Finger Knitting

Learn Finger Knitting with Katsuno Suzuki

Learn Finger Knitting. It is a fun and easy introduction to knitting for beginners of all ages, especially children.

No needles are involved in this technique and it can be easily mastered by young and old alike-Plus it is safe to do on planes.

Finger-knitting is done entirely by hand, using a simple yarn-looping technique! One you learn it you won't know when to stop - my son made a long red 'intestine' - his name for it.

You can finger knit a flower or take a number of separate pieces and sew them together for a coaster. You can even use some of the bulky yarn to make a lovely scarf.

Bulky Wool Yarn Works Best

Although you can use any type of yarn I feel that the bulky wool yarn works best when teaching to children and/or adults with no fiber arts background.

How to Finger Knit a Scarf

by Youtube user Candycane Candace

Candace shows you the finger knitting technique that will enable you to make a scarf. The thicker the yarn the wider-thicker your scarf will be. A thinner yarn will create a thinner scarf. Included in this tutorial is how to cast off when you are completed with your scarf.

If you like this video please be kind and like her video as well as leave a comment. You can also leave a video comment to let her know how your scarf turned out. Follow Candace and her other diy tutorials on her channel.

Knitty.com Issue Summer 2006 Finger Knitting
Finger knitting produces a long, thin strip of stockinette stitch. The resulting thin strip may not seem like much, but think of the possibilities...scarves with single or double strips, three strips braided together, handles, straps, ties, sew many together for a throw blanket, all without needles. This is the ultimate on-the-go, take-it-anywhere, super-simple knitting project.

Great Photo Tutorial.

Kyledesigns - Making a scarf
To make a wider scarf, finger knit two or three sections of equal lengths, and then use a crochet hook or large kid's plastic embroidery needle to stitch together. If you alternate colors you can create a striking striped pattern.

Finger knitting is a great idea for the plane. They frown on knitting needles on the plane. ;-) Thanks for sharing. Bear hugs, Frankster
  • MomwithAHook Aug 31, 2011 @ 5:20 am | delete
They also frown on knitting needles in public offices like court houses - if you need something to do, finger knitting can be a great distraction for kids and adults.
  • Mujjen Aug 24, 2011 @ 10:07 am | delete
THis is fun to do, especially for kids, but I still prefer "real" knitting.
  • MomwithAHook Aug 31, 2011 @ 5:21 am | delete
I agree, knitting on needles is definitely better but for developing hand and eye coordination finger knitting is great for kids. For adults, it can be a nice entry into knitting or even crochet.
  • Carissa Noosum Jul 20, 2011 @ 4:00 pm | delete

Thanks for the info on Finger Knitting, always looking for new and fun things to do with the kids! :))
  • MomwithAHook Jul 19, 2011 @ 3:31 am | delete
I find kids love this craft - using bulky natural yarn helps in the process - makes it a sensory experience and helps with hand-eye coordination.

I never heard about finger knitting before my children and I attended a waldorf inspired playgroup when they were young. Thanks for dropping by.
  • grandmamarilyn Jan 2, 2011 @ 4:44 pm | delete
Wow! I am impressed with the children doing the finger knitting. Wish I could get my grandchildren interested but their interests lie in electronics.
  • MomwithAHook Jan 14, 2011 @ 9:20 pm | delete
It takes time to get kids interested but usually you have to take the 'gizmos' away - maybe when you take them to the park - you can just pull out some yarn and start fingerkintting - you might get them curious enough to want to learn from you.
  • jgelien Nov 10, 2010 @ 12:31 pm | delete
I want to try this. I mean if kids can do it... scratch that. Most things kids can do, I can't. But I really think I could handle this one. Thanks for a cool lens.
  • hlkljgk Sep 26, 2010 @ 5:48 pm | delete

I have seen something similar when you use an empty wooden spool and have four little nails around the hole
  • Tiffany Jan 13, 2010 @ 3:31 pm | delete
How neat! My daughter would love this.
  • rms Jan 9, 2010 @ 8:08 am | delete

  • CherylK Dec 3, 2009 @ 11:53 am | delete
Great lens...I loved the video of Maybelle finger knitting although it's sideways and would be easier to view if it could be rotated. I'm going to practice this and try to teach it to my grandkids!
  • MomwithAHook Mar 9, 2010 @ 3:23 pm | delete
yeah, as I didn't make the video I don't know how I could rotate it..
