Pulse Oximeter Directory

Finger Pulse Oximeter Reviews December 2011- 27 pulse oximeters from $20 to $270 have been reviewed, an image index has been added of all finger pulse oximeters. The index includes Octive Tech, Nonin, Contec, Choice Med, BCI, SPO, Drive, Prince Finger, and several other smaller oximeter brands.
After monitoring finger pulse oximeters and maintaining this webpage for over three years now I have come to the conclusion only a few pulse oximeter features really matter to readers. The pulse oximeter features readers are interested in have been displayed in the form of a poll on this page to help show what features are actually available and what the most sought after feature currently is. Additionally, pulse oximeters that best represent the top features are listed to the right of the poll. Hopefully the poll will help others with their pulse oximeter selection. The index of all fingertip oximeters follows the poll.
During November, pulse oximeter prices appear to have moved up slightly. The holiday and cold season seems to coincide with increases in pulse oximeter prices. Prices usually lower towards the end of these seasons.

The Best Features of Fingertip Oximeters Vote December 2012

Several readers have asked "Why isn't accuracy part of your poll?". Initially Accuracy was listed within the poll options. The results showed that everyone was looking for accuracy with no other options being selected .When the poll was republished the following month, accuracy was left out since it was a given that everyone would want an accurate product. After all, if an oximeter does not give an accurate reading, nothing else really matters, so the poll now reflects what readers are looking for aside from just accuracy.

The Octive Tech C1-B is an entry level finger pulse oximeter. With a basic design and an affordable price, the unit is useful for athletes to monitor their oxygen and heart rate levels during altitude sports such as climbing and mountaineering. Although it is not recommended for medical applications if you are interested in avionics or physical activities, the Octive Tech C1-B finger pulse oximeter will fit your basic needs. The oximeter can function in a variety of climates, being able to operate at temperatures between 10C to 40C (50F-104F) and humidity of 35%-80%. The accuracy of this model over all is accurate up to +/-2% for oxygen saturations from 99%-80% and heart rates between 30-255 bpm, which is the range most athletes and avionic enthusiasts would be concerning themselves with since anything below 90% depicts severe hypoxia in the average person. The oximeter will perform spot checking but is not effective in continuous monitoring and will only properly fit adults. No website offered information regarding any FDA approval for the finger pulse oximeter. The C1-B does include a few accessories such as a wrist cord and case to protect the device when nit in use. Octive tech includes a 90 days warranty with the base model and offers a one year extension with clinical guard offering an additional extension up to 2 years. Overall this unit is a decent choice for the non-medical user wishing to purchase

The 300C is a step above Octive Tech's C1-B finger pulse oximeter. Overall this is an excellent unit and one of the most affordable finger pulse oximeters rated by the FDA as medical equipment. Reviews for this unit have been positive. Amazon product reviews rates the unit 4.5 out of 5 stars and customers from clinical guard rate this unit a 5 out of five stars. Like the C1-B, this unit can be used to spot check heart rate and oxygen levels while engaging in physical exercise. People purchasing this unit included respiratory therapists, nurses, and people with respiratory difficulty being treated under a doctor's supervision. The accuracy is +/-2% for readings between 99%-80% and is built to reduce external ambient light from interfering with its accuracy. The LED display is large and easy to read. To conserve power the finger pulse oximeter will turn off in 8 seconds when not in use. The 300CSE is Octive Tech's heavy duty finger pulse oximeter and is intended to be used by individuals, such as clinical personnel, who need to read oxygen saturation frequently. Keeping the clinical setting in mind, the 300CSE is manufactured utilizing a latex/rubber free process. In a clinical setting this is important since according to the U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) around 10% of the population is allergic to or has sensitivity to latex and rubber.

The 300PN is specially designed to spot check pediatric oxygen saturation levels for ages 2-13 years. The unit is not just shrunk to fit kid sized fingers, the firmware and chipset are customized to be utilized on a child's anatomy. Pediatrics are not little adults, their needs are much different than ours which is the reasoning to have a finger pulse oximeter specifically designed to meet their needs. The sensors in the 300PN is calibrated for a child's skin which can be as thin as 0.3 inches or 8mm. To accommodate pediatric patients, the opening is tailored specifically for small fingers. The size helps to reduce false readings due to excessive movement which can result from a unit sized for adults. When used properly, finger pulse oximeters can detect episodes of oxygen desaturation before signs of hypoxia are apparent. The 300PN also displays heart rate which can also be helpful information. A bright OLED display, which can be seen in six different views, makes the finger pulse oximeter easily viewable in all directions and light conditions. Included is a one year warranty.

The CMS 50 E is the author's choice for the finger oximeter with the most features. Storing up to 24 hours of data, the CMS 50 E can be downloaded to a computer via USB. Computer programming for the CMS 50 E is compatible with windows XP and VISTA. Everything necessary to transfer data to your computer is included with the CMS 50 E. The lithium battery saves battery costs and can be recharged by connecting the CMS 50 E to the computer or wall. Equipped with an auditory and visual alarm, the CMS 50 E will warn you if the unit is incorrectly placed on the finger, if the batteries become low or if the readings begin to fall out of the set range. The overall features of the CMS 50 E make this unit an excellent selection for sleep studies identifying conditions such as sleep apnea. CPAP talk forum has quite an extensive thread on the CMS 50 E. Comments were very positive for the CMS 50 E with one exception, it appears the CMS 50 E will not alarm outside of settings and record simultaneously. A few stores offer the CMS 50 E, with prices ranging from $199 and $135. The best deal for the CMS 50 E was at Clinical Guard. Clinical Guard customer service was found to be exceptional and knowledgeable.

The CMS 50E is the most feature packed of all finger pulse oximeters offering all but one feature available for finger pulse oximeters. Features for the CMS 50E include: Color OLED display, pleth waveform, alarms, data storage and transfer capability, and alarms.
When reviewing the CMS 50 E, there was a slight learning curve due to all of the available features and the directions written in marginal but understandable English. The main Color display for the CMS 50E was clear and easy to read with contrasting colors; however, the menu display was a little difficult to see due to smaller text. Changing the display angle and brightness was easy. Flash drive memory for the CMS 50 E can store up to 24 hrs. of information. When reviewing the device, it was able to store all information for an 8 hour night. Software included was easy to install and use on a Windows 7 system. Data transfer was simple by both USB cable and wireless. One feature on the computer program allowed the SpO2 and HR to be displayed in real time on the computer display. Reports produced by the CMS 50E displayed all pertinent information such as SpO2 events, averages, and parameters utilized. The alarms were loud enough to wake up by; however, they could not be utilized if data was being recorded which was a drawback. Overall the unit performed well. When compared to other pulse oximeter units that record data, the CMS 50 E was adequate; however, after considering other pulse oximeters with recording capability have a higher average price, the CMS 50E is a good buy for an individual looking for a low cost oximeter with recording capability.

The Nonin Onyx pulse oximeters 9500 v.s 9550
Overall, the Nonin Onyx pulse oximeter product line was found to have the most scientific studies supporting the quality and accuracy of their devices. Although Nonin did not invent pulse oximetery, they were the first company to market self-contained finger pulse oximeters to medical professionals and the general public, in 1995. The first unit produced and still available today, was the Nonin Onyx 9500. Offering a few improvements in the overall design, the Nonin Onyx 9550 was later produced. Both units to date are the only finger pulse oximeters that have passed the U.S Military Airworthiness Certification for use by the military. Upon reviewing the units, both the Onyx 9500 and the Onyx 9550 have similar technology except for the power switch, the onyx 9550 has an automatic shut off which helps conserve battery power giving the 9550 an estimated 21 hours of operation compared to an estimated 18 hours of operation. The enclosed spring on the 9550 vs. the external spring on the 9500 makes it easier to replace batteries. Both displays are simple LED displaying heart rate and SpO2 levels; however, the onyx 9550 has a slightly larger display. Instead of a pleth waveform to help the user determine signal strength, the Onyx series has a simple Red, Yellow, Green light configuration to indicate pulse quality. Overall, the Onyx line is good for individuals expecting heavy clinical use or requiring an extra sturdy finger pulse oximeter.

I have this oximeter and have been very happy with it. I sleep with it and download the data in the morning. It has helped very much. I can tell my cpap machine does help.
Also noted the change after having cardioversion for my arhythmia. It is very intersting comparing data before and after.

I purchased one of these several months ago and have been very pleased with it. It works better then the big bulky Nelcor the dept. has. and i can get readings at times when the other does not. Usually starts off with a sat reading of 97 then wait a min and it settles out on the pts sat. Only one thing I would like to see added is to repeat the last results when it is off the pts. finger. as it shuts off immediately off the pts finger..Love that fact you can change the direction you need ot view it . That is soooo nice.

The CMS 50 A is built by Contec. As far as Contec Oximeters go, the CMS 50 A is not one of the popular units on the internet. Illedgidly Contec will be coming out with the CMS 50 A4 which appears to be an improvement to the CMS 50 A. No finger oximeter reviews were found for the CMS 50 D. The price range for the CMS 50 D was $65 to $59.95. The best deal for the CMS 50 D was at the Echo store for $59.95, which included a carry case, batteries, and a lanyard. The Echo Store can be accessed by clicking on the CMS 50 D picture. If you have used the CMS 50 DL, please let others know your opinion.

After reviewing multiple websites offering the CMS 50 HHC, it appears Contec has increased the warranty length to 2 years on this unit. The CMS 50 HHC is a finger oximeter built primarily for home health care. Utilizing technology patented by Contec, the CMS 50 HHC uses a dual "see through" sensor to measure SpO2 readings and pulse rate. As a more affordable oximeter, the CMS 50 HHC lacks the accuracy to consistently monitor readings while an individual is in motion due to artifact. No information was available to support any claims of the CMS 50 HHC 's ability to perform adequately at altitude. Caution should be used if you purchase the CMS 50 HHC for Aviation or Mountaineering activities. Like Contec's CMS 50L, the CMS 50 HHC should be considered for indoor, light duty use. Affordability of the CMS 50HHC can also be an appealing factor for individuals on a fixed budget.

Nonin GO2 Achieve FingerTip Pulse Oximeter SandStone Orange

I have been monitoring the oximeter market for two years now trying to keep up with new oximeters, changes, and price changes. Some things have been interesting to see and others fairly mundane. Today I found something that was actually fairly exciting in the world of oximeters. The price of the Nonin GO2 dropped to the $80 dollar range. The drop in price is exciting for several reasons.
1. Nonin is an American product.
2. Nonin has performed more extensive testing on their finger oximeters than any other company.
3. Nonin was the first to manufacture finger oximeters.
4. Nonin has the only oximeters that are rugged enough to be approved for the US military use.
5. Nonin GO2 has the same technology used in Nonin's hospital and military grade oximeters.
6. Nonin GO2 is warranted by the manufacturer so you don't have to worry if a store no longer is around to warranty your oximeter.
7. In the $80 range, the Nonin GO2 is priced the same as oximeters with less of a reputation and less quality.
8. If you don't think this is fact check out the link on Amazon (click the picture). Check out the oximeters I have listed. Pretty much any brand or model of oximeter is here. Go to Nonin's website and check out the other manufacturers websites. I'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion. The GO2 is the top pick. Prices in July were $99 dollars. Will the price go up or down who knows.

The GO2 LED finger oximeter is one of the more recent units from Nonin and is meant to be a finger oximeter for home use or for sports use. The technology appears to be similar to the GO2 finger oximeter with a few exceptions. First, the display is LED instead of LCD. LED displays, which are similar to most red alarm clock displays, are much brighter than LCD, allowing the display readings to be seen in multiple light conditions. An additional difference the GO2 LED has is its size. Built 2.2 inches wide and designed to rest across multiple fingers, the GO2 LED is wider than most finger oximeters. The GO2 LED's larger size may be easier for people with

The Nonin Onyx pulse oximeter is the first finger pulse oximeter ever produced, receiving FDA clearance in 1995. Since being produced, the 9500 has helped to establish Nonin's dedication to a quality product. The 9500 pulse oximeter is the first in the Onyx series of three. Designed to fit many finger sizes, it can be used for both an adult and a pediatric oximeter. Although the unit itself is small, it has proven itself to be both accurate and sturdy through rigorous testing by both Nonin and third party testers. The Onyx 9500 and 9550 fingertip oximeters from Nonin Medical are the only fingertip oximeters approved for use aboard U.S. military aircraft. To achieve U.S. military airworthiness from both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army, the Onyx 9500 and 9550 had to maintain performance during the military's rigorous testing. Low perfusion and skin pigmentation are two issues that can prevent accurate oximeter readings. The 9500 pulse oximeter has studies verifying its ability to perform and its low perfusion claims are backed by the FDA unlike other brands claims. Although the Nonin Onyx 9500 pulse oximeter is priced higher than most finger pulse oximeters, it is the most affordable of the Onyx oximeter series.

The SPO medical PulseOx 5500 is a prescription only model finger oximeter. One design feature that sets it apart from other finger oximeters is its thimble style finger insert which is different from most other finger oximeter internal or external spring design. The thimble design prevents the problem of damaged or worn out springs you might find on other oximeters. The SPO 5500 oximeter utilizes reflective pulse oximetery (RPO) to determine blood oxygen levels and heart rate. History of finger pulse oximetery

The technology of Finger pulse oximeters has progressed over seventy years. The original concept was discovered in 1930's, by German scientists when they were using, spectrophotometers (instruments that measure different wavelengths and intensities of light) to measure the transmission of light through skin. Later during the 1940's, a British researcher, Millikan utilized two wavelengths of light one green and one red to create a practical ear oxygen meter which is when the term "oximeter" was created. During the 1940's and 1950's, research continued and resulted in the Waters Company developing a system that was used in experimental studies and aviation. In 1964, a surgeon in San Francisco developed an oximeter that was later marketed by Hewlett Packard in the early 1970's. Although the device began to be used in clinical settings, it was heavy (35 lbs), expensive ($10,000), and did not allow for continuous arterial oxygenation level monitoring. The improvements made in the late 1970's resulted in advances such as the use of LED's for producing the light. As time continued, respiratory therapists and anesthesiologists began to see the benefits of pulse oximetery. Companies such as Ohmeda, Nellcor, and Novametrix continued making significant advances producing multiple site probes, reducing size and cost bringing us forward to the finger pulse oximetery devices we have today.

How does a finger pulse oximeter work?

A finger pulse oximeter uses the red color of blood to measure the percent of oxygen that is saturated within an individual's blood. Red blood cells are red because they contain protein chemical called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin contains iron, which is utilized for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide. When blood passes through the lungs, oxygen molecules attach to the hemoglobin making them oxyhemoglobin. Hemoglobin releases oxygen while blood passes through the body's tissue becoming deoxyhemoglobin. The empty hemoglobin molecules then bond with the tissue's carbon dioxide or other waste gases, transporting it away. During this process, the color of blood changes. The finger pulse oximeter detects these changes through two light emitting diodes and two sensors on the opposite side of the finger. One diode sends out red light while the other sends out infrared light. Oxygenated blood absorbs light at 660nm (red light), whereas deoxygenated blood absorbs light preferentially at 940nm (infra-red). The relative absorption of light by oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin is processed by the device and an oxygen saturation level is reported. The body naturally delivers oxygenated blood in arteries and returns deoxygenated blood in veins. To ensure only the oxygenated blood levels are measured, Finger pulse oximeters are programmed to detect pulsetile blood, which only occurs in veins.

Finger Pulse Oximeter Limitations

1.Poor positioning of the finger pulse oximeter.
2.Nail polish can give readings are capable false low readings
3.Any issues which may cause poor tissue perfusion such as hypovoliemia, hypotension, cold extremities, hypothermia, or cardiac arrest.
4.Some Cardiac valvular defects can cause venous pulsation resulting in a finger pulse oximeter reading venous blood and recording low SpO2 levels. Tricuspid regurgitation is one defect.
5.Finger pulse oximeters accuracy decreases as the value decreases. Readings below 70% are not reliable.
6.Cardiac arrhythmias that alter arterial pulsation can disrupt the finger pulse oximeter from recording an accurate reading.

To monitor a patient's blood saturation level of oxygen and readings of pulse rate instead of just checking it occasionally, a handheld pulse oximeter has a programmable limit of alarm that you can adjust in an appropriate level in order to have an audible and a visual warning whenever a patient's vital signs are going beyond and below normal. Different sounds of audible alert for warnings are also available if the reading is not obtained. An example is if the sensor is not connected or if the battery is low.

These are the usual kind of device used for obtaining the pulse oximetry readings. A sensor at the end of a long cable is clipped on the fingertip while on the other end of the cable is connected to the handheld or the unit itself which is more often plugged to a main power source near the bedside of the patient.

The device contains all power supply, display screen and electronics that allow the oximeter to be utilized with various types of a sensor that is compatible. This provides the user a choice of disposable or reusable sensors including the choice of placing the sensor on to the different sites like the hand, finger, foot, toe and the earlobe. If a continuous monitoring is ordered then a soft and flexible probes must be used. For almost three decades, finger pulse oximeter has been used widely in healthcare facilities. It was invented way back 1935. However, it became widespread in 1980's only after measurement system called infrared was developed. This gadget gives an accurate measurement of saturation of oxygen in the blood and even the blood volume change in your blood will be determined. It also gives a reliable measurement of your pulse rate. A finger pulse oximeter reads pulse rate and the pulse strength at the same time. Some advanced models can even provide you a reading if there is a change in your blood volume. There are even models that can measure the oxygen processed upon inhaling air.
Typically, a patient with fluctuating oxygenation should have a regular monitoring with their bodily functions during surgical operations and on hospital treatments. During recovery period, a finger pulse oximeter is also utilized by doctors to ensure that the process of healing is effective. Often times, patients with respiratory or cardiac diseases must wear this gadget after they are discharged from the hospital.
Because of this, this type of pulse oximeter is becoming popular. A finger pulse oximeter is light and compact. A lot of people with chronic illness wear this gadget all the time, anywhere. They can be attached on the finger very lax without piercing the skin. All you have to do is to clip it in your fingertip and after few seconds, constant readings will be displayed on the screen. Recently the price of the CMS 50 E oximeter has been reduced from $125 to $115.01, using the coupon code SQUIDOO5 at Contecmedical systems.com (click image link) saves an additional 5%. It's interesting to see a reduction of price during the flu and holiday season given that overall oximeter prices usually increase at this time. The CMS 50-E has the most options currently offered in finger oximeters. One of the unique features that the CMS 50E has is the capability of data storage and data transfer to a computer. Software is included with the oximeter. For an additional charge, a wireless transmission kit can be purchased; however, the included USB cable works just as well. One additional item recommended to purchase with the oximeter for $2 is a hard shell case to protect the unit from damage. Other features that set the CMS 50 E apart from other oximeters are: Built in alarm for low battery and SpO2 levels beyond set limits, a rechargeable lithium battery, and a color display with pleth waveform.
