Fireplace Bellows

Fireplace bellows are highly functional for fireplaces with wood and coal burning fires. Whilst these days we have the help of firelighters to get a fire going initially, there are times when we want to reignite dying embers and aid the growth of a fire in its early stages. In order to get more air flow to fan the flames we often get on our hands and knees and use lung power. However, with the help of an attractive bellow we can reduce physical strain on ourselves and instead let this fireplace tool do the hard work for us.

Bellows are not new and have been around for many centuries. Blacksmiths have used variations of the fireplace bellow to make products and antique bellows have been found on nearly all continents. The ancient Greeks, Chinese and Romans used this device in their blast and bloomery furnaces as well as with the combination of water power for other uses. Nowadays, outside the domestic environment, bellows are used in multiple settings from musical instruments to parts in vehicles, elevators, cuckoo clocks and a myriad of industrial applications.

Fireplace bellows for a hearth can be found in a variety of sizes, styles, colors and shapes. All follow the same basic principle however and are extremely beneficial in keeping a fire alive when starting to flag. Some bellows come in beautiful finishes whilst others have intricate carvings such as stars or geometric lines. A number come with leather attachments and decorations which increase their beauty and aesthetic appeal when placed near a hearth or hung to the side or above a fireplace.
