Ranked #4,536 in Games, #194,096 overall

Final Fantasy Legend's Place in the Gaming Universe

The Final Fantasy Legend was the start of the SaGa franchise, under its real name Makai Toushi SaGa. Due to marketing reasons, it was decided that releasing Square's game under the Final Fantasy franchise would be best. The SaGa series has grown over the years but its roots as the first full RPG on an handheld device , the Game Boy, does it proud.
The first 3 games of the series are part of the Final Fantasy Legend Series

Customer Feedback

The very first RPG for Gameboy is one of great depth! It completely adds new depth to the Final Fantasy games, with new features to quicken the pace of the games, such as now rather than spending hours earning experience points and going up levels, you can now purchase levels, spells, weapons and stuff like that. To quicken the game, it now has it where when you buy a weapon, you can only use that weapon so many times before you lose it, so the game makes you drive forward to new goals, places and even worlds. Speaking of worlds, the real depth of the game is that there are dozens of worlds, to which you and your party of four travel to one world after another before facing an evil Goddess herself. Another depth of the game is that you can now control monsters as a part of your band of warriors, and you can change the monster into different things by eating meat left behind from dead monsters.

Appease All of us Final Fantasy Legend Fans

It'd be so cool if they remade this game for a current handheld system - and make sure they released it here. I'd love to be able to play this on my DS

Final Fantasy Legend's Prologue

It has been said
that the tower in
the center of the
World is connected
to Paradise.
Dreaming of a life
in Paradise,
many have challenged
the secret of the tower,
but no one knows
what became of them.
Now,
there is another who
will brave the
adventure ....

Storyline

You and your 3 teammates are trying to restore balance to the world and in order to do so you need to fight the faces of evil in Paradise. Ok, the storyline's a bit lame but this is 1990 and the beauty of this game lies not in its storyline but in having graphics, sound, and gameplay aspects that are far beyond a Game Boy title of the time.

So for all of those people who are getting this game used and might need a little boost without having to resort to ugly and boring walkthroughs, I've created a mini-walkthrough of the beginning. Enjoy.

Gameplay in FF Legend

Seeing as this is an RPG I'm sure you can all guess what is expected of you. You raise characters, gather equipment, and fight monsters and bosses in order to unveil a storyline.

The battle system is party turn based. That means you choose your entire party's actions in one turn.

Character Classes

The Kind that is Expected From a Game Titled "The Final Fantasy Legend"

There are only 3 kinds of classes in this game, however the differences between each are so vast that it provides a very different aspect to RPG's and, most importantly, a lot of replay value as you'll most likely attempt to beat the game with different types of parties; there is a choice of gender for Humans as well.

Humans
Humans are best at using close range weapons due to their high Strength. They can hold more items than any other class but they can only raise stats via potions you buy. So if you like to spend money on equipment, buying potions will become harder. So maybe you'll learn a thing or two about budgeting as you're playing this game? Also humans can't use magic. .

Mutants
My favorite of the classes. Why? They can use magic; they level up from being active in battles; they have good strength and agility so whether you're using a close-range weapon (strength) or a far-range weapon like a gun (agility), you're set. Did I mention they raise stats simply from being active in battles and can use magic? Believe me those are BIG pluses. Also, if you have a mutant, you've probably noticed there are 4 spots already occupied even though you didn't put anything. Those are random spots. As you battle, the abilities in those 4 spots will change over time. Usually you'll get magic like Fire or Ice, which is way cheaper than buying Fire or Ice magic items but like I said it can disappear at any time so if there's one you really like, try not to get in useless battles before a boss or buy a magic scroll.

Monster
I can't don't like this class much for seriously playing the game, but they are fun if you just are out to have a unique experience. They are limited equipment-wise, though they do come with special abilities. Also the only way to raise stats is to metamorphose into another monster? Sounds easy - Wrong! You have to eat "meat" that you may receive from other battles in order to become a stronger monster . However if you eat meat from a monster that's considered weaker, according to the game, you'll most likely end up transforming into something lame. If you like to gamble and take notes, this is the class for you. If you don't like to gamble but you think monsters are cool, once you have a monster you like don't eat meat until the next boss. Boss meat almost always means a better monster. Seeing as Monsters can be hard to get used to, don't get any during the first time? Leave that to when you replay the game.

Note: There are Monster FAQ's out there in order to find out how meat will affect them, and what abilities each monster type has.

The party I would recommend for your first time playing is a Mutant as a first character, and your next 3 characters should be 2 Mutants and I would suggest having one Human on your first time playing - as raising stats with only items gets expensive, but you still want to have one to hold extra items. You can pick out the genders.

Final Fantasy Legend should be in your collection

Releases

The game was originally released for Japan in 1989 and only a year later arrived to the USA for its debut. Japan has also seen Wonderswan and Mobile phone releases in 2002 and 2007, respectively, however the only rerelease of this game for the US was in 1998 by SunSoft.

Map Legend

First off do notice there is a map right there (how could you NOT notice?). This is only the first map before you enter the Tower to Paradise. Here's an explanation of the map.
Red: land
Blue: water (you have no boat)
Black: bridges
Brown: mountains
White Squares with #'s: Cities and Dungeons.

Here are the cities in order
(do note some of the names are made up because the game doesn't mention all of the city names)
1. City of Tower
2. City of Hero
3. Castle of Armor
4. Castle of Shield
5. Castle of Sword
6. City of the Lakes
7. Cave of Bandits

Beginning Walkthrough

Choose very carefully your main character. Read above at the Character Classes section to make your choice if you need help. That character will have better starting stats than your 3 future characters. So, you've Chosen? Well then you start in city 1. If you wander around you'll see some shops. One of the "shops" is actually a lady who'll ask you to pick 3 more partners. So make your choice; they already have beginnning equipment. Do note that the GOLD equipment is not really worth buying at this time. Just do a few battles, get a few potions, and then leave for city 2.

City 2 is the town of Hero, go talk to some people to find out what's special about it (I won't tell you everything after all or the game won't be as much fun). You should probably do more battles to earn money, buy Bronze equipment, and raise your stats.

So, are you somewhat strong now? Good, you're ready for your first boss. Go to city 3, the Castle of Armor. Don't run into any of the guards or you'll be kicked out of the castle immediately. Simply evade them and go up to the King. You'll have to fight him and then you get the King Armor. This is an important item for later on!

Are you still alive? You should be, now go to city 4 to the Castle of Shield. Running into the guards will give you battles. Go up and you should see the King be murdered, follow the murderer into the secret pathway and fight him. Now you've got the King Shield.

Now I could tell you to go straight for the next boss, but I wouldn't want you to miss out on the reason why you're fighting him. So instead go to city 5, the Castle of Sword. The guards won't do anything but tell you to see the King, so go see and talk to him! There is no fighting for this King. Instead he'll ask you to help him which you will and that's why you're going to...

City 6! Talk to people there and you'll realize what you're supposed to do to help the King (I'm not spoiling it for you...You have to read). So now that you know, and since the villagers were so nice to tell you where it was, you get to go to City 7, the Cave of Bandits. When you get there, running into bandits will get you in battles so you should avoid them. Go look around and you'll either end up in the room with treasures or the room with the Boss first. It doesn't matter which room you end up with first, so you get to figure it out for yourself. So now that you've beaten the boss, and collected treasure, go back to City 5 and talk to the King who will give you the King Sword.

So what do you do with these 3 King items? Well I'm sure it was very obvious when you were in city 2 that you were to collect them and put them on the Hero statue. So go back to city 2 and put each item on the Hero statue. (You stand right next to it, open your menu, and click on each King item). And now you get a boss! Woohoo! Now beat him! Beat him! Are you still alive? I hope so. Because now that the statue is full again, the door to Paradise has now opened. So get your butt to city 1 and prepare to go through the game without my help.
After all, by now you should be confortable with the game.

Legendary Music from a Legendary Game

Final Fantasy Legend delivers well

This is another Nobuo Uematsu classic. Not to mention this is a Game Boy game with decent music! Considering the hardware setbacks, the music is amazing for its time.

Similarities to Final Fantasy

No wonder even Final Fantasy fansites make the mistake of thinking this is an actual Final Fantasy game.

  • 4 Characters. Older Final Fantasy games and some newer ones use a 4-person battle party
  • Many names of items and magic are the same
  • Similar gamplay. The equipment system, the styles of picking your moves, and how you explore dungeons and run into battles - these are all in the same format!
  • Leveling system of mutants is very similar to Final Fantasy II's leveling system.

I absolutely LOVE this game! I have been streaming it in bits and pieces on my JustinTV/Twitch TV channel ( http://www.justin.tv/prince_david/videos if you want to catch some that I recorded). It's a real challenge to learn, and I find the hints aren't too helpful to get around but it's quite a world to explore. I love all the different weapons you can have, and even the monster mechanic is a lot of fun. Oh yeah and the music is really something special.

Any fan of Final Fantasy has to check out the new graphic novel by FF mastermind Yohitaka Amano titled "Mateki: The Magic Flute". I finally got my hands on the novel last week and it is a must for any true final fantasy fan. THe drawings are beautifully detailed and the story line is fun and exciting!
