsak on Glumack Drive and told him he could not ride there.

When the officers told Orsak to take a different route, he asked what he would do the next time he wanted to ride out of the airport. This obviously angered the police who then gave him conflicting instructions as to what to do next.

That's when he "took the initiative" to end the conversation, was knocked off his bike and hit with the Taser stun gun, Orsak said.

He was charged with obstructing legal process with force, a gross misdemeanor, and four misdemeanor counts, including failure to to comply with a lawful order, riding a bicycle opposite adjacent traffic and failure to obey an official traffic control signal.

2 Held in Illinois Deputy Shooting and Standoff

ARCOLA, IL -- Two men were in custody Friday awaiting charges stemming from a wild crime spree in which authorities say the fled from a police stop, robbed a house, stole a vehicle, shot a sheriff's deputy, and took hostages at a bank.

The deputy was hospitalized in critical condition. The five hostages were later released unharmed.

The spree began during a a midmorning traffic stop the day before, on Thursday, when the suspects sped off after a drug-sniffing dog was brought in to search their car, State Police Sgt. Bill Emery said.

When Chief Deputy Tommy Martin pulled the van over shortly afterward, he was shot in the face and torso, Emery said. Martin was able to radio for help, and authorities chased the van at speeds of over 100 mph, with the suspects firing on them, before the driver lost control of the van as it careered over railroad tracks, and the suspects abandoned it, Emery said.

One suspect was taken into custody. The other fled into the bank.

He holed up there with five hostages, releasing four of them over seven hours. After speaking with an FBI hostage negotiator, the suspect peacefully left the bank with the remaining hostage, Emery said.

"They both agreed he would come out and surrender," he said. "We told him what door to go out and he went out the door with the hostage with him."

Authorities declined to identify the hostages. But Bill Pullen, 69, told Chicago's WLS-TV that he and his grandson Brad Pullen, the bank's 27-year-old manager, were among them. He said their captor "was only threatening" initially.

"His main thing was that nobody is going to get hurt, which you have a tendency not to believe in that situation," he said.

Both suspects were being held at Douglas County Jail. Authorities said they did not know which one shot the deputy.

Sheriff Charlie McGrew said Martin, a 59-year-old father of two, had one of two planned surgeries and it went "very well." The deputy was listed in critical condition Friday morning at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, said hospital spokeswoman Allison McLaughlin.

Arcola, about 150 miles south of Chicago, is home to an Old Order Amish settlement. The rural area has several Amish homes, business and schools, and horse-drawn buggies are a frequent sight.

Fighting crime with text messages

There was an article that recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal that discussed how wireless text messaging is being used to fight crime.

Specifically, the article discussed how police in The Hague in the Netherlands got a report that a boat had been stolen, they sent out a text message about the case to residents who had signed up to receive neighborhood crime alerts on their cellphones.

An hour later, a woman bicycling along a canal who got the message notified police via a phone call that she saw a boat that matched the description. The boat was found and the thief was arrested.

It seems that text messaging is pretty effective tool when used to fight crime. It allows the police to take advantage of residents willing to provide another set of eye balls to be on the lookout for criminal activity. Police agencies from Beijing to Boston are encouraging citizens to use it to report crime or inform on criminals.

In China, about a dozen cities have established text-message crime-reporting systems. Residents are encouraged through government announcements to use it when calling police could endanger their safety--situations such as kidnapping, theft on buses or burglaries at home.
