Editing and Post-Production
What does that mean, "we'll fix it in post," anyway? Here's a guide to some great "fix it in post" moments in Hollywood history that show the power of editing.
"We'll Fix It In Post" Examples
Films where the editors did some creative cutting.
- STAR WARS - Although editors Richard Chew, Paul Hirsch and Marcia Lucas deserve much of the credit for the success of this important editing-driven film, one special moment comes to mind. When the Tusken Raider waves his stick over his head and shouts, looking down at Luke Skywalker -- that is an editorially created moment. The actor only waved that stick once, and the editors simply reversed and replayed that piece of film as many times as required. Director George Lucas is often seen as an advocate of the "we'll fix it in post" theory.
- ANNIE HALL - This classic romantic comedy used to be a murder mystery entitled Anhedonia. Editor Ralph Rosenblum worked with director Woody Allen to eliminate the overarching plot and focus on the heart of the matter, a film about a relationship gone wrong. Talk about fixing it in post! In the final film, you can't even tell! Not so much a case of "we'll fix it in post" as a "we'll make something new in post"!
- GLADIATOR - When actor Oliver Reed died midway through shooting, editor Pietro Scalia had to work with the visual effects team to use footage already captured of the star and work it into scenes he'd never get to film. It's fixing it in post from beyond the grave.
- FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF - That long weird kiss between Ferris and Sloane was extended in editing; it wasn't initially scripted to run so long. "We'll fix it in post" or "we'll fix them up in post"?
- THE GODFATHER, PART III - Even those displeased by the film concede that Al Pacino's "silent scream" is a powerful moment. Removing the soundtrack from this moment was a suggestion from legendary editor Walter Murch. If only the entire movie could have been fixed in post...

This world is ever changing! You need to just keep up with the flow if you don't want to stay behind. The same is happening in my industry buyout music. Even a monkey can make a hit song these day
No! Editors used to have to make more careful choices.
