This is all great! And you should do this!
But... how?
Today there is so many sources online that will teach you how to build up a niche, and most of them will charge you for that knowledge. But what I'm going to tell you about here is a simple trick! Confused and Asking: Where to Go Next?
How to find ideas and knowledge needed to create a niche???
You've joined Squidoo (Great!) and created a few lenses (Even better!) about topics of your interest or your passions. And now you're stuck! Where to go next?!!
You probably looked at other lenses or visited SquidU to find an answer to this question. And many of the answers mentions 'niche' lenses.
If you're like I was when I first joined Squidoo, you probably don't have a slightest idea what this word means or what, in Earth's name, are these people talking about!!!
So, you start digging!
And find out there is lots of talk about niche marketing, there are people called 'marketing guru'... lets face it: This is a whole new industry! And some people are making a living on it! Unfortunately, many are trying to sell bullsh!t and few are worth spending your money.
Just to be certain you understand what I'm talking about, here is a quote by Kimberly, one of Squidoo staff members posted in a thread on SquidU: "But there's another category of people there: The vampires. Vampires are people out to cheat and trick and scam and make money off of YOU, off of people who want to use Squidoo. Vampires happen. But that doesn't mean you need to be suckered by them." - You can read the rest in a sticky thread with a name: Curious about unofficial ebooks/tools about Squidoo?
So, do you really need a guru to tell you how to create a successful niche lens?
My take on this: Never ever have I paid a dime for any of this stuff... Still, I've managed to place 3-4 of my lenses to top 2,000 and some of them have even reached top 100 on Squidoo.
And how did I manage this?
Use resources Squidoo gave you! Look at your backyard before looking at any other places. Squidoo gave us tools, it's on us to use it properly!

What Exactly is a NICHE?
You might wonder: Why should I care?
Niche is a term connected and used by internet affiliate marketers. It's related to smaller segments of larger markets. A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focusing on: niche defines the specific product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that is intended to impact. Every single product that is on sale can be defined by its niche market. (Source: Wikipedia)
You've read it and keep thinking: What exactly does this mean?!?
Example 1:
- your market: DOGS
- your targeted customers / demographics: DOG OWNERS
- possible niche market: DOG ACCESSORIES
- a niche inside a niche: DOG CHEWING TOYS <<< possible lensography?
- a niche inside a niche, inside a niche (LOL): LENS REVIEWING AND RECOMMENDING SPECIFIC CHEWING TOY <<< this is where your lens should be!!!
Example 2:
- your market: BOOKS
- your targeted customers / demographics: PARENTS, CARE GIVERS, TEACHERS, GRANDPARENTS
- possible niche market: CHILDREN BOOKS
- a niche inside a niche: SOFT BABY BOOKS <<< possible lensography?
- a niche inside a niche, inside a niche: REVIEW OF A BOOK FOR BABIES <<< this is where your lens should be!!!
Example 3:
- your market: CLOTHING
- your targeted customers / demographics: TEENAGERS, PARENTS
- possible niche market: T-SHIRTS
- a niche inside a niche: FUNNY TEEN SHIRTS <<< possible lensography?
- a niche inside a niche, inside a niche: t-SHIRT DESIGNS QUOTING PARENTS (Like No-No list, or something similar) <<< this is where your lens should be!!!

Yes many. For instance I got a lens on explaining job loss to kids. That's a niche inside a niche and another is about cars. How men really feel about their cars. Are cars better than women? And my favorite niche is about army wives pet peeves. That a pet peeve niche LOL. I think most everything is a niche some tighter than others

I found my niche in life, now I'm writing lenses about it. Actually a couple of them. I learned that I may be too broad right now. Need to think smaller. I accuse myself of going off on tangents, so maybe the tangent is what I need to write about. So much to learn. Thanks to all for the guidance.

How to Reuse Paper Rolls
Best Source for Finding a Niche to Expand
Right on your dashboard!

Sometimes an answer
to all of your questions
is right under your nose!
What Can Be Found in Your Stats?
Summary Tab

How to Reuse Paper Rolls was 1st lens I've created in this niche. At the moment, I have 22 lenses in this niche along with 4 WIPs and couple more ideas where to go next.
This lens, as you can see above, has been in top 100 for 147 day (and still is) and it has been in top 2.000 from the moment it has been created.
Why is this lens gaining so much traffic? I have only one word for you: USEFUL! People find info shared in this lens useful in saving them some money but also in making their home less cluttered with trash and in finding the ways to reuse something everyone has in their home! And accumulate daily!
Another thing you should be paying attention is a number of clickouts from the lens. This information is important since it's one of variables that is considered in determination of lensrank.
Another thing you might gain from increased number of clickouts is increase in selling (if people click on product links) or free backlink (if you featured someone's blog on your lens and that person decides to link back)! And it could happen! It surely happened to me with this lens!
How to get more clickouts?
- useful links for further reading
- linking your related lenses (text links)
- related products in selling modules
Traffic Tab

Tab which interest us the most when we consider finding and / or expanding a niche is traffic tab inside 'my stats' tab on your dashboard.
Information you'll find here are ones we should look into for new lens ideas! And what interest us the most are data about keywords which got people on your lens!
Here are some of the keywords used by visitors which got them to How to Reuse Paper Rolls (couldn't add them all - it would be too hard to read, but this will give you a fair idea what I'm talking about):

As you can see, most of the people are looking for way to create a craft project with paper rolls. Apart from those who are looking for ways to reuse paper rolls in general.
Same stats which you see here (or similar) are showing on my other lenses about ways to reuse ordinary household items we usually trash: CD or DVD, aluminium foil, popsicle sticks, egg cartons, paper bags, wallpapers, mousepads and pantyhoses.
This prompted me to create a niche inside a niche - about crafts! But not any crafts! No! People are looking for ways to reuse!
There were few questions I asked myself before I started creating these lenses:
- Who will use these crafts the most? --> Teachers, parents!
- When they will use them? --> Mostly around or before holidays!
So, I've created a serial of lenses about reusing ordinary household items for crafts for each holiday!!!
I'm working currently on creating 4 more lenses in same niche: for Christmas, Thanksgiving and with summer and winter crafts.

Adding Keywords From Your Stats
What else you should do with kewords shown on your stats?
There are few other things you should also consider doing with keywords your stats tab with traffic shows - these terms are keywords people used to find your lens:
- add them to your tags (specially if they are repeating frequently)
- consider the ways to incorporate them into your titles, subtitles and content.
When adding these keywords, don't overdo it! You don't want to have same keyword in all your titles and subtitles! It's called keyword stuffing and search engines often drop lenses using this!
What are keywords and why you should care? Here is an explanation:

Lens outside a niche:
Mirror, Mirror Upon The Wall
What Shall I Do With This Lens?!?
This lens was created on an impulse!
Everyone of us has at least one lens like this - created in a moment of inspiration or on impulse! Now, you published it and don't have a slightest idea what to do next!? I've got lenses like that too! ;) And this is one of them!
Lens Mirror, Mirror Upon The Wall was created as a Caption assignment for Giants Summer School. It was created completely on impulse - due to picture I had taken during my trip few years back to Germany... And this picture seamed like a good start I could build a lens on. So I did.
Now, after 3 months, I'm pretty much satisfied with it's traffic and rank... specially considering that I haven't updated this lens from the day it was created... But! This lens has potential to be expanded into another niche! Why do I think that? Look at this 30 day graph:

What do you see here? Here is what I see:
1. This lens has the largest number of hits from search engines (specially Google) - it means it ranks well on certain keywords. This is something I should look into a bit further and my keywords stats (picture bellow) will also be helpful.
2. Low number of referrals is due to few facts:
- I don't have a lens I could link to this one (through featured lens module)
- I haven't spent enough time to look around Squidoo seeking for other lenses on similar subject. If I did, I could lensroll this lens to lenses I've found and maybe some of those lensmasters would do the same for me.
- nor have I look around for any forum where I could participate and point this lens to other forum users
3. There is still a number of search engines which haven't indexed this lens (Bing, etc.).
Now, which keywords are used to get people on this lens? Here is a list:

What do you see here? Here are few things which need improvement that I have noticed:
1. I don't have enough tags! And certainly don't have right tags! Title of the lens itself 'Mirror mirror upon a wall' haven't been on my tag list! >> Urgently repair!
2. I should emphasize more superstition aspect of mirrors. Also, spells and remedies.
3. People are obviously concerned about superstition considering babies and mirrors - a good topic for even narrower niche lens!
4. And that brings me to another place! :) How many lenses are created on Squidoo about different superstitions concerning babies? Could I found a new niche here? Let me look!
...for word superstition I got 75 results............. ONLY?!
...searching for 'baby' inside 'superstition' got 3 results (remotely relevant)
What else I saw in my stats?
First, there is no clickouts from that lens what so ever! I should urgently add or change products I provide here (I have only few mirrors inside Amazon module) - probably to add more products related to superstition... Maybe even Snowhite book! ;) Also, I should add few related links to websites and blogs.
Second, there is no traffic to this lens from within Squidoo! And we all know Squidoo can be a pretty good source of traffic! So I need to find lenses related to this one and lensroll them in hope that other lensmaster would do the same for my lens.
You should check have you used full potentials of dashboard!
