Top Five Living Green Books

The desire to live a healthier, more natural life has become a new priority for a lot of people. We are hearing more and more about the dangers of everyday products and the negative impact they have on our health as well as how our daily actions affect the health of the planet. If we want our children to grow up healthy and the earth to be a safe, beautiful place for them to live, in then we have to do something now. There are so many 'living green guides" out there that it's hard to know which ones are worth reading. While I have read several, many of them dry, boring or condescending, these five are the ones that I found the most helpful, while also being enjoyable to read.

Sleeping Naked is Green

by Vanessa farquharson

living green guide- sleeping naked is greenSleeping Naked Is Green: How an Eco-Cynic Unplugged Her Fridge, Sold Her Car, and Found Love in 366 Days I love love love this book! I have laughed out loud so many times during this book (there were a lot of funny looks in the hospital waiting room where I was trying so hard not to laugh that I had tears running down my face). Vanessa's writing style is both entertaining and inspiring.
This book gives you a whole new outlook on "going green", it makes it seem more like an adventure than a chore. If someone who didn't really seem to believe in it in the first place, and was faced with such disbelief by those around her, can accomplish so much in one year then what are the rest of us waiting for?

The Eco-nomical Baby Guide

by Joy Hatch and Rebecca Kelley

living green guide- eco-nomical baby guideThe Eco-nomical Baby Guide: Down-to-Earth Ways for Parents to Save Money and the Planet is a book that every parent-to-be needs to read before they start preparing for their baby's arrival. I'm adding it to my "as soon as you find out someone is pregnant" gift list, before the baby shower, before people start asking what they need so that the parents-to-be can give an "eco-nomically informed" response if they choose.

I love that this book is so down-to-earth and not at all about preaching what parents should be doing. It's about choice, choosing the degree of "green" you want to be. The authors admit to their own faults when shopping for their babies, making them believeable and very easy to relate to.

I grew up believing that shopping second hand was only what you did when you couldn't afford any better and, even though I do enjoy rummaging in the second hand stores, there are very few people that I will admit it to. Joy and Rebecca make shopping second hand sound like the smart, environmentally responsible, thing to do no matter what you can afford (and, in my opinion, they are absolutely right!)

Joy Hatch and Rebecca Kelley have written a book that was long overdue for mothers(and fathers)-to-be The Eco-nomical Baby Guide: Down-to-Earth Ways for Parents to Save Money and the Planet has comparison charts, cost estimates, product information, resources, how-to's covering everything from cloth diapering, breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, baby food, safety issues and pretty much anything else you could want to know before shopping for your baby.

It's Easy Being Green

by Crissy Trask

living green guideIt's Easy Being Green: A Handbook for Earth-Friendly Living definitely lives up to it's title. It's full of easy tips for living greener as well as a green online shopping listing and other eco-friendly living resources.
It includes a listing of internet organizations to visit where you can help make a difference. It's a great little book, not only for someone who wants to start living a greener life but also for those who have already taken the first steps and are looking for additional information and resources.
It may not be as entertaining as some of the other books I've read but it is well written (not boring) and to the point.
