The Firefighter Family and Brotherhood

A firefighter's family including their wives, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, girlfriends and boyfriends are as much a part of the firefighter brotherhood as the firemen and female firefighters that serve their community. Their families are linked by every fire, emergency and disaster that the fire dept is called to.

A firefighter's family presents their gift of love and sacrifice every fire call, every shift and everytime their firefighter is needed whether it is a false alarm, a structure fire, a motor vehicle crash and even when their fire station is planning a special event for their community.

Most people have no idea how much firefighter families mean to the fire dept and how important they are. Behind every great firefighter and fire dept big and small, career or volunteer, there are relatives who love and care and support and sacrifice for them every single day.

Firefighter Heritage Generation To Generation

Fire Chief and Granddaughter Engine 46-1For alot of firefighter families it's a tradition to fight fires passed down from grandfathers to their sons and for this generation to grandsons and granddaughters. It's not unusual to join a fire dept and realize that alot of the members are brothers, father and son and cousins. It's a proud family tradition to say "My grandfather was Chief back in the day...." and an even prouder heritage for firefighters to share their stories of coming down to the firehouse, playing on the fire trucks and wearing their Dad's bunker gear when they were growing up.

That fire dept pride grows even bigger when those firefighters who grew up in the firehouse and now serve their communities start families of their own and bring their kids down to sit on the fire engine's bumper, help clean the fire station and run around the station with the other firefighter kids.

It's a beautiful thing to see the pride and heritage these families share and pass down.

They are the planners behind the events and celebrations that have to be postponed, changed and moved because their husbands are responding to a fire. They are the cooks that keep dinner warm when a call interrupts yet another family meal. They are the babysitters that wake up at night to comfort their crying child because their spouse isn't there to help because he is putting out a stucture fire in the middle of the night.

A firefighter's wife wakes up from a deep sleep at night when their husbands fire dept pager goes off shattering the quiet with an emergency, a car crash, a false alarm. They are left at home to try and go back to sleep, try and not worry about what dangers their fireman is facing while everyone else is sleeping in the dark of the night.

A Firefighter's Girlfriend

Firefighter's Girlfriend TattooA proud firefighter's girlfriend may be planning some Saturday night date time with their favorite fireman, dreaming of a romantic dinner for two, dancing the night away into the wee hours of the morning and some very cozy alone time.

But surprise! Your firefighter boyfriend may be heading out the door with no warning at all except a tone from his pager, a quick kiss goodbye (if its not a structure fire because if it is, forget the kiss too!) and you are left alone for next hour, or two or maybe the whole rest of the night. Many a girlfriend has hitched a ride home from the couple they were double dating with, in fact many a girlfriend has gone home with the other girlfriend or wife they were out with because both guys were firefighters. I have even seen plenty of girlfriends left in the car at the fire station while their boyfriends donned their bunker gear, hopped on the fire truck and were off to brave the next fire.

You can be sure dating a fireman is always an adventure and one that he is grateful you share with him. When you love a firefighter you also have to love his passion for fighting fires, serving the community and helping out his brother firefighters. Well, OK, you don't have to love it but in order for your relationship to really work out, you sure will have to respect it and have alot of patience. There's an up side to all the times he does respond though. You get to share his pride, you may even get to see him at work if the fire is nearby and you get share milestones like graduation from the fire academy if he hasn't graduated yet, promotions in rank and who knows, you may even get to see him in newspapers or on tv.

No trip to the firehouse is complete without having some fire truck fun. Our rookie pump operator drivers love these trucks. They own the front bumper, clean them, drive them and play together (supervised of course) in the crew area. Sometimes they even let the firefighters join them in the fun. Fire photographer Cindy Rashkin grew up in the firehouse since the age of 10. Both of her parents were firefighters and she found plenty to do at the station with other firefighter kids and junior members at the time. When she was about 16 she stopped at a fire scene where both parents were, got out her camera and started snapping some photos. She managed to capture not only the fire and flames, but also the emotions, passion and moments in time that only a firefighter could understand. The Chief at the time asked her to be the Company Photographer making a young girl not only proud but loyal and determined to do her firefighters proud as well.

Cindy never misses an opportunity to get into the action. She has attended every Live Burn training at the fire academies when we go, she has shown up during Nor'easters, blizzards, rain, heat and wind to show her support of her fire dept and to capture the moments she knows we will love to see after the call.
Being the Fire Company photographer was not enough for Cindy. She wanted to earn her way in East Windsor Fire #2 like everyone else. She makes her minimum two drills a month, shows up for all special events like fund drives and "Majors" truck cleaning assignments. She can tell you what every engine, tower and quint in our dept does and knows how to hook up a hydrant as well as any firefighter in the station. The kids are grown up but their friendships have remained as strong a bond as their love for the fire dept.
This fire photographer has her own gear, helmet, bunker pants jacket and boots because she is right in there. She has been asked to come inside structures after the fire is out to do photos for fire investigation evidence. Police have asked her to get photos of open alcohol containers at motor vehicle scenes. The residents of the homes have asked her if she can get photos for them for insurance after the fires, roof collapses and trees crashed into their homes.
No fire or motor vehicle accident scene is complete without our EMS friends from East Windsor Rescue Squads and Cindy loves to capture the action for them as well and shares her photos with them as well. She has always had strong ethics about not photographing victims and respecting the privacy of patients and their families. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall Cindy is out there with us
Cindy is well known and recognized by our neighboring mutual aid Fire Depts, EMS and police officers. She is welcomed into their towns during any emergency, neighborhood special event and fire scene, at times escorted by the police into the scene. Inside her camera bag she always carrys her fire dept badge, ID, reflective vest or jacket with ID on it, but seldom needs to show it because she is so well known.
Even as a teenager Cindy was out there with us at Fire Prevention and Community Events lending a hand, her smile and lots of enthusiasm. Cindy is pictured here with her cousin Elena on the handline.

Firefighter Family Forever

Mark Sacharoff has been hanging around the firehouse since he was a kid, his dad Marty was Fire Police for the dept years ago. Although Mark and his family don't live nearby anymore he's still firefighter family all these years later and comes by to visit and help us with computers and radio communication. Once your fire family your always fire family.

Mark Sacharoff has been hanging around the firehouse since he was a kid, his dad Marty was Fire Police for the dept years ago. Although Mark and his family don't live nearby anymore he's still firefighter family all these years later and comes by to visit and help us with computers and radio communication. East Windsor Fire #2 firefighter Mike Liebowitz lives half a dozen states away from us now and holds the status of life member but still wears his fire dept t-shirt proudly.
Dick Cunningham is a charter and honorary member of East Windsor Fire #2 and his videos throughout the last 35 years of fires and every type of emergency call, public event and community relations are legend. He is the king of video and his work through the years have captured memories and images that will last for generations in the fire service and beyond. Dick doesn't hang out at the station too much anymore but his videos live on and he will always be firehouse family to us.

Firefighter Rob Wilkins and family shared some magical adventures with us putting out fires, training and community events. They don't live in the neighborhood anymore but the good times and memories shared are always there.
Former Fire Police Mark and Gail Plumser retired to raise their family of four beautiful girls but they remain firehouse family and friends forever in time and never miss an opportunity to visit especially since the Fire Chief and Captain Uncle Barry and Aunt Bonnie. Love You Guys.

I Love My Firefighter Boyfriend

Ladies are proud of their firefighter boyfriends, being a fireman is a noble and respected occupation whether career or volunteer and for their girlfriends there is a pride and respect that goes with the dedication and sacrifice of being a firefighters girl.
