Bullfight-Picador

From Picasso's famous bullfight series.

Pacasso lived from October 25, 1881 - April 8, 1973, and an awful lot happened during that "-".

While creating all of his artwork, Picasso was married twice and had four children by three women, and he had several mistresses.

Blue Nude

One of Picasso's best selling pieces and one of my personal favorites. This is from his Blue Period (1901-1904), painted c. 1902. Henri Matisse created a painting by the same name in 1907. Matisse was both a lifelong friend and a competitor whose last words were "Pablo, show me some blue, some red."

"Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don't start measuring her limbs." ~Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso: The Lithographs

Like no other medium in which he worked, Picasso's lithography only began to realize its full potential in the decades after 1945. This new volume presents Picasso's entire lithographic oeuvre, consisting of 855 pieces-for the first time in full color throughout the book. Assembled over the course of three decades, this collection is unmatched, impossible to be repeated or recreated in the same way. Its uniqueness lies in the rarity of its test and state printings, and its numerous single printings and unpublished sheets. Pablo Picasso: The Lithographs is the first collection of such work to list every printed sheet as an individual work and thus constitutes the most reliable reference work for the artist's lithographic oeuvre. An interview with printer Henri Deschamps offers an immediate, contemporary account of the process of creating the sheets, and Erich Franz's illuminating introduction to Picasso's lithography sharpens the viewer's eyes to the innovative diversity of this master artist whose importance has still yet to be completely accounted for.

Don Quixote

A famous drawing, and rightfully so. Simple and elegant and beautifully composed.

Picasso's last words, in Frendh, were "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink any more."

Dustin Hoffman told former Beatle Paul McCartney about Picasso's last words. On the spot, McCartney started creating and singing a song around those words and included "Picasso's Last Words" on his 1973 album, Band on the Run.

"Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone." ~Pablo Picasso

Bouquet with Hands

I love the simplicity and the beauty of this print. It's almost child-like, yet it symbolizes giving the gift of love from one person to another.

"It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.
~Pablo Picasso

Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughout his long lifetime. The total number of artworks he produced has been estimated at 50,000, comprising 1,885 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics, roughly 12,000 drawings, many thousands of prints, and numerous tapestries and rugs.

Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail

Here is the fascinating story -- based on true fact -- of a world-famous artist and a little girl who became one of his models. Sylvette first met Picasso in 1954, when she was a girl in the southern French town of Vallauris. At that time, she was the shyest and dreamiest girl among her friends, though today, she is a respected artist in her own right. When Picasso set up his studio in a nearby house, he spotted young Sylvette and was taken immediately by her classical profile and her lovely ponytail. When at last he convinced her to pose for what became the first of more than forty works of art, the two gradually became good friends. Before long, Picasso's portraits of Sylvette became famous around the world.

Author and illustrator, Laurence Anholt, captures the spirit of this warm-hearted story in words and pictures. In the process he also introduces several of Picasso's most famous paintings. Young readers will be intrigued to see how Picasso transformed Sylvette's image into a variety of fantastic and whimsical forms. (Ages 4-7).

The Dream

I wonder what she dreams about? A man? A child? Love? Fame? Perhaps Picasso?

1932. The model is Marie-Therese, one of Picasso lovers. They had a daughter, Maia.

In 2006, Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn was going to sell the original for $139 million, but he accidentally poked his elbow through the canvas the day before! He then paid $90,000 to have it repaired and it was then believed to be worth no more than $85 million. Consequently, Wynn sued Lloyd's of London over the 54 million dollar loss.

"An idea is a point of departure and no more. As soon as you elaborate it, it becomes transformed by thought." ~Pablo Picasso

Not a Picasso

Giclee prints by Kinnally

It isn't a Picasso, but I would like to think he would have enjoyed it away, so I'm tossing it in. This piece is titled "Dancer", and it's a tribute to dancers everywhere.
