How To Escape A Fire In A Public Building

Do you know how to escape a fire in a public building? Would you know what to do or how to get out? Would you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Do you have a fire escape plan when you travel and stay in hotels? If the answer is no, you should read these tips on how to escape a fire in a public building. it could very well save your life one day.

How to Deal with a Fire in a Public Building

If you are in a public building and you spot a fire.....

Activate the nearest fire alarm so you can warn other people who may be at risk.

Call 911

If the fire is small use a fire extinguisher to try to smolder the flames. If you cannot put out the fire within 30 seconds, leave the building.

If the fire is too big to use a fire extinguisher, do not try to put it out. Find the nearest exit and leave the building immediately. If possible, close all the doors behind you as you make your exit.

If you cross a smoke filled area, stay close to the ground where the air is cleaner.

If a fire traps you, go to a room with a window and shut the door. Do not go to a smoke filled room.

If you need to escape through a window, go out the window feet first and lower yourself slowly.

If your clothes are on fire, stop, drop to the ground, and roll. If another person's clothes are on fire, drop him/her to the ground, wrap them in heavy fabric such as a wool blanket, and roll the victim over and over on the ground until the flames are out.

Fire Escape Ladders

A fire ladder is a must if if you live or sleep in a home or building that is more than one story. If your office is in a building above the first floor, it would be a good idea to keep a fire escape ladder in your office too. When I travel I always request a room lower than the 5th floor and I take a portable fire escape ladder with me. It's better to be safe then sorry.

I always check for a fast exit wherever I stay - I tend to memorize stairs and exit doors just in case - it's the first minutes that count...

"Do you know how to escape a building that is on fire? Would you know how to get out? Would you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Do you have a fire escape plan?" These are questions I have never asked myself at any of the many places I have stayed. Thanks for the heads-up.

Great lens! I have never been in a fire and hope that I never am, but I know first hand that if you think about what you would do and have a plan before an emergency happens, it can save your life.
