Fire Bunkers Design

Ranked #67,795 in Home & Garden, #1,116,705 overall

The Fire Bunkers design and quality is crucial to how safe and effective it will be in the event of a bush fire. The intense heat generated by many bushfires creates a dangerous situation that only a properly designed and built fire shelter using all the right fire proof components will guarantee your safety. Fire has an insatiable appetite for oxygen and fuel and will devour all available air from anywhere it can, not only that, smoke also presents an immediate threat of suffocation.

Therefore the Fire Bunkers must be airtight and smoke sealed to prevent any loss of oxygen and any chance of smoke entering. However tempting it may be to try and make something yourself to act as a fire shelter; whatever you do, don't! You are literally risking you and your family's life if you don't have professionally designed shelter with proven Fire safety components.

Fire shelter size - is Bigger Better? Depending on the number of people in your family, you will want to make sure that the Fire shelter you choose offers enough room with plenty of air capacity for all occupants. Fire proof shelters are a large capacity fire bunker with standard the size having internal dimensions of 2.5 m height by 2.4 m width, the extra large size provides much more breathable air than the small shelters and greatly reduces the anxiety that many people experience in closed spaces.

The fire shelter is built from high-density double reinforced concrete, able to withstand a car or truck driving over the top, it is 100 mm thick concrete top and bottom 75 mm sides. It is airtight, has the smoke proof seal and three hour fire rated fire door. Fire Bunkersmust be installed minimum 300 mm underground for supreme the protection. It uses Australian standards compliant parts. The steps are nonslip. The fire shelter has a large capacity for extended air supply, it is able to comfortably support 4 adults for up to 6 hours of breathable air. Also it has the option for roll cage to go over hatch and prevent debris or branches from lying across the exit.

Fire Bunkers

Underground shelters could be the answer to protecting people from fires because of the insulating qualities for the earth. The earth is an excellent dielectric and setting the fire bunker at least 300mm underground offers multiple times the insulation factor and fire rating of the Concrete structure. Most bush fires sustain their maximum radiant heat for less than 30 -40 minutes providing the Fire Bunkers is placed away form heavy growth. This means that the Fire Shelters cannot heat up excessively and you have plenty of air. The earth would act as a natural insulator from the heat of the fire and the bunker would not need to be too deep.

The new AS 3959 - 2009 bushfire code has just been enacted and released. This code covers the design and construction requirements for domestic dwellings being constructed in designated bushfire risk locations. With traditional design and construction it is estimated that it could cost 30% more to build in a bushfire risk location. This may cause significant financial concern for those folk that lost their homes and are now looking to rebuild their lives and homes. The Great News is that there are already several Australian Design and Building companies that have moved to address this important issue, both from a bushfire safety design aspect and as importantly in a cost effective manner that seeks to keep the costs down to or near that of conventional home construction.

Rightfully, the issue of emergency Fire Bunkers has been raised. Good old Aussie innovation has moved straight onto the job! At this time there is a portable Fire Shelter being developed that appears to cover off on both performance and design. This bunker will have up to a "2 hour" fire rating and can include up to 15 minutes oxygen supply for occupants. Looks like this product may be ideal resolve for existing homes and could be incorporated in new builds in bushfire risk areas. The inventors are also looking at bushfire shelters for the likes of horses and valued live stock.
