Firefighter Gifts: The Brotherhood Bond

Becoming a firefighter is not just about the Fire Academy Firefighter I program. It's more than just the countless hours of training, demanding physical labor and sleepless nights. It is about the flames, destruction and unknown. And it is about going through it with the guys on your line. The firefighters who hang their accountability tag next to yours, no questions asked except for "Ready?".

This bond is like a secret. Not because we won't tell you, but because we can't. There aren't really words to explain sharing the heat, the zero visibility, the work of the search, facing what is unknown and different every single time. After 14 years in the service, I've given up trying to explain it because none of us who share the bond really can. The bond is one of the truest firefighter gifts that is earned and protected once it is yours.

There is a pride that comes from the badges and patches - and the fire trucks we spend hours taking care of so it can bring us to that time. The Class A uniforms that hang proudly and make us stand tall never feel as much a part of us as our bunker gear and helmets, worn to fit just right like a pair of your favorite jeans and navy blue firefighter t-shirt with your station maltese. Your equipment of choice tucked back in the same pockets after you use them so your hands can find them even if your eyes cannot.

The Brotherhood of firefighting will always be alive and well, because being a firefighter is not just what we do, it is who we are and what we share.

Firefighters are fathers and mothers, grandparents, sons and daughters. We are aunts, uncles and cousins. We are your next door neighbor.

We care for those we love, friends and co-workers and we care for strangers in their time of need.

We are from all different walks of life, rich and poor, middle class. Teachers, plumbers, doctors and lawyers. Students, car mechanics and accountants.

We are firemen and female firefighters and we are proud, dedicated and are always training, for the present and the future.

Firefighters are dedicated, brave, Irish, Italian, Black, Female, Jewish, White......

The Fire Department Melting Pot!

Read any blog or forum on any of the numerous websites online and you will find firefighters networks and groups entitled "Irish Firefighters", Italian Firefighters, Black, Female, Jewish Firefighters and all together, with all of their differences they are still so alike. The brotherhood unites when we put on our t-shirts with fire department maltese, our bunker gear, SCBA and head out to fight the fires, battle the flames and serve our communities. One of the many gifts for firefighters are our differences, it's part of our bond.
