Fireplace Decor: Mantel and Hearth Decorative Ideas

The empty space above the mantel is traditionally decorated with art of some kind, such as a painting or framed print, but other options are possible. As important as choosing what to hang over the mantel is how high to hang it. Generally allow for about twelve inches of space between the bottom of the wall art and the top of the mantel. However, in order to make your arrangement appear cohesive, items placed on the mantel should visually overlap the bottom of the wall art. Therefore, be sure to consider the height of accessories that will be placed on the mantel when hanging any type of wall art above.

In lieu of a painting or framed prints for the space above the mantel consider instead:

A beautiful framed mirror which will not only look beautiful but will reflect light and make the space seem larger and brighter. A round mirror is a nice contrast to the square lines of a fireplace and with decorative adornments that range from cut crystal to sleek metal or simple wood, you are bound to find a mirror that perfectly suits the style of your room.

Metal wall art or wrought iron wall art adds dimension as well as visual impact. You'll find metal and wrought iron wall art in large range of styles and colors that will enhance any style of decor. Choose one large piece or group several smaller pieces. Or make a bold modern statement by choosing a striking abstract metal art that accents your color scheme.

Carved wood wall plaques are another beautiful way to add dimension to the wall space above the mantel and are especially stunning when used in a room with natural wood accents. Carved wood wall plaques with a damask or fleur-de-lis design add a graceful note of gentility to a room.

Balance the visual weight of the mantel with electric or candle wall sconces arranged on the wall at both ends of the centered piece of wall art. For added ambiance, electric sconces should be set up with a dimmer switch, or make it easy on yourself and go with candle wall sconces that do not need wiring and bring the ambiance of candlelight to your room. Scented candles will allow you add fragrance to compliment any season or theme.

Create a mantel arrangement of accessories that accents the style of your living or family room. A mantel clock in the center, flanked by porcelain figurines, framed photos, topiary, metal or brass statuary, and vases are a few items that can be considered. Look at your mantel arrangement as an opportunity to create a collage of items that units other colors, finishes and stylistic themes in the room. Fireplace screens add style to your room with decorative motifs wrought from brass or nickel, as well as painted or matte metal finishes. Wood screens with elaborately painted scenes are a tasteful option during warm weather months to add interest to the firebox.

Don't overlook the hearth. Add interest on the floor beside the fire box with a tall urn, a grouping of pillar candles on dramatic candle stands, or oversize pillars set in tall glass cylinders. Hearth tools and wood bins are traditional additions, even if your fireplace runs on natural gas.
