How I finally stopped Panic Attacks!
My personal journey through dealing with anxiety, and how I learned to stop panic attacks!
Does a panic attack feel something like this?
If you're like me, you know what it feels like to experience a panic attack. Sometimes, the only comfort is hearing from others that have experienced the same fate. For some, there is no one that can calm you down, for others; there are only a handful of people that can talk you out of it. But, when there is no one around, you truly know what it feels like to believe you just may be dying.I have dealt with panic attacks for about 5 years. Sometimes they are mild, other times they can be a truly horrifying ordeal. I used to get them while driving at night. My phone would be dead, and everything seemed so . . . fake. It was like I was in a dream, or perhaps a nightmare.
My panic attacks usually stemmed from little things like my heart skipping a beat. Even know this is normal, I would feel it, and a sudden wave of panic would rush over me. It felt so hard to breath. I was dizzy. If I was talking to someone important while it happened, I would struggle to stay in reality. My worries would then become apparent, and worsen because I felt I would create a bad impression or blow a deal over my anxiety attack. Even worse, I was afraid my boss or whoever I was talking to would think I was on drugs, or drunk.
How I learned to stop the attacks
I searched the internet and visited my local bookstores like crazy. Buying and reading everything I could on how to stop panic attacks. But unfortunately, to no avail. Then, in what I could only describe as a true blessing, I ran into an old friend of mine from college. I hadn't seen this person in 3 years, so we went out for lunch to catch up. I remembered that he too had his own battles with anxiety. I initially brought it up, asking how he was doing, and admitted that I still struggled heavily with my panic attacks. What happened next changed my life.
He began telling me this long story about how his panic attacks got much worse, so much worse, that it costs him his job. Then he mentioned, that in desperation, he bought a book online about how to stop panic attacks. I wasn't surprised because I had also done the same, but hadn't had any luck. So anyway, he goes on to tell me that it changed the way he thought about panic, and the techniques in the book were so effective, that his panic attacks began diminishing in severity and frequency in just a few days. After about three weeks he said, they were gone. Poof!
Well needless to say, I was a bit taken aback by this as I have never read anything that even remotely helped that much. However, I was curious, so I asked him to share some of the techniques, which he was glad to do.
I wrote them down on my notebook I had with me, but I had to borrow a pen from the waitress as I had forgotten mine at the office, much like me.
We finished our lunch and left a tip, and he asked me to keep in touch and let him know how it goes.
I tried the techniques, with unbelievable results
I went home, still a bit skeptical, and pinned up the list on my refrigerator with a magnet. I remembered how passionately he vouched for these techniques, so I was determined to give them a go.Over the next week, I used these techniques with outstanding success. They really worked! I couldn't believe it. I was able to calm myself down much faster than ever before. I could stop the attacks before they got to that, "I'm dying"stage.
Unfortunately, he only shared with me the techniques for calming yourself down once you get an attack. Though highly effective, I still would get panic attacks. I wanted to stop panic attacks all together so they never happen in the first place!
I called my buddy up, almost frantically, and asked him for the name of the book and ISBN number so I could start searching for it at book stores or on Amazon.
Well he then tells me an ISBN is not necessary, because he bought and read the book online! Of course, within the next five minutes I was on the website and bought the book.
Well I have to say, after reading the book; it really did change my perception on anxiety.
It's been 3 months, and not one panic attack.
I am truly thankful that I came across this; it has really made a difference in my life. If you would like to check out the book, you can find it here.
I myself bought the book, but even if you don't, check out their website because it has a really great video on the front page about what goes on during a panic attack. The video blew my mind. Give it a watch. Plus, they even give you a free mini e-course on stopping panic attacks. So you can try before you buy.
To everyone dealing with this horrible disorder, I hope you find peace. It is a wonderful thing.
