- We require oxygen 24/7 and it is smart to think about an ideal automatic breathing pattern for maximum body and brain oxygenation.
When we breathe more than the medical norm (which is 6 L/min; 10-12 breaths/min; 40 mm Hg arterial CO2), it is called hyperventilation. Blood saturation during normal breathing, as any medical textbook says, is about 98-99%. Hence, deep breathing fantasy cannot improve blood oxygenation in any significant degree.
Hundreds of medical studies have proven that hyperventilation reduces oxygen transport due to CO2 losses leading to vasoconstriction, suppressed Bohr effect, and chest breathing. Each effect reduces oxygen delivery to cells. More info about exact effects of deep breathing on the brain cells: CO2-O2 Transport
Bear in mind, that we are talking about automatic breathing patterns or our basal or unconscious breathing. Modern research also suggests that modern normal subjects breathe about 2 times more air than the medical norm (see Hyperventilation
) and this causes problems with low tissue oxygenation (or tissue hypoxia) that promotes chronic diseases.
