Film School Grads Are Cheap Labor in the Film Business

$100,000 in debt turning a knob on a camera

If you're thinking of film school, you'd better read this. Working in the film business and getting a movie made is like a universe unto itself, and it's completely different than what most people believe. That's the only possible explanation for the cost and popularity of current film schools. The perception is that going to an NYU, USC, or NYFA, Full Sail, or LA Film School somehow provides you with better training and a leg up over people who don't go. The reality is the exact opposite. Film School grads are in a far worse position to find work and make movies than their peers who simply skip school and begin working in the business.

This photo is of a typical film set in Los Angeles. The guy in the foreground wearing the hat is the director. The guy in the striped shirt in the background is the AC. He's a film school grad with $100,000 in college loans that he hasn't started repayment on yet. And when he does, it will sting at anywhere from $800 to $1100 a month. The film school grad is being paid about $100 a day to TURN THE KNOB on the video camera. Meanwhile, the director of the movie not only hasn't gone to school, he didn't even finish high school.

The fact is this: film school students are cheap labor in the film business. In fact in my training course I show my students how to hire film school grads for next to nothing.

The next sad fact is this: the crew jobs film school grads are fighting over require absolutely no education. Going to film school is like spending 4 years learning to tie your shoe. As mentioned, the Assistant Cameraman's job is essential to turn a knob on a camera. A Boom Pole Operator's job is to HOLD A POLE. Production Assistant's carry things and bring people their coffee.

If you're thinking about film school, you need to know this stuff. For the absolutely straight up, little known deal about why film school is a joke in the film business, and what to do instead, check out www.filmschoolsecrets.com
