Knowing how to diet can greatly improve your chances of a successful diet. One of the latest studies to help out in the battle to lose weight comes from Dr. Susannah Holt who has conducted research studies into discovering the most filling foods.

The theory behind this type of research goes sort of like this: feeling less hungry throughout the day should make losing weight a much easier task to accomplish. If you are able to consume foods that make you feel full for a longer period of time then this satisfied feeling should have a major affect on the overall amount of food that you consume throughout the day. This would then ultimately affect the amount of weight that you would lose as you diet.

Sounds reasonable to me...

In Dr. Susannah Holt's study each participant was given his or her choice of a 240 calorie portion from any of 38 different foods. Once the food was consumed then each participant was checked on at regular time intervals afterward to measure the degree of satisfaction (satiety) that the food was providing.

The food they had chosen, and the respondents responses were then analyzed to discover the reason why specific foods were able to satisfy hunger cravings for longer periods of time than other foods were able to. The most satisfying foods were placed highest on the satiety index and those foods which less reduced hunger were then placed lower on this list.

The resulting list or "Satiety Index" is an indicator of how each of these tested foods ranked as foods that were able to satisfy hunger. The reasons why specific foods were found to be more filling was also included in the study's final results.

The Factors That Make a Food Filling:

Protein content, fiber content, overall bulk, and fluid content all were major components as to why a food was ranked as filling on the satiety list.

Boiled potatoes were found to be the most filling food in this research study, and not by just a small margin, boiled potatoes were found to be very filling compared to the other 37 suggested foods. Although boiled potatoes were found to be the food which most greatly reduced hunger cravings among the study's participants, it was found that fried potatoes (French fries) did not produce the same satisfying result.

It is believed that the body's ability to store fat as an emergency food source is the reasoning as to why greasy food did not satisfy hunger cravings. The body prefers to take take the consumed fatty food, and store it for future use, rather than for immediate use. The intake of fatty foods is not used as an immediate food source, therefore the body does not advise the brain to quit eating, and you continue to feel hungry.

Popcorn and oranges were found to be satisfying because of the bulk amount that one could consume in relation to the number of calories they contain. You can eat a tremendous amount of these foods for very little calorie content.

The slow digestion of beans and lentils is believed to be the reasoning as to why they were found to be so satisfying.

Losing weight can be difficult so using every tool at your disposal can help to insure that you succeed. The most filling foods list is one more weight loss tool to aide in the battle against the bulge.

Weight Watchers introduced their Momentum Weight Loss Program in 2009 and one very unique and helpful aspect of this program was it's most filling food list.     Excellent information. One reason I don't follow the regular diets is that if I am told to eat 1/2 of this and 4oz of that, and it's not what I fancy and it leaves me hungry, I am going to want to eat something to fill me up. Better to eat something healthy that will fill and satisfy me. Nicely done.

    My dear, the strangest thing has happened in 2012. For some reason, my tastes have changed. I have now gone through caffeine withdrawal > oh wow, what a headache that was! And, I am actually changing the foods I eat and reintroducing other foods. Had thought I might contemplate vegetarianism, but not quite there. At one time, I was looking for the most filling foods, today, I'm looking for the most nutritious to stimulate total body health and brain health.

    Nice lens with lots of great tips and info. After doing really well with Weight Watchers about 7 years ago (I lost 70 pounds in about a year's time), I find myself struggling to get back off the weight that's been creeping ever so slowly back on since then (especially since moving in with my partner and having someone I love to cook for!) I'm starting a New Year's plan to seriously try to lose as of this week and will have to try to focus on some of these filling foods tactics. I will definitely give the boiled potato tactic a try!

    A little over 10 years ago I lost 120 pounds through careful nutrition (hate the word diet) and exercise. It took me 14 months and I felt incredibly empowered and physically strong, and a level of health I had not enjoyed for most of my life. Unfortunately I have gained it all back again due to not feeling I deserved to be healthy and fit. The physical act of losing weight was for me the easy part and I never did get rid of the 'fat mentality', despite the enjoyment I felt at being able to run up hill, and walk into most clothing shops and buy what I wanted, knowing I would look good. I need to find the dedication and commitment that I had back then. Hopefully this year, before I drop dead from a massive heart attack. The good news is that I didn't lose ALL of my fitness and health - I am stronger, but 10 years older! Great lens, full of helpful information, as always. Happy New Year to you and yours

    I do have to agree with boiled potatoes being very filling as they really do fill me up when they are a side dish on a meal. A food that I did not see on their list which I know to be very filling and nutritious is cauliflower so it is one that you might like to include also in a few meals..
