How to Find a Patron God or Goddess

Pagan Deities

A question I am asked and that I see asked frequently by those newly entering a Pagan belief system is "How do I find my Patron God?"

They spend a lot of time and energy focusing on how they can determine who their God is supposed to be. Energy that could be better spent on other things as they learn about Paganism and find their place within it.

Here I will give you what you need to know and do to find your own Patron God or Matron Goddess.

Why Have a Patron God

What purpose do they hold

For most Pagans their Patron God is not some far off entity. This is a being that they have a strong personal relationship with. This is who they call upon when doing rituals and spells, if they practice magic within their beliefs. A Patron God provides guidance and support as they grow and develop in their own spiritual and religious practice.

In our family, our Patron God is Herne, sometimes called Cernunnos. He has been with us since before we married and has stuck with us even as we were telling him to "bugger off" and go away during our own times of crisis. Herne used to speak to me a lot before Paul and I married but generally speaks to or through Paul these days.

Our Matron Goddess is Modron. She has been with me since just before I met Paul and arrived in a time when I was starting to focus more on my role in life as a mother and finding myself ready to be a wife.

How Does a God Choose You Then?

eeny, meeny, miney, moe

At some point when you become Pagan, or sometimes even before, the Gods begin to take notice of you. Gradually, those you have a greater affinity for pay closer attention and may start coming to you in your dreams or through other means.

Some Gods may decide to "test" you. This isn't to prove your worthiness, far from it. That is a concept conceived in the idea that people are inherently unworthy and must prove themselves otherwise.

These tests are more to make sure that you are capable of handling the energies that particular God may bring into your life by combining His energies with yours.

In my own life, I found myself being tested a lot when Lilith decided she was going to be part of my life. To the point that I finally told her to back off and leave me alone for a while as it was getting way too much for me.

How Do You Know a God is Trying to Reach You

you were phoned...

Sometimes they can be very blatent and in your face. I met Herne, for instance, as described in Herne the Hunter when he decided to occupy my body for an evening. He had been coming to me for some weeks before that though in dreams, and dreams within dreams for brief moments.

Lilith initially came in with the scent of cinnamon. I'd smell it in the most unlikely places. Blodeuwydd too made herseslf known with scents, but it was people around me who kept smelling flowers when none were about.

Kali kept placing information about herself in front of me. It seemed for a while that I couldn't pick up a book without there being something about her in it.

Paul's Matron Goddess, Gaia, came to him in the form of a rose quartz. He found himself drawn to one particular stone in a little shop in Los Angeles. When he tried to leave his apartment without the stone the next day, he developed a very nasty pain in his right groin that stayed until he went and put the stone in his pocket.

The ways, as you can see, can be varied. You must let yourself remain open to hearing, seeing, smelling, or otherwise experiencing the messages they are sending you.

On the other hand, if you get sensations that make you uncomfortable, do not be afraid to tell whoever is sending to go and leave you alone. You are not obligated to accept any messages you do not want to receive. And, frankly, just because you are receiving messages does not mean they are from Gods or even from benevolent beings.

Remember: They don't carry ID cards and just because they have no bodies does not mean they are incapable of lying.

Once a God Tries to Contact You

What do you do next?

When you start getting these messages however they may come it is time to start your investigations.

If you have a clear idea on who it is, then find all the information you can on that particular God and study Him, or Her, in depth. Look in books, on the internet, record your dreams if He is coming to you in that way. Meditate. Ask questions and listen for His answers.

If these messages are coming to you as symbols, then you have a bit more work to do. You'll need to pull out your reference books and websites and find out what you can about the symbolism of what you are smelling, seeing, or otherwise sensing or experiencing. Listen to your gut instincts here as well. If you find yourself being drawn towards one particular Pantheon over another then look that direction.

For instance, when I was smelling cinnamon everywhere I began by looking at where cinnamon had been used in ritual and what deities were associated with it. That led me to information about the early Babylonian and Sumerians and from there to Judaism, all of which led me to Lilith. Cinnamon was burnt in the Jewish temples and was associated with Lilith.

My own Patron Gods and Matron Goddesses over the years

A study in world deities

I have worked with several different Gods over the years, mostly Goddesses. Early in my ventures into Witchcraft and Paganism my focus was on the feminine side of things and I tended to ignore the masculine side.

The first I found myself drawn to was Nimue, The Lady of the Lake, in her younger Maiden aspect.

Around this time I changed jobs and began working in the critical care unit at the hospital. In my role as a nurse I was constantly surrounded by death and dying and more and more I found myself working with the Hindu Goddess, Kali, or noticing that she was hanging around in the background of my mind as I worked. I only ever asked for her assistance once, and that was at a particularly harrowing time with a very ill patient.

Lilith and Blodeuwydd both showed up about the same time in my life at a time when I was rediscovering my own femininity and strength.

The two who have stuck around longest have been Herne and Modron.

Currently, I am being "courted" once more by the Gods as I move forward through life. The Norns have been showing up a lot lately in dreams, shamanic journeys, and during energy healing work. I have been looking more closely at them, but have not yet decided if I am willing to dedicate myself to them as they are requesting.

Didn't I tell you? You are allowed to say no to a God's request.

I've been a Pagan for about two years now. About a year ago, I began receiving dreams from Sobek, the Egyptian crocodile god. At first, I did tell him to back off, because I had always hoped Anubis would have chosen me instead, as I have loved him since I was a child, as well as all the other Egyptian gods and goddesses (I'd always been drawn to them in my childhood). But, it was only these past two months I finally accepted Sobek and began receiving more dreams from him. The most recent warned me of a choice I was thinking about making, and after the dream, I realized the choice I was leaning towards was a horrible decision that would ultimately affect my whole life. Strange how these things work. :)

I had read in forums about Gods and Goddesses "Choosing" or "Calling" you. i didn't understand what that meant. I never understood until now how a person would choose a God or Goddess. But now, after reading this, everything has cleared up. For one, you don't choose them, they choose you. Which has made me wonder, I think The Horned God has been trying to contact me in the last little while... He was the first one I researched because I had already heard about him several times from movie, text, etc. So because he keeps popping up like that, perhaps I'll have to keep an eye out for any other cues that he is calling me :) I already take preference to him over others. This article really helped me fully understand things. Thank You!

The Gods can do that - just pop up everywhere for you. Kali did that with me. For a long while I couldn't pick up a book without seeing reference to Her in it.

    Hullo there.
This is a very interesting article... I was wondering more about an "ancient egypt" sort of paganism, and have been quite drawn to the god of death, Anubis. I'm new to this belief, and so I am somewhat confused on what a patron god could be to me. Is there any articles to your knowledge of egyptian gods and godesses? I'd quite appreciate some help on this. Thank you much.

I am not familiar with the Egyptian deities as such. However, any good book on ancient Egyptian history will be useful to you. I would also suggest looking for information on Kemeticism, which is a variety of Egyptian reconstructionist neopaganism.

    Thank you much,
I'll be looking into what you've mentioned to see if it grabs my attention. :)

    Hi NanLT,

I'm quite new to paganism, in fact I don't think its correct to call myself a pagan yet.

I had a dream in which I felt drawn to a woman in a wheelchair in a way I can't even describe not maternally or sexually but an almost blissful love of her [this dream came after I prayed that if a deity wanted me could they make it clear] and after doing some research I found that the most common symbol of Isis is the throne. Also, I saw a woman in a wheelchair on my route to school and to be quite frank the people I pass on my daily commute almost never change.

I previously felt drawn to Minerva and Athena (because of my love of knowledge) but could these signs be Isis reaching out to me ?
  • NanLT May 9, 2012 @ 5:46 am | delete
It's OK to call yourself Pagan whether you've been on this path for 1 day, or 10 years. Just saying...

A wheelchair could be seen as being throne-like. Especially within the mind which likes sending us messages using symbolism. Isis is a strong possibility for who you could be seeing. What are your instincts telling you?

With the constant contact between various cultures along the Mediterranean there is a lot of interweaving between the attributes of various Gods and Goddesses in the region. You could also look into some of the ancient Babylonian and Sumerian Goddesses. Many of them are pictured seated upon a throne.
  • Pre-Pagan May 9, 2012 @ 3:07 pm | delete
Thanks, that gives me a true feeling of acceptance, I wish I could hug you.

If I'm being honest I'd read about Isis prior to the experience but I've always felt drawn to Athena/Minerva because I'm quite apt when it comes to education (I'm recognized as gifted + talented in a few subjects) and I've always attributed it to the divine but I've always had an affinity for Athena and Minerva.

Do you think it would be helpful if I were to make offerings to them and ask for further guidance from them ?
  • NanLT May 9, 2012 @ 3:20 pm | delete
There is no reason at all why you cannot seek guidance from both. I would hold off on making offerings until such time as you decide whether or not you are willing to devote yourself to Her. Until and unless that happens I've never heard a complaint from Isis from people who call upon Her for guidance.
  • NanLT May 9, 2012 @ 3:21 pm | delete
As a side note, I would also suggest looking to see what if any links exist between Athena and Isis.
  • Pre-Pagan May 9, 2012 @ 5:09 pm | delete
Alright, thank you so much for the advice: I'll do as you suggested and tell you how it goes.

    Blessed be. :)
  • [Formerly] Pre-Pagan May 13, 2012 @ 2:32 pm | delete
Hey, I'm really happy to tell you that I found Athena truly is the goddess who has chosen me. Following another prayer for guidance and confirmation my mother explained to me how olive oil had helped her after someone attempted to harm her using obeah (Caribbean black magic) and caught sight of an owl. I found out that these are both prominent symbols of Athena.

Thank you sooooooo much for your advice :)
