You may be asking what in the world are Fijit Friends and where did they come from. Part of the fun of the Fijit Friends is the story behind them.What happens when you mix experimental goo with music?

The story goes something like this. There were two sisters and their parents were scientists. One day their parents left out some experimental goo. The girls found the goo lying out in the open in the basement. While waiting for their parents, the sisters decided to crank up their music and noticed that the goo sprang to life into these Fijit Friends. At that moment the Fijit Friends were born.

We think that girls are going to get really involved with the fun storyline behind the toys.

We wanted to see how girls would react to the Fijit Friends. So we invited all the girls over to our house for an evening designed specifically for girls. We had cupcakes, nail painting, and dancing. It was a slumber party. The highlight of the evening had to be when the girls first met the Fijit Friends.When my girls first saw the Fijit Friends they fell instantly in love.

We had two of them Sage and Willa. The kids loved both of the characters equally. The kids loved interacting with the Fijit Friends by chatting, laughing, and doing all the things that little girls love. Their favorite part was when the Fijit Friends danced to the girls' music. These Fijit Friends can amazingly recognize beats and really come to life when you start playing music.

The kids spent the majority of the day with them. At the end of the day when the children said goodnight to their Fijit friends, the little robots yawned and starting snoring! It's adorably cute.

There are several things you can do with your Fijit Friends. You can make your Fijit Friends chat, dance, tell a joke, or go to sleep. When you first turn on your Fijit Friend she will ask you "What do you want to do now?" This is called the home mode and she is ready to have fun and interact with you. The belly button light turns on in home mode to indicate she is listening to you.

If you enter another mode such as chatting or dancing the belly button light will turn off. When the belly button light is off she is not listening to you. You can interrupt the other mode and return to the listen(home) mode by pressing the belly button light.

Chat
If you're in the mood to strike up a conversation, say "Chat with me". One of the most impressive features about the Fijit Friends is that they can respond intuitively to you. The way it works is that the Fijit Friends can recognize 30 keywords and respond in a way that makes the conversation seem natural. For example, if you say, "Do you want to chat?" she will reply " You betcha!"

You can also say "How do I look?" After checking you out, your Fijit Friend will say , "Looking good." Fijit Friends always respond in a positive supportive manner just like best friends are supposed to.

Fijit Friends can speak over 100 phrases. A list of reference words are included.

Jokes
If you are up for a joke you simply say "Tell me a joke." Fijit Friends love telling knock knock jokes so be sure and say "Whose There". Friends love making Friends laugh and Fijit Friends are no different.

Dancing
To get your Fijit Friend to start dancing you simply say "Dance with me." If there is one thing that Fijit Friends do better than anything else it is dancing. They were born to dance. Fijit Friends actually have something called beat detection. All this means is that Fijit Friends dance appropriately to the external music in the room. If the music is slow, Fijit Friends will dance slowly. If the beat picks up they will dance faster.

The Fijit Friends can twist, wobble their heads and ears, and move to the music. When the music is done playing she will even take a bow. What a performer?

Sings
In addition to recognizing external beats, Fijit Friends each come with four songs of their own. You can say "Give me a rap." Your Fijit Friend will start playing a rap.

Touch
You can squeeze, touch, and poke the Fijit Friends thanks to their tactile skin. The Fijit Friends will respond appropriately.

Sonic Chirp Mode
One of the most innovative features of the Fijit Friends is the sonic chirp mode. Mattel has created apps and webisodes with sonic chirps embedded in them. We can't hear "sonic chirps" but the Fijit Friends can recognize them. They can actually communicate with the apps and webisodes.For example while watching a webisode she might say, "I like this."

To activate the chirp mode you press and hold down the Chirp button on her head for 3 seconds. You will hear a sound and her belly light will blink. She is ready to listen for sonic chirps.

We feel that we have to share a minor hiccup that the Fijit Friends seem to have. The biggest problem with the Fijit Friends is that sometimes they don't recognize your voice. It appears that the voice recognition has its limitations. It works about 70% of the time, which is pretty good but far from perfect.

The first thing you should do is replace the batteries because the ones it come with aren't fully charged and are more for demonstrating the try me mode in stores.

Here is how you can improve the accuracy. You have to speak in a medium tone and not too loud or soft. You have to use the exact phrase and not just part of it.

Some people may be disappointed to learn that the Fijit Friends actually only recognize 30 phrases. So instead of saying, "Dance," say "Dance with me." Also the Fijit Friend will listen to you only when the belly button light is on. Don't speak when the light is off. You can press the belly button light to make the Fijit Friend listen again if it is busy in another mode.

Stand at least 1 to 2 feet away when speaking to your Fijit Friend. We did notice that Fijit Friends don't work well in noisy environments because they are unable to separate out your voice from the background noise.

Despite the little hearing issue every now and then, Fijit Friends are still big hits among girls of ages 6 to 7.
