In Clanton, Mississippi is 10 years, Tonya Hailey raped and savagely beaten by two white racists, James Louis "Pete" Willard and Billy Ray Cobb. Shortly after Tonya is found and taken to a hospital, while Pete and Billy Ray will be heard boasting of a bar bomb on what they did to Tonya.

Father shocked and angry Tonya, Carl Lee Hailey, remembers a similar case last year, by four white men raped black girl in a nearby town, and were acquitted. Carl Lee has decided not to let that happen in this case. After much deliberation, when a massive acknowledgment event takes place, the jury acquitted Carl Lee because of temporary insanity. Carl Lee returns to his family, and the story ends with Jake, Lucien and Harry Rex have a festive drink, before Jake is holding a press conference, then leave town for a while to be reunited with his wife and daughter.
