During November, pulse oximeter prices appear to have moved up slightly. The holiday and cold season seems to coincide with increases in pulse oximeter prices. Prices usually lower towards the end of these seasons.

Several readers have asked "Why isn't accuracy part of your poll?". Initially Accuracy was listed within the poll options. The results showed that everyone was looking for accuracy with no other options being selected .When the poll was republished the following month, accuracy was left out since it was a given that everyone would want an accurate product. The Octive Tech C1-B is an entry level finger pulse oximeter. With a basic design and an affordable price, the unit is useful for athletes to monitor their oxygen and heart rate levels during altitude sports such as climbing and mountaineering. Although it is not recommended for medical applications if you are interested in avionics or physical activities, the Octive Tech C1-B finger pulse oximeter will fit your basic needs. The oximeter can function in a variety of climates, being able to operate at temperatures between 10C to 40C (50F-104F) and humidity of 35%-80%. The accuracy of this model over all is accurate up to +/-2% for oxygen saturations from 99%-80% and heart rates between 30-255 bpm, which is the range most athletes and avionic enthusiasts would be concerning themselves with since anything below 90% depicts severe hypoxia in the average person. The oximeter will perform spot checking but is not effective in continuous monitoring and will only properly fit adults. No website offered information regarding any FDA approval for the finger pulse oximeter. The C1-B does include a few accessories such as a wrist cord and case to protect the device when nit in use. Octive tech includes a 90 days warranty with the base model and offers a one year extension with clinical guard offering an additional extension up to 2 years. The 300C is a step above Octive Tech's C1-B finger pulse oximeter. Overall this is an excellent unit and one of the most affordable finger pulse oximeters rated by the FDA as medical equipment. Reviews for this unit have been positive. Amazon product reviews rates the unit 4.5 out of 5 stars and customers from clinical guard rate this unit a 5 out of five stars. Like the C1-B, this unit can be used to spot check heart rate and oxygen levels while engaging in physical exercise. People purchasing this unit included respiratory therapists, nurses, and people with respiratory difficulty being treated under a doctor's supervision. The accuracy is +/-2% for readings between 99%-80% and is built to reduce external ambient light from interfering with its accuracy. The LED display is large and easy to read. To conserve power the finger pulse oximeter will turn off in 8 seconds when not in use. Operating on two AA batteries, the 300C is capable of working for up to 30 hours and will warn you when batteries are running low.

The 300PN is specially designed to spot check pediatric oxygen saturation levels for ages 2-13 years. The unit is not just shrunk to fit kid sized fingers, the firmware and chipset are customized to be utilized on a child's anatomy. Pediatrics are not little adults, their needs are much different than ours which is the reasoning to have a finger pulse oximeter specifically designed to meet their needs. The sensors in the 300PN is calibrated for a child's skin which can be as thin as 0.3 inches or 8mm. To accommodate pediatric patients, the opening is tailored specifically for small fingers. The 300D has six different display directions and also a mode to display the pleth waveform as a solid color instead of just a fine line, which makes it easier to read. The 300D has also been tested in altitude conditions for the purposes of aviation and mountain climbing. When reviewing the CMS 50 E, there was a slight learning curve due to all of the available features and the directions written in marginal but understandable English. The main Color display for the CMS 50E was clear and easy to read with contrasting colors; however, the menu display was a little difficult to see due to smaller text. Changing the display angle and brightness was easy. Flash drive memory for the CMS 50 E can store up to 24 hrs. of information. When reviewing the device, it was able to store all information for an 8 hour night. Software included was easy to install and use on a Windows 7 system. Data transfer was simple by both USB cable and wireless. One feature on the computer program allowed the SpO2 and HR to be displayed in real time on the computer display. Reports produced by the CMS 50E displayed all pertinent information such as SpO2 events, averages, and parameters utilized. The alarms were loud enough to wake up by; however, they could not be utilized if data was being recorded which was a drawback. Overall the unit performed well. When compared to other pulse oximeter units that record data, the CMS 50 E was adequate; however, after considering other pulse oximeters with recording capability have a higher average price, the CMS 50E is a good buy for an individual looking for a low cost oximeter with recording capability.
The Nonin Onyx pulse oximeters 9500 v.s 9550
Overall, the Nonin Onyx pulse oximeter product line was found to have the most scientific studies supporting the quality and accuracy of their devices. Although Nonin did not invent pulse oximetery, they were the first company to market self-contained finger pulse oximeters to medical professionals and the general public, in 1995. The first unit produced and still available today, was the Nonin Onyx 9500. Offering a few improvements in the overall design, the Nonin Onyx 9550 was later produced. Both units to date are the only finger pulse oximeters that have passed the U.S Military Airworthiness Certification for use by the military. Upon reviewing the units, both the Onyx 9500 and the Onyx 9550 have similar technology except for the power switch, the onyx 9550 has an automatic shut off which helps conserve battery power giving the 9550 an estimated 21 hours of operation compared to an estimated 18 hours of operation. The enclosed spring on the 9550 vs. the external spring on the 9500 makes it easier to replace batteries. Both displays are simple LED displaying heart rate and SpO2 levels; however, the onyx 9550 has a slightly larger display. Instead of a pleth waveform to help the user determine signal strength, the Onyx series has a simple Red, Yellow, Green light configuration to indicate pulse quality. Overall, the Onyx line is good for individuals expecting heavy clinical use or requiring an extra sturdy finger pulse oximeter.

- I have this oximeter and have been very happy with it. I sleep with it and download the data in the morning. It has helped very much. I can tell my cpap machine does help.
Also noted the change after having cardioversion for my arhythmia. It is very intersting comparing data before and after.

For reviews of the CMS 50 Plus not many were found; however, there was a lengthy discussion of both the CMS 50 D Plus and the CMS 50 E for use with sleep apnea. People who liked replacing batteries seemed to prefer the CMS 50 D Plus.

- I purchased one of these several months ago and have been very pleased with it. It works better then the big bulky Nelcor the dept. has. and i can get readings at times when the other does not. Usually starts off with a sat reading of 97 then wait a min and it settles out on the pts sat. Only one thing I would like to see added is to repeat the last results when it is off the pts. finger. as it shuts off immediately off the pts finger..Love that fact you can change the direction you need ot view it . That is soooo nice.

The CMS 50L is one of the cheapest pulse oximeter available today. If you're looking for a basic oximeter, the CMS50L is for you. The price does reflect the quality though. Since the unit is FDA 510(k) certified, you know the design meets the basic requirements to qualify for approval; however, do not expect much more. If you are using a finger oximeter to monitor a health condition, or to monitor o2 levels, for safety, while participating in activities such as aviation or mountaineering, then you may want to look at another oximeter that has been tested and proven. Ideally this unit is probably best suited for non-critical occasional indoor use with a stable, controlled environment and average ambient lighting. Most sites state the unit goes for $249.99 and offer a pulse oximeter sale price;

The CMS 50 A is built by Contec. As far as Contec Oximeters go, the CMS 50 A is not one of the popular units on the internet. Illedgidly Contec will be coming out with the CMS 50 A4 which appears to be an improvement to the CMS 50 A. No finger oximeter reviews were found for the CMS 50 D. The price range for the CMS 50 D was $65 to $59.95. The best deal for the CMS 50 D was at the Echo store for $59.95, which included a carry case, batteries, and a lanyard. After reviewing multiple websites offering the CMS 50 HHC, it appears Contec has increased the warranty length to 2 years on this unit. The CMS 50 HHC is a finger oximeter built primarily for home health care. Utilizing technology patented by Contec, the CMS 50 HHC uses a dual "see through" sensor to measure SpO2 readings and pulse rate. As a more affordable oximeter, the CMS 50 HHC lacks the accuracy to consistently monitor readings while an individual is in motion due to artifact. No information was available to support any claims of the CMS 50 HHC 's ability to perform adequately at altitude. Caution should be used if you purchase the CMS 50 HHC for Aviation or Mountaineering activities. Like Contec's CMS 50L, the CMS 50 HHC should be considered for indoor, light duty use. Affordability of the CMS 50HHC can also be an appealing factor for individuals on a fixed budget.

The Nonin Onyx pulse oximeter is the first finger pulse oximeter ever produced, receiving FDA clearance in 1995. Since being produced, the 9500 has helped to establish Nonin's dedication to a quality product. The 9500 pulse oximeter is the first in the Onyx series of three. Designed to fit many finger sizes, it can be used for both an adult and a pediatric oximeter. Although the unit itself is small, it has proven itself to be both accurate and sturdy through rigorous testing by both Nonin and third party testers. The Onyx 9500 and 9550 fingertip oximeters from Nonin Medical are the only fingertip oximeters approved for use aboard U.S. military aircraft. To achieve U.S. military airworthiness from both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army, the Onyx 9500 and 9550 had to maintain performance during the military's rigorous testing. Low perfusion and skin pigmentation are two issues that can prevent accurate oximeter readings. The Nonin Onyx pulse oximeters 9500 v.s 9550
Overall, the Nonin Onyx pulse oximeter product line was found to have the most scientific studies supporting the quality and accuracy of their devices. Although Nonin did not invent pulse oximetery, they were the first company to market self-contained finger pulse oximeters to medical professionals and the general public, in 1995. The first unit produced and still available today, was the Nonin Onyx 9500. Offering a few improvements in the overall design, the Nonin Onyx 9550 was later produced. Both units to date are the only finger pulse oximeters that have passed the U.S Military Airworthiness Certification for use by the military. Upon reviewing the units, both the Onyx 9500 and the Onyx 9550 have similar technology except for the power switch, the onyx 9550 has an automatic shut off which helps conserve battery power giving the 9550 an estimated 21 hours of operation compared to an estimated 18 hours of operation. The enclosed spring on the 9550 vs. the external spring on the 9500 makes it easier to replace batteries. Both displays are simple LED displaying heart rate and SpO2 levels; however, the onyx 9550 has a slightly larger display. Instead of a pleth waveform to help the user determine signal strength, the Onyx series has a simple Red, Yellow, Green light configuration to indicate pulse quality. Overall, the Onyx line is good for individuals expecting heavy clinical use or requiring an extra sturdy finger pulse oximeter.

The Med Choice 300C1 pulse oximeter is a simple oximeter that appears to be a very popular product on the internet. Personally, I have owned and used the Med Choice 300C1 pulse oximeter for about 3 years. Overall, the oximeter has performed well. The CMS 50-E has the most options currently offered in finger oximeters. One of the unique features that the CMS 50E has is the capability of data storage and data transfer to a computer. Software is included with the oximeter. For an additional charge, a wireless transmission kit can be purchased; however, the included USB cable works just as well. One additional item recommended to purchase with the oximeter for $2 is a hard shell case to protect the unit from damage. Other features that set the CMS 50 E apart from other oximeters are: Built in alarm for low battery and SpO2 levels beyond set limits, a rechargeable lithium battery, and a color display with pleth waveform. While researching 34 different finger pulse oximeters, 11 manufacturers, and 18 different online stores a few things became apparent.
