Fire Blanket: Learn to Use it the Right Way

Ranked #16,241 in Entertainment, #198,023 overall

A fire blanket works by cutting off the fire's air supply, which is one of the three elements that a fire needs to burn. Fire blankets can extinguish even grease or electrical fires that cannot be put out by water. The concept of fire blanket seems simple enough that even a young kid can understand it. However, it is important to remember that there is a correct way of using this special blanket that you should know about so you will be ready in case of a fire outbreak in your home or office. Below is a practical guide on how to use this fire safety device.

Step 1 %u2013 Protect your hands and arms

Before you use a fire blanket over a fire, make sure you protect your hands by wearing fire resistant gloves or by wrapping them within top edge of the blanket. It is a wise move to store the fire-resistant gloves near the fire blanket so that you do not waste precious time looking for the gloves when there is already a fire. Do not forget to roll up your sleeves so that they do not catch flames. These measures can help greatly in preventing burns on the hands and arms.

Step 2 - Drape the blanket over the fire

Carefully cover the flames with the fire blanket. Make sure that you cover the entire affected area and that no air will be able to come in from behind or beneath the blanket. This way, you can effectively cut off the airflow and extinguish the flames. If the fire is larger than the blanket, do not attempt to put it out anymore. Instead, call the fire brigade immediately. Now, if you are going to use the blanket on a human, have the person lie down on the ground and cover him or her with the blanket. If you are able to cover the burning area completely, the fire should be gone in a matter of minutes. If the fire is not extinguished within minutes, evacuate the premises immediately and contact the fire department.

Step 3 %u2013 Let the fire blanket cool for 30 minutes to an hour before touching it

Do not touch the fire blanket or anything beneath as soon as the fire is out. Allow 30 to 60 minutes of cooling down before you remove the fire blanket. Also, see to it that the fire has been completely extinguished and that there are no flames remaining. Afterwards, shake the fire blanket to remove debris, clean it and then store in its proper place to be used again in the future in case of another fire accident.

Fire blanket, which is made of a special flame-retardant material, is probably the simplest form of firefighting tool. With this, you can extinguish a small incipient fire without having to operate the device and without having to worry if the fire blanket is suitable for the type of fire. Just like other fire safety devices such fire extinguishers, fire extinguisher signs, fire hoses, fire alarms, and smoke detectors, fire blankets are also widely available online.
