Beautiful images! I've always wanted to see the smokey mountains.

Here's a little secret. A good place to visit fall foliage is at a local cultural garden, such as a Japanese Garden. The Japanese Red Maple trees are unprecedented in their flaming, red colors!
  • TransplantedSoul Nov 10, 2011 @ 7:45 pm | delete
Not just for New England - but my favourite place (next to Canada eh) is Vermont.
  • BoyScoutPopcorn Nov 9, 2011 @ 9:05 am | delete
Great pics! Suggestions... Perhaps you should rename the segment titled "Pacific Northwest & California" to something like "Northern California". Other than naming Washington and Oregon, you spent the entire segment detailing the NorCal region. Maybe a segment on the Mid-Atlantic states would be a good addition. The whole VA/MD/PA/WV region is AWESOME in the fall. And I'm not sure I'd put the Appalachian Trail in the Midwest. That's definitely an Eastern trail.

My community has a system of public parks designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted and during the fall the foilage burst with colors of orange, yellow, crimson, brown, tan. Thanks for adding the Foilage Map!

The most beautiful place I've been for foliage is Arlington VT, near where Norman Rockwell lived. In the valley of the mountains at a curve you are surrounded by colorful wooded mountains on all four sides. It is absolutely gorgeous.

One of the things I love about living up in Michigan, is the amazing turn of the leaves. I'll have to keep in mind that foliage map though if I visit anywhere else now though.

I absolutely love the Fall. I have not explored some areas of the US in the Fall, but I do love the Fall colors in Arkansas (where I live), upstate NY, Vermont and The Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Thanks for sharing these wonderful pictures!

Hopping over from my Colorful Fall Foliage in NJ lens to say I agree Massachusetts has amazing fall foliage. The state is one I've spent a lot of time in as my grandparents lived there, we vacationed there every summer, and when we travel to Maine, always pass through and look at some of the old places from my childhood there. But we're in a wooded part of NJ, it gets pretty here most years, this year we have to see how the hurricane and all the excess rain will affect things.
  • lyonsmcgovern Sep 22, 2011 @ 3:27 pm | delete
I love the Palisades across the Hudson river in October.
  • Carl Aug 31, 2011 @ 2:43 pm | delete
You simply can't beat the north east in the Fall Time. The foliage of the Maple and Oak trees, traditional Oktoberfest in some places, the pumpkin and gourd harvests, not to mention the history of Halloween really got its start in the Northeast. California and Florida are to the summer what New England and NYS are to the fall and what Canada is to winter. I am actually quite surprised that the western states got noted for the fall season. I would hate to be in California during the fall.
  • mbgphoto Aug 24, 2011 @ 8:22 am | delete
We plan our fall travels so I can see the colors of fall multiple times. Last year I first experienced fall in Nova Scotia and the eastern seaboard in late September-early October, then back home to Missouri to experience fall in Missouri and Illinois in mid October and finally a trip to Atlanta to experience fall in Tennessee and Georgia in November. Love this lens...stopped by to review places to travel this year and leaving a blessing here.
  • nature-photographer Jul 31, 2011 @ 9:40 pm | delete
I live in northern Utah and agree that there is some excellent fall foliage to be found here in the mountains.
  • Tipi Jan 14, 2011 @ 6:02 pm | delete
This is beautiful Kiwi, it feed a longing in me to see the fall colors again. I love the wilderness of northern Minnesota where I'm from. The area has a lot of virgin land in the national park, and that is home to me, and God's Own Country. I know there are many places just as nice, but we all seem to have our favorite places in this world we live in.
  • Ramkitten Nov 17, 2010 @ 9:23 am | delete
I'm originally from New England, and I have to say (biased as I am) that there's nothing like autumn in the northeast. But now that I live in Flagstaff, I really appreciate the beauty of fall on the San Francisco peaks, where the yellow aspens contrast so beautifully against the dark evergreen of the ponderosa pines and an occasional patch of red gambrel oak. e

Went hiking up a mountain today here in North Carolina and it was breathtaking....breathtaking in two ways, hiking UP the mountain and the stunning colors!

I love the fall colors. The best I ever saw was a Brandywine Maple in either Grass Valley or Nevada City California. It was a very old tree that had been brought from Gettysburg. Gorgeous colors and the tree looked like it was lit up from the inside. Beautiful!

  • happynutritionist Oct 23, 2010 @ 2:52 pm | delete
Very nice! I'm adding this to the plexo on my Colorful Fall Foliage in New Jersey lens. It's beautiful around here right now...I am in the northern part of the State, as you say, it changes just by driving down from the hill we live on, or further up the hill. So many variables.
  • dustytoes Oct 22, 2010 @ 3:17 pm | delete

We have yet to see a lot of Fall leaf color changes yet in the Rochester, New York area, but sure to be gorgeous this year as always. Since I've always lived in the Northeast, it never occurred to me that there would be glorious autumn colors elsewhere. Well done!

I just love all those photos. In Britain our fall colours are good but not as dramatic as yours.
  • makingamark Sep 22, 2010 @ 9:05 pm | delete
What a great foliage map! I've seen one for New England but not for the rest of the USA - and you make a jolly good point about it not being exclusive to New England - although they do have rather a lot of trees!

I was in New England in the Autumn four years ago and was really sad I had to come home just before the colours turned properly!
  • Andromache Sep 21, 2010 @ 11:18 am | delete
Great lens! Very informative!! The best fall foliage anywhere is in the beautiful and historic Hudson Valley. The patchwork of colors through the Catskills contrast to the deep blues of the Hudson River and make a spectacular display that can last for several weeks! For a great leaf peeping weekend, check out the Mum Festival in Saugerties, New York and learn more about the historic town of Saugerties at http://www.squidoo.com/saugerties-new-york

What a beautiful lens about fall foliage. I would very much like to return to the Pacific Northwest in the fall - I visited Mount St Helens, Mount Hood and Mount Ranier in the early 1990s and would love to go back. Lensrolled to my Autumn lens :)

  • poddys Sep 11, 2010 @ 12:52 am | delete
There is nothing quite like the wonderful colors of the trees in the fall, especially in the Midwest. I miss living in Indiana for that reason, there are few places that look the same in the UK.

Nice work. Sadly, many super-busy office workers fail to get out and enjoy the beauty just beyond their urban areas. Here in Wisconsin, we're relishing the change in colors--thanks for mentioning our fair state!--as many of us do every year at this time. It's a sight to behold.
  • GrowWear Oct 10, 2009 @ 10:20 am | delete

One of fondest wishes is to really get to see and experience fall in New England. I have never had a chance to do so yet and I'm just dyin' to go. I know it's not the only place, but I've seen fall in many other places. I figure I will get a chance to sooner or later, but that is definitely the spot I want to see the most.Beauitful lens, as always.

This is delightful! I followed you home from Tipi's, she's my sister. I grew up in Minnesota and now live in Wisconsin, so I've had a lifetime of beauty. I particularly enjoy folks who are seeing the colors for the first time as they weren't familiar with deciduous forrests.

Although I miss the east coast foliage changes (we moved away years ago), I think that here in Utah we come very close to matching New England's beauty. But after the fall colors we get the best snow in the world.

Fall can be one of the best times of year to see not only the northeastern states, but many states across the country, even into the southwest!
