Ways To Get Rid Of Stress

You would be surprised at the number of people that are looking for ways to get rid of stress. We lead much more fast paced lives these days - a result of this is that even the most natural things become stressful. How many parents do you know that are stressed from simply being a parent? Children seem to want everything and we feel pressured into supplying it, and of course, guilty if we can't. Situations like that along with dealing with our jobs can lead to us feeling anxious and depressed. If these feelings are not kept in check or a lifestyle change is not made then we can find ourselves dealing with full blown depression.

If you are prepared to go into battle to fight depresion, you first need to find out if you are actually depressed. There is a huge difference between being depressed or simply feeling a bit sad. Naturally we all feel a bit sad at times - life deals us things that we mostly deal with and then move on.

However, depression is actually an illness with far more symptoms that sadness. Typical symptoms of depression are:

  • feeling tired all the time - however much sleep you are getting

  • crying a lot for what seems like no reason

  • being forgetful

  • extreme irritability

These are just a few of the most common ones, there are many more....

Depression can last for a long time, and unfortunately its something that a lot of people who are not suffering are uncomfortable with. Its very easy to think 'oh why don't you just snap out of it' but it simply just isn't that easy. If you think you are depressed then you should visit your doctor. This is nothing to worry about or be ashamed of, and you do not necessarily need to take anti-depressants.

There are plenty of alternative methods that give depression relief, if you are looking at how to conquer depression you should visit Stress and Depression Relief

Foods To Fight Depression

If you are suffering from depression, its a good idea to take a look at your diet. There really are foods to fight depression.

If you are depressed you are suffering a lack of serotonin - this is a brain chemical, which helps you to feel calm and less stressed. Whilst actual foodstuffs themselves do not contain any serotonin, they may help in increasing the production of the chemical in the brain.

The recommended foods were given to a group of 18 - 25 year olds who are prone to stress for a week. After this trial they did not appear to be depressed, even following a stressful situation.

Below is a list of foods that may fight depression

  • Brazil nuts - very rich in selenium

  • Peas - good source of vitamin B1

  • Liver - very rich in iron and vitamin B6

  • Sardines - rich in potassium, iron and B vitamins

  • Dark chocolate - the feel good factor comes from the flavour, aroma and the way it melts in your mouth

  • Chillies - help promote the release of pleasure-boosting endorphins in the brain

  • High fibre breakfast cereal - rich in carbohydrates to boost blood sugar levels

  • Bananas - supply mood-boosting carbohydrates and vitamin B6

Incorporate some of the above into your daily diet and you could find yourself feeling much better.

Things to avoid, apart from the obvious one of alcohol are tomatoes, potatoes and aubergines. These are all members of the nightshade family and contain a chemical called solanine, which is known to bring on mood swings

Stress Reduction Exercises

If you are feeling down - the best thing you can do is reach for your trainers and take some stress reduction exercises! Studies have shown that exercise can be more effective in treating moderate depression than drugs. This has to be good news. No-one really wants to be on anti-depressent drugs unless totally necessary. one study found that just thirty minutes of exercise a day really helped to improve the mood of a number of people that had been suffering from depression for a few months.

Even better is that a lot of forms of exercise are free. If you have a bicycle, jump on it and do a few miles. Get on your trainers and go out for a run. This is also a really good way to get some 'me' time - enjoy some music or simply just let the world float past you and think of nothing....

Not sure you have time to fit in 30 mins of exercise? How about getting off the bus one stop early and walk the rest of the way to work? Walk to school with the children instead of take the car.

Like everyone, there will be times when the last thing you want to do is exercise and you will reach for a chocolate bar instead. A cure for this is to write down how good you feel after you have exerciesd, and keep it near the chocolatle bars. You will then see this and know that if you do that run you will feel good and will really not need the comfort food at all.
