Home Decorating The Fireplace

You've always looked at your fireplace as a place to gather, get warm, make memories and just relax and forget the day. And that's the way your fireplace should be. Whenever you are near your fireplace you should feel warm, not only physically but also emotionally.

I know that some of my best memories of recent years have been around my fireplace. However, there are things you have to think about when you're investing in your fireplace like the mood, setting and surroundings. If you're looking for a place that will provide lasting memories and the kind of warmth you can hold onto, here are some things you need to know.

Your Decor Versus Your Fireplace

Nowadays you have the option to purchase a gas burning fireplace which will burn more efficiently and with fake logs. However, if you have or want to have a wood burning fireplace, you'll be dependent on wood logs, which crackle and produce soot. If you have white couches and a wood burning fireplace you're going to have a huge surprise waiting for you when you light up your fireplace especially if you forget to close the flue on a windy day. If you're using a wood burning fireplace, it's important to choose furniture that is easy to clean but still works with your fireplace and creates the relaxed atmosphere you want in your home.

The Look And Feel Of The Room Around Your Fireplace

Aside from choosing furniture that is easy to clean-which cannot be stressed enough%u2026my favorite couch was ruined by soot from a wood burning fireplace-you should also choose furniture that is conducive to a relaxing atmosphere. This may include deep blues, browns and other neutral colors. Your furniture collection for the room surrounding your fireplace will most likely include a couch and sofa, an area rug-most likely a deeply colored modern rug, like a blue area rug or brown area rug, or an oriental area rug, and soft lighting that can be used in addition to or without the fireplace.

The Quality Of Your Furniture

One of the mistakes people make when decorating the room around their fireplaces-myself included%u2026I made this mistake once in the worst way-is that they skimp on furniture, area rugs and lighting sources. Never select pleather over leather and certainly don't choose a polycotton blend area rug when you can select an oriental area rug made from thick, hand woven wool pile that will last long, retain color and durability and become an heirloom.

Summary

Remember, decorating the room surrounding your fireplace is important in creating the hearth and home look. If you choose the wrong colors, wrong style or wrong type of fabric-especially the kind that's hard to clean-you're doomed to end up with a room that's more stressful than it is relaxing. The fireplace is a place for memories-don't take so long creating the room that you don't have the time or the willingness to create the memories that go along with it.
